Apple TV App Features Revamped Navigation in tvOS 17.2 Beta

Glad to see an entire screen dedicated to Up Next. But seriously, I can't believe there's still no easy way to manage hundreds of entries added to Up Next other than going through each one of them individually and pressing and holding to remove them or marked them as watched. Still no way to sort.

Up Next needs a multiple select and action capability and a drag to organize, ideally on iPhone/iPad/Mac that would then sync over to your tv.

Dear Apple: move the TV+ and MLS Pass to the Channels section - that's what they are. Make sure the Channels section only shows channels that I am subscribed to. If you do this, there may be hope yet.

Let me hide all kids and all sports related, apps, menus sub, menus, sub menus, please.

Between the bloat, the spamming ads and the abundance of sports. The Apple TV is coming very annoying and I’ve been a user since Apple TV2
So much this!

Imagine if this was configurable per-profile! And if I could be prompted in my phone on startup to select my profile!

Hey, a guy can dream! 😉

With Sports and MLS now receiving their own dedicated spots in the sidebar, my Watch Now feed will finally be free of Leonel Messi!

Seriously doubt it. They won’t stop the fullscreen takeovers on iOS.

I would be ok with this redesign if Apple didn’t try to send me to Hulu every time to watch content I purchased from Apple, even when I just finished watching the last episode through Apple. Always defaults to Hulu for the next episode.

Clearly the priority here was more advertising for TV+. They don’t care about the bugs, they don’t care what users want.

I like the change a lot and as I posted in another thread, does still need some work. But a step in the right direction for sure.

The sidebar channels are mostly the apps you have installed (and some you don't), if it can be integrated. So apps like Netflix & Plex will not show up here. My FiOS app also does not show up here. But also confusing is that mine lists Max AND a "Science Channel" which is really just Discovery reality shows on the Max app. Thank goodness you can hide these! Again, weird because there was also a Discovery channel and I hid that.

And the sidebar channels are replicated on the Watch Now page on the 3rd row as MyTV.

What you can't hide are the MLS Season Pass & Sports Channels. And you can't choose what sports you want to include, which I think is stupid. lol. And yes, Messi is less prominent on the Watch Now page but he is still there when you scroll down. It's like the Sports/TV version of the U2 album.

As for Watch Now, it is still basically the Home Page with almost all the same stuff as before, rearranged a little. A nice addition is "Recently Watched" at the very bottom of Watch Now. Or maybe it's always been there but I never actually scrolled all the way down because it was too annoying to scroll all the way up again. lol. Anyway, I like it. If you are all the way at the bottom, if you hit Menu, it brings you right back to the top.

Also, I can't figure out how to unhide channels you previously hid. I don't see a way in Settings, even if you go into the Apps section.

Yeah exactly. And they are about to purposely make those harder to get to in favor of having ads for TV+ or MLS or whoever is paying for the ad slot on screen at all times.
It's easy enough to get out of Apple TV + app if you are in it momentarily. This new top level GUI change make it less irritating to look at. None of us are inclined for Apple to use their TV + app as a gateway to all other VoD host apps. ;)

I'm not sure how it's any harder as Plex/Netflix/YouTube aren't in the current ATV+ app. You've always had to leave it to get to those other non-integrated apps and same applies to the new one.

Do people think this is to replace the "desktop" where all the standalone apps are laid out? Because it isn't. It's all still there. This new layout is just for ATV+.

No we don’t. But Apple does. And the trend these days in tech is for what the user wants to not matter.

It seems to me this interface IS the Apple TV app, which is why I say now we won’t be able to get out of it.

Ok I did think that. That’s how I read it, and how it looked from the screenshot. It would help if the app and the device weren’t named exactly the same thing.

If that’s not the case, then great. Hopefully they fix the issue of where to source the video (prioritizing what I purchased from Apple rather than streaming services I don’t have when a particular episode / movie is available on both.)

“Revamped” is factual. “Improved” is an opinion. Since this isn’t a review or opinion piece, I see no reason why MR would inject their opinion in this article.
In what world is anything related to Apple marketing factual? Revamped means "no improvements", improved means, well exactly what the word means, they made improvements. Neither one is factual when it comes to marketing.

No, but that’s where Apple is trying to head with it.
I think it way too late for Apple to convince customers that would be a solution. Since tvOS has many third party host programed apps, none of those parties would want to consider being less visible integrated with the Apple TV + app.

I often thought of the channels that Apple allows you to sign up for is just a substiutuion for the lack of adequate content libraries that they never bought or licensed. Yes there is now more Apple TV + content. But all those third party VoD hosts have not been idle whatsoever. They have all beefed up what they offer.

This year we will see the end of Hulu, parts going to Comcast Universal, most going to Disney Star option that could not happen until the Hulu contracts expire in 2024. It will be a tougher years to choose based on costs for consumers. Nothing is assumed. ;)

Sure. But that does appear to be where Apple is taking this. Look at the dev beta. The AppleTV app is clearly intended to replace the current Home Screen. The “channels” and “apps” pages inside the AppleTV app now all look basically the same as the what’s next page. They’re streamlining all the third party content into the app.

Now, does this mean that it’s anything any of us want? No. But it does look like that’s Apple’s end game. Everything rolled into the AppleTV app.

When did MacRumors become part of Apple’s marketing department? This is a news article, not an Apple press release.

Revamped usually means visually or structurally changed. It doesn’t necessarily describe whether those changes are improvements or not.

Register on MacRumors! This sidebar will go away, and you'll see fewer ads.
