Yes you can. Just download the Roku remote app from the App Store. You can also share pics and video to Roku. You can’t even use your ios device to remote control them.

I don’t know if I can take that comment seriously. I got a fire stick to use when traveling, since Apple refuses to make something more portable. The fire tv interface is a dumpster fire, second only to maybe the Hulu app. It’s way too cluttered and takes too long to accomplish anything.Oh nice! I much prefer my Fire Stick 4k to my Apple TV, which I hardly ever use. The interface on the Fire Stick is much better than the Apple TV. I also love its integration with all my Echo devices.
Completely agree with this!Really, that interface is the worst. Can't find anything. Roku UI is even better than Amazon.
Does it have local library support and Airplay or is it just a crippled app meant to sell content like on Roku? The roku apps are so disappointing. You can’t even use your ios device to remote control them.
The app is not compatible with the first- or second-generation Fire TV or Fire TV Stick.
This! All this seems to do is provide an App that lets users of other media devices to watch AppleTV+ content. Just as Netflix/Hulu/etc. have their apps available for multiple devices.
It's not "Bringing Apple TV software" (as in, that used on the Apple TV hardware) over to other hardware platforms.'
They are trying to increase their AppleTV+ subscriber base.
I don't think the Apple TV box is dead. The app isn't the full experience of an Apple TV, not even close. It's just necessary to get Apple TV+ on as many platforms as possible, as well as sell as many iTunes Movies as possible. Apple flipped a switch this year on their walled-garden media ecosystem. I think they realize there's a lot more money to be made allowing their media services to be available everywhere, similar to house Apple Music is on Android. Can't turn down money. And, that's exactly why I think the Apple TV box is dead with these announcements.

It will play all of video library content from Apple too.

And, Amazon is not a choice for me since I want to watch Disney+.
Your Apple ID is probably the most valuable digital user identity account out there - it holds EVERYTHING (your Mac, your iPhone, iCloud, film & music purchases, software purchases) and you are willing to share your password and details to a cheap, horribly made Amazon or Roku or Samsung product that's constantly connected to the Internet with zero or very few security updates. Are you crazy?
What a terrible idea.
Let's see how long before these devices are hacked!
You can’t use the Apple remote app to control the AppleTV app. It sees it but does nothing.I use my iPhone to control my Roku’s all the time, just download the Roku app.
u can use the roku app as remoteDoes it have local library support and Airplay or is it just a crippled app meant to sell content like on Roku? The roku apps are so disappointing. You can’t even use your ios device to remote control them.
nah. just recent ones like 2018Will this app appear on older Samsung TVs? I have a (high end) Samsung and it's about 3 years old.
This is a tragic mistake. Why put your ecosystem on competitors’ inferior products... it’s the same mistake then Apple CEO Skulley made.
Strategically, it makes far more sense to allow top-in-class products like Apple Watch work with an Android phone than to put Apple software on inferior hardware.
Also, Apple is missing the opportunity to seize the markets by not having its own TV at a much higher price point. And utilize AppleTV to capture those who want to use Samsung TVs and etc.Whatever happened to Steve’s epiphany about TVs and the experience?
I don’t understand taking a company that’s all about innovation and forgetting how to innovate. They cannot figure out how to differentiate anything right now. Just riding on Steve, Jon, and Scott’s hard work, Tim needs to go...
He’s a good person, but a terrible CEO for Apple at this point in time. The executive team has let all the talent go so they can reap as much stock as they can using the same old hardware. The software is starting to suck as bad as old Microsoft software - the new Microsoft is doing great.
I want to see some new innovators come out and lead the company to new heights. Make Apple Great Again.
It's pretty damn dreadful on Roku. Netflix and BBC iPlayer are how it should be done. Heck, even NowTV and Amazon Prime work better. Apple TV is sluggish; example, top menu bar, at least a one second lag switching between 'Watch Now', 'TV', 'Movies' etc.
Is it as dreadful on actual Apple TV hardware?
And, that's exactly why I think the Apple TV box is dead with these announcements.
Same here, no login possible.Has anyone been able to successfully login to the app on a Fire stick today? I've tried both the mobile option ("verification failed try again in a few minutes") and entering the password manually, which just results in an endless "logging in" screen. Rebooted Fire, same thing. Was able to go login to a Roku Apple TV app fine just after this, so it seems to be Fire specific (and not a password typo). Hoping I'm not the only one so it'll get fixed faster lol.
Thanks I will give that a go.Agree. The interface seems to lag less if Reduce Motion is turned on in Settings ---> Accessibility.
Which is an incredibly random thing to bring up.Not FairPlay encrypted video.
No I can’t log in either. I get verification failed. What country are you in? I’m in the UK.Same here, no login possible.
it's pretty damn closeI wish they would incorporate an Apple Music app into the Fire TV stick as well. I know I can link my Apple Music subscription to Alexa, but it's not quite the same.
