I have an LG C8 with an ATV4K. I have a Samsung 8000 series with ATV built in. I prefer the Apple TV to the ATV app baked into a TV's OS. It's not even close. If money were no object, I'd buy a second ATV4K to use on the Samsung, as the experience of the ATV4K is vastly superior to using the app on the Samsung. I really hope Apple doesn't decide to stop producing the ATV as a device any time soon.

It’s downloaded Ok on my SM8600PLA, here in the UK

No home sharing option though. Looks as if I’m going to have to stick with Plex. That at least picks up my iTunes library on my server.

I don’t understand why I can’t view the app. I have the sm8200pla.

Exactly! Really can't see the benefit of going Apple for commodity devices these days, when they cost up to 10 times of what you have to pay for the competition:

There was a promo before Christmas where you could get an Echo Dot 3rd gen for less than 10% of what Apple asks for the HomePod - and neither does the HomePod sound 10x better than the Echo Dot nor is Siri 10x better (rather the opposite).

Similar situation with AppleTV: I can see nothing to justify the massively higher asking price for that device, in a world with Chromecasts, FireTV's and others.
To be fair, Apple TV costs more than others because Apple does not share nor sell your viewing habits.

That said, Apple could cut few corners to make cheaper Apple TV. I am guessing a stick-style Apple TV 4K with simplified remote control at $99 would sell a lot better.

Marketwatch out with scathing report on Apple TV+ saying it has less than 10 million subscribers and only 10% of eligible "free trials" are activated. $60 million in revenue vs. billions spent on programming.
Lots of folks either waiting for new hardware (not willing to pay a premium for old tech), or an app that can be used on their TV or other streaming device.
I want to watch what they have, but no way to do it on my older Apple TVs, current TV, XBOX ONE X or my older Roku. Guess I could airplay, but that's not my bag for a streaming service..

Did it automatically download or did you have to do it manually via firmware update or store download?

While I agree, if you are satisfied with webOS, Apple TV app is surprisingly good.

It has few limitations, such as:
  • Cannot use tvOS apps (typically superior to webOS counterpart, although few exceptions do exist, such as YouTube)
  • No Apple Arcade
  • Cannot stream your own library from Mac or PC (Flex is a workaround)
  • No iTunes Extra
  • Although responsive enough, not wickedly fast like Apple TV 4K
But if you are mainly interested in Apple TV 4K for streaming Apple TV+ and iTunes purchases, the app is more than sufficient and IMO preferable to Amazon Fire TV and Roku as it supports Dolby Vision.

And not available for 2017 LG TVs either way don't get those people who say this can end more Apple TV device.

Till LG learns to support their slightly older OLED models with new software, I'll not buy anything new from them. [We have a 77" OLED that's a few years old (OLED77G7), and feel abandoned by LG]
Using the vote by where I spend money once it get'll replaced.

Yep, I bought a 2018 LG days before they announced AirPlay 2 support.... And that it would only come to (yet to be released!) 2019 models. So glad that at least the AppleTV app will be coming to 2018 models - then I'll be able to ditch my AppleTV 4K box - or at least relegate it to the "dumb" TV in the spare room, which currently has a Chromecast as its "smart" add-on.

I'm not sure why anyone would use this vs. a real Apple TV (?) It seems that you would just be letting LG harvest all of your activity to sell to third parties. I have a 65" LG OLED, and I would never let it connect to the internet. I couldn't care less about TV software updates - I want my TV to be "dumb" and just play whatever my Apple TV feeds it.

Apple is so privacy-centric, I guarantee they aren't letting LG harvest any data from within the AppleTV app. Sure, they'll know "user played AppleTV", but that's it.

i wish Apple would work out the supply chain issues that caused them to abandon the tv project. If they can make an absurdly expensive Pro Display, surely they can make a profitable tv panel.

I very much doubt this is a supply chain issue. Countless other brands are able to get a hold of panels and even for inexpensive TVs. Apple is a black hole capable of monopolizing a supply chain. If they wanted panels for a TV, they’d get what they want.

This is something else. I think shipping and storing large TVs is just not worth it in the end for Apple. If they priced these above premium TVs to make it worth their while, General consumers wouldn’t buy them. There isn’t enough of a differentiator.

The big shift that’ll enable an Apple television is when wallpaper type displays that can be hung on a wall become affordable enough for mass consumption. The technology is just about there.

Shame they won't roll out support for 2016+ models that clearly can support AirPlay 2, etc. I've run Homebridge and my 2017 LG OLED's work just as well as my 2019 models. I'm assuming based on LG's position this is a decision by LG and not Apple and Apple would benefit from getting more people on Apple TV+.

I downloaded it on mine last night, I had to do a voice search for it to come up. It wasn’t listed under the regular menu.

Not too long ago I would have agreed. But since it became public that Apple has shared Siri recordings with external partners - without informing the users -, I’m not so sure anymore.

Google once started with the „Don’t be evil!“ mantra, before it realized how much money could be earned with information sharing. Tim Cook is a money guy, so he surely is aware that the already massive margins could be even higher by (re-)using available information.

Perhaps not as all-out as certain competitors, but what if ”we just dip a toe in the waters, where it doesn’t hurt” ... ?!

Do apps like Zwift work with the app? With the Apple TV 4K you can pair Bluetooth sensors (bike, HR etc). I assume this won‘t correct?
