Anime streaming service Crunchyroll is now available as an Apple TV app channel, making it easier for prospective customers to subscribe without having to open up another app.

Apple TV users in the U.S., Canada, UK, and Australia are now able to subscribe to Crunchyroll through the Apple TV. There's a 7-day free trial available, after which the service is priced at $9.99 per month. The Crunchyroll Apple TV Channel is separate from existing Crunchyroll subscriptions, and an existing account can't be linked to the Apple TV app.

As with all Apple TV Channels content, if you sign up for Crunchyroll with the Apple TV app, you'll be billed through Apple. Crunchyroll says its full catalog of over 50,000 episodes is available through the Crunchyroll Apple TV Channel.

Apple TV Channels have long been an Apple TV app feature that makes subscribing to multiple services more convenient. Channels content can be watched in the Apple TV app without having to open up another app, and access can be shared with up to six members of a Family Sharing group. Channels also offer watch on-demand content and offline downloads.

Some of the available Apple TV Channels include Starz, Paramount+, AMC+, Mubi, Shudder, MGM+, and IFC Films.

As the father of a massive One Piece and Gundam fan, I was thrilled to see this… till I saw it's $10/month. If you pay annually through CR itself, it's $100/year. If you want to spend $20 more a year and not get the 5% off their store (if you are likely to buy from there; they don't always have the best prices), then this deal is for you.

Just buy Sony, they are only worth like 123 billion.

Then let them function in the same way Beats does. Owned by Apple, but mostly independent, while maintaining massive integration across the ecosystem.

Sony is part of so many sectors across Japanese society that I doubt their government would allow a foreign company to purchase it. Now, if Apple just went for Sony Pictures… that might get approval.

Be prepared for a worse experience, if the Crunchyroll subscriptions on Amazon Prime and YouTube are anything to go by.

This has come up a few times, people wanting Apple to buy a media org like Disney, MGM, WB, etc. to save the catalogs/IPs from the current owners.

The problem is they would inherit a lot of headaches, like ancient problematic agreements, media from/with disgraced individuals, IP's with heavy merchandise (and all the headaches involved with that), and so on. That stuff would not be wiped away with an acquisition. Instead, Apple seems confident they can create new hits from scratch, and dip into merchandise/alt media slowly.

I'm sure if they could buy/stream specific IP's, they might nab some, but as I understand it, the owners usually insist on selling collections in order to move the worthless stuff.

In Canada, Amazon Prime has a much better selection of channels than Apple TV. I wish Apple would step it up in this area, it would be much nicer to just use one app for everything. Prime lets you watch live channels as well, which would be a. If improvement for Apple TV.

Same in the US. And same it's a way better experience compared to using apps

Oh, no doubt. I'm not saying it would be a good idea, just that they stand a better chance at a purchase if they didn't try to buy all of Sony.

As you point out, they've had ample opportunity to go down that path many times (MGM, WB, the old circulating rumors they would buy Netflix, or even the really old Disney merger rumors), and they just haven't. I suspect any purchase in that arena would be a studio they've done work with (A24 or the like) that has a catalog Apple specifically wanted to bolster (or live alongside) Apple Studios. But Sony Pictures? No, I can't see that unless Apple wanted to become a large conglomerate (like Sony).

Took the words right out of my mouth. I will not be porting over to an in-Apple subscription; the Crunchyroll AppleTV app is great.

Wake me up when I don’t have to pay for another streaming service. At this rate, cable and/or satellite TV have become more affordable than all necessary subscription services to watch a similar content (sans exclusive titles).

Are you awake? You don’t have to pay for this or any streaming service. You can simply not subscribe and find other things to do than watch movies or shows.

Agreed. I picked up annual Crunchyroll during holiday sale in Nov/Dec for 79.99/year
