Yes, you're right, I'm sure they haven't done their market research and are flying blind.

man you said it all!

It's sad that some people can't hold a mature discussion online by treating other people's opinions with respect. I've noticed that user has attacked various other people on Macrumors and enjoys instigating trouble. Oh well, some people have a chip on their shoulder and others have bowling balls  lol

And I was going to accuse you of being a 1st year psych student but thought that would be silly to point out...

I was a MA student at Columbia, have a CU email addie to prove (and they don't accept part-time students, must be accepted full time).

Why the personal attacks? What is wrong with you that you feel the need to attack and debase others on an online website? I could pass you on to my colleagues, I have the sense you could use some help. Seriously...

I was just thinking, coudldn't you do pretty much all of functions apple tv has to offer with an ipod and the iPod AV Connection Kit that is sold by Apple? (minus the fancy on screen menu)

Thanks for the analysis, you win, I'm heading to therapy right now despondent from an online psychotherapist declaring my insanity to the world.

For f*ck's sake - calm down and have a laugh at it all, you're taking this way too seriously and reading the wrong side of everything.

HDTVs only have two speakers though, so the most that they can do is SIMULATE 5.1.

Don't know what kind or brand HDTV you have but mine has 5 built-in speakers and sub-woofer.And it's a cheap one.
And one could argue on the say..Sony user boards. :

Hey this is a HDTV with 5.1 why doesn't it have 6 speakers?

How am I supposed to take online comments from someone I don't know who has made a point in singling out my comments among dozens of others and called me "stupid" and a "1st year psychology student"??? I find it interesting that you make insulting comments and when called out on them turn around and tell the other person to "calm down". This will be the last time I am addressing you as it seems you are looking for a fight, and the rest of the readers on Macrumors most likely don't want to waste their time with this "pissing contest". Good night sir.

Can't we all just be friends and agree that Apple makes nice computers? Or at least that Steve Jobs wears nice shirts?

Love Apple computers and I am excited about the :apple:TV, just looking to where it will take the home movie industry. It's interesting to read everyone's comments and perspectives, and criticisms are important in product evolution. How else would the iPod have gotten to where it is today without consumer input? I just don't appreciate people strong arming others and dominating topics, it detracts from the community and takes away from the enjoyment.

Oh, and I love all of you lol ;)

To Paraphrase an old spaghetti western...

"There are two kinds of people in this world. Those with Apple TV, and those who dig, you dig...."

Those 'who dig' I guess *may* also be windows users since they obviously enjoy 'making life harder than it needs to be, ( usually to save a dime or two)'

...and that my mac chums is why Apple TV exists so we lucky chaps don't 'have to dig' to get our media streamed !!!

You dig ?

Yes, I agree, though hadn't noticed Steve's shirts before.

BTW, I noticed you're in Kentish Town? Just moved from near there last month - now south of the river!<egads!>

Dude, you need to get over this "internet content rules" thinking. This "little box" as it stands today will NOT replace all those components ROFL. Seriously? No way, no how. Not until it has at LEAST 5.1 surround sound, 1080P and playback of non-Apple content. Sure, it's a cute little thing that may get "ooo's" and "owwww's" at your next little cocktail shin-dig, but for now it's a $299 paper weight.

Erm, it does play non Apple content.

This baby is perfect for bit torrent play back :)

Yes.....all the above and a bit more.
I am quite underwhelmed by this product.
I don't get the point of it
I can't play any of my dvd's or other content.
Only iTunes stuff and my photo album etc........

Or have I missed something?

I think what you are missing is that you already own a DVD player and your 'other content' can be converted for use.

Well, we're being thrown out of our flat in two weeks time, so I'm moving south of the river as well - but literally just south of the river. Into halls of residence right next to Lambeth Palace.

Some might say you're following me.<wry grin> I'm "just south of the river" now too - in Borough.

I can say this I have xbox modded which streams all my movies and all that and then some but since no more daap support for itunes it sucks for streaming my music now but still wonderful for everything else.
So the appeal for me is
!. Itunes music on my home theatre system
2. I can drop my cable and subscribe to only the shows I watch which is way cheaper that way and I dont waste time watching garbage.
3. the UI is great and simple so my wife can use it

Maybe I missed it in the thread, but where is the evidence that :apple: TV isn't 5.1 capable?

QuickTime has a 5.1 format using AAC. Core Audio has A52Codec which allows 5.1 playback of AAC 5.1 on a Mac. And if that Mac is equipped with a 6-channel sound card/device, the discrete analog audio channels can then be routed to inputs on a 6-channel receiver.

But since we can see :apple: TV doesn't have 6 analog audio outs, we know we won't have discrete analog outs to route to a 5.1 receiver, but... on the :apple: TV it would seem possible to stream 5.1 digital/optical outs to a AC-3 (Dolby Digital) receiver *if* Dolby Digital Live (DDL) is used to encode (convert) raw 6-channels of audio into AC-3 5.1 format. According to the Intel, its HDA chipset provides a built-in DDL encoder.

If Apple has not implemented a way to send AC-3 5.1 via the Apple TV's digital audio out I'll be surprised...

Maybe you're joking, but I'm not getting it. What TV do you have that has 5.1?

Unless you're trying to say that your HDTV is connected to a 5.1 system.

I'm late to this thread, and I must admit that I read only the first 4 pages, and the most recent page. I apologize if this has already been brought up.

Has anyone considered that it might not be Apple's choice to limit the video playback formats? They are doing everything they can to get more TV and movie producers to put content on the iTunes store. Would these producers be happy if you could play DIVX or XVID on the ATV?

It's like FairPlay for the music files - Jobs doesn't like it, but if he wants any content on the iTunes store, than he has to deal with it.

With the AV Connection kit, no menu is shown. I've tried. That alone almost makes the AppleTV worth it for me.

Okay, so there are five speakers... how do the rear speakers make sound behind you? They can only bounce the sound off the walls behind you. I've never heard of speakers being BUNDLED WITH a TV like that - but I'm interested if such a thing exists (not that I'd have enough money to buy one.) But if the speakers are built-in to the TV, then the surround sound is simulated, and therefore not true 5.1 anyway, from what I have heard/read/can tell.

Can't we all just be friends and agree that Apple makes nice computers? Or at least that Steve Jobs wears nice shirts?
What! Apple computers suck! They must be the worst systems ever! And those shirts of Steve's - I mean, the Jobsness - they must be the stupidest things I've ever seen! You must be one of those rabid Apple fans I've been warned about! :D

Lol I'm SOLD. Didn't know it would play non-iTunes content.
It does play non-iTunes content? Because I didn't think so. It MAY play content which is not in the specific codecs specified, if iTunes converts it while streaming on the fly, but I think that relatively unlikely.

Exactly. We DON'T KNOW that 5.1 isn't or won't be supported in the AppleTV. I give it 40 to 60 chance that it is in the current AppleTV, and a 90 to 10 chance that if not, it will be upgraded through software to support it in under a year. Unless this AppleTV is really a test product, and they are waiting for the 2nd generation AppleTV...

But then, why bother putting optical out? Really - I'm open to answers here, I'm generally curious, and not exactly an expert on audio/video connections - why would Apple put an optical out on their machine unless it would support an audio format better than the composite output?

does anybody really know how the :apple: tv look video wise is it really good or crappy. Im going to head into the apple store this weekend but if video its crappy then i really see no point of this machine. Plus dont they see HDTV's need high-def videos

It is my first time to see Apple website using flash. it can be found in :apple:tv>>connect your tv. :D
