How is Apple TV+ competition toward Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime or HBO Max? These places offer other content not original to the service. You could say Disney+ may be a competitor, but even that is stretching it.

Apple's video service stands apart as a service strictly for original content. They're not expecting people to drop other services for their own. Why do you think a lot of us are on extended trials? Or it's practically given away with $29.99 per year Apple One?

The service could garner millions more in the future, but it's going to take a very long time before we see it. So far, they offer some unique content and really higher quality series/movies.
Of course they are competitors. They compete for subscribers. It's not like people budget separately for streaming with purely homegrown content and streaming with mixed content.

We already have several streaming services chasing the mass market. If Apple wants to hang back and just create premium content for the upper echelon (which seems to be their philosophy) is great. They'll never make Bridgerton or Squid Game, but others can do that. Who else is going to adapt Foundation? I hope Apple keeps taking risks and "failing" forever.

I've subscribed to Netflix for years but lately the proportion of watchable stuff has been dwindling. Midnight Mass (wowza! lots of future Emmy winners there!) was enough to keep me subscribing for a while longer but unless they have more along those lines or even half as good, I'm going to start to lean in that direction again...

What do you mean Apple is still offering free subscriptions with new purchases???

You mean only for people that have never subscribed before...

Certainly did not get more months free for my latest gen AppleTv 4k purchase. Also nothing after purchasing a new 13 Pro either. Do some research @MacRumors.com

It needs to pump out more content and at a higher pace. I like a lot of what it offers but there’s so little stuff that I forget it exists for weeks at a time.

We don't want Apple TV+ to be another Netflix. NF has enough 3 and a half star content to numb you for years.
Be better. TV quality has nothing to do with stats.
I think Apple's plan is not to be the new Netflix, but the new HBO - which is to say focus on high quality exclusive programming.

So far, it's been a bit hit and miss, because Apple seem too cautious in their approach.

Squid Game is the biggest thing happening right now, and there is no way Apple would have ever picked that up in a million years, because I imagine it would be far too violent and edgy for Apple's tastes.

In other words, Apple's problem is putting ideology before creativity. Let amazing creators create, stop trying to limit and filter them.

For instance, it's hard to see Quentin Tarantino ever creating something for Apple.

Ted Lasso is amazing, but if you want edgy content, TV+ ain't for you.

This needs to change if Apple want to get where they want to go.

Considering it's a fraction of the price of Netflix, and almost all the content is top notch, I don't care about how many subscribers they have. Netflix has some great content too, but is mostly bloated with trash.

Apple has never been about driving volume, but rather quality. Sometimes less is more.
Right, but quality is very subjective especially when they seem to be on a political/social mission.

From an investor's point of view, volume speaks for itself.

I wish they could purchase Criterion streaming rights. Considering how appleTV+ wants to be high quality, it would fit the model and it would provide a unique back catalog.
But The Criterion Collections are not content creators in this sense, they are purely disctributors (much like Janus Films). Their own content is basically just a few BR extras (interviews). Rather why not go to the content owners?

Your post is basically a wish to save on the Criterion Channel subscription. :)

What political/social mission? All highly rated dramas have some sort of message.

Apple needs a wider back catalogue of golden oldies and sport. Difficult to do on a world wide market but nec=ver saw the need for it past one film for my personal use.

Well, basically yes 😛 I think it would be a good pairing. At this point I think it would be easier to go through Criterion Channel because it would avoid renegotiating all the distribution contracts. The backcatalog (which is quite impressive) is ready and available.

Apple has reportedly been telling studio executives that it is aiming to do more than 10 to 12 original movies per year for ‌Apple TV‌+.

So, in 10 years Apple TV+ will have around 100 movies?
Wow. Just wow.

Apple will really need to step up if they want Apple TV+ to succeed.

(Might re-subscribe for a single month at some point to watch Ted Lasso season 2, though. Wonderful show!)

Hardly surprising as their content is nowhere near as good as their rivals at this point. They’ve got 5 years to turn it into Netflix lol.
One thing that occurs to me, thinking about this discussion regarding Apple's lack of success with Apple TV+, or rather what some feel is a lack of success - I think back to the early days of Apple, when the Mac was not much more than a fringe player in the computer industry, before iPod or iPhone or any of the other great products we're enjoying now even existed.

It doesn't mean that Apple will reach the same level of success with Apple TV+, but it also suggests that taking a much longer view is probably wise. And Apple can easily afford to take a very long view indeed.

HBO has lots of non HBO content. No real comparison.
The Apple TV app shows others’ content as well, however moreso referring to their original content. It’s more compatible than others. They are both more premium content than the others. Disney is just a household name so that will succeed regardless, and kind of bleeds into other categories also.

HBO Max would be in the Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ category. They offer shows and movies that predate or are not exclusive to the service.
My apologies, however I wasn’t really talking about categories. HBO Max, although sure offers others, is primarily focused on premium high quality content

See is far more violent
True but violence is ultimately contextual.
See is science fiction based in an alternate universe.
SG is a commentary on society, real life.
It’s why it’s more ok to have violence in cartoons.
