Hi All,

So after much time spent of trying to work out if my Dolby Atmos capable Amp (Yamaha 2060) is receiving Atmos from the Apple TV 4K I've concluded that I think there are no Atmos movies on iTunes in the UK, even though they report to be.

The first image is from Peter Rabbit, according to iTunes its Atmos....as you can see its a PCM signal (as expected) but its only being sent or rather seen as 5.1...

The next is the Dolby Atmos trailer (being Airplayed) from my ipad to the Apple TV), you'll notice the Amp reports Atmos via PCM (the display on the font of the amp says "Dolby Atmos" and the demo appears to sound like Atmos!.. although this time does not report the input channels but does output 5.1.2.

So my question is, am I right or wrong??

I'd say you are right - first movie is not decoded as Atmos, second one is.
So you are saying Atmos can also be AirPlayed? Good to know!
Do you have just iPad or iPad Pro??

PS on tvOS 12 public beta I can actually see already some Atmos movies that really play back correctly as Atmos + PCM.
The one I bought for testing was Mad Max Fury Road, another one worth having is Baby Driver. But as tvOS 12 is not officially released yet, there is no guarantee that everything has been set up properly on the store side either.
Mad Max works, I have tested.
Also, simply download Atmos test clip in MP4 format (Amaze - perfect for testing powerful sounds, Leaf - for subtle sounds) from Dolby, import to iTunes and play from there. Works the same as from iTunes Store.

Yes I was airplay-ing the Atmos test clip from ipad pro and it reported what you see in image 2. I'll try MadMax, assuming you are watching from the UK store?

Unfortunately not. I am watching from Estonian store. But if something is on this back shelf already, it should be everywhere :)
For example, checked A Quiet Place in EE and US stores, it has Atmos in US, but just DD5.1 in EE store.
The bottom line is this - US store has the largest selection, our store is way behind.
Ready Player One has also Atmos in our store, if I am not mistaken.

Is anyone aware of any ATMOS content that actually plays as ATMOS in the UK store?

Thank you, so depending on your amp, you can see the it as Dolby Atmos/PCM (or something similar) - because when I tried it on mine it just came up as the normal 5.1 PCM which I guess it means my amp has the issue?

Seems so. Do you see Atmos enable option in your Audio-Video Settings? This thing should be dependent on EDID your AVR reports to aTV.

yes its enabled, if you recall from the screen shots above you'll see when I receive ATMOS/PCM it reports such.
Sorry, completely overlooked that!
I would definitely not stress too much until official release of tvOS 12 and iTunes Store content with Atmos.
Currently I can only compare US and EE stores and I see much more Atmos-tagged movies in US store.
Indeed, I do not care to buy them all in my store, so I just tried my luck with Mad Max and that one movie works in my store.
Long story short - the content is also still in development stage, I think.

Do you need 4K for atmos. I currently don't have a receiver that supports it, but thinking about getting a newer one and adding some atmos modules.

Definitely not.
Atmos is present also in many recent bluray releases.
Although all UHD releases seem to come exclusively with object-basee audio.

Does anyone know if the Apple TV will support DTS-X as well? Most of my UHD blurays are Atmos, but one of them (Atomic Blonde) uses DTS-X instead - so it will be interesting to see whether this title will just have a 5.1 soundtrack or something else on the Apple store.

It's great to see Mad Max Fury Road being used to test Atmos in here - it's an amazing film with a truly impressive Atmos soundtrack. I have it on 3d bluray (which has Atmos), and it always gets a showing when I purchase a new piece of home theatre kit.

iTunes Store will not carry lossless audio (what DTS:X is, based on DTS-HD MA) anytime soon.
The studio would need to master it in DD+ with Atmos for the store.

Forrest Gump and Rogue Nation do.
Hi, thanks for the message but how do you know they are playing as ATMOS? - what does your amp say about the input given its PCM?

I checked with Ready Player Ones and thats PCM 5.1 coming into my Amp.

My amp says it receiving Dolby Atmos. Many films say they are Atmos but are still outputting 5.1. Man of Steel as an example. Sounds like Ready Player One is too.

Just tested Ready Player One and as you can see all speakers are active.View attachment 777210

Firstly, thank you. So I guess the Yamaha amp isn’t seeing it as Atmos/PCM as it shows PCM 5.1 (for rogue nation from UK store) for me, as per my screenshot above.

What a mess Apple have got themselves into recently. Just let the receiver do the decoding and be done.

I would say it's still very much a work in progress (being a Beta, and all), so it will likely be more functional as the release date approaches.
I can't speak for the UK/Europe, but of the titles on the US store that say they are Atmos, I've noticed that not all of the studios are fully compliant as of yet. I have a number of films that are digital copies, and I've noticed that none of the Sony/Columbia and Fox titles actually play Atmos, despite their Atmos description on the store page. The Warner Brothers titles (such as the mentioned "Mad Max: Fury Road"), and some other studios films are functional. My guess is that it's just a marker for now, and/or Apple is instituting it on a studio-by-studio basis.
Some of my Vudu movies are working with Atmos, as well.

But as far as I can tell, the Atmos logo in the drop-down HUD is displayed based on the actual media file, not the metadata from store.
Because it accurately shows up also on my own clips, that play back in Atmos.
