I don't mind paying for cable. But I do want all my channels to be something that streams over the air. I refuse to run cable wiring through my house when I have fast wifi.

still waiting for the amazon video app for the aTV3, will probably happen in the next few decades!

So tired of this "cable provider authentication" crap...

If they want cord cutting to take off they really need to end that requirement. I couldn't even watch the baseball game Sunday night because FS1 wanted a cable provider login.

Who exactly is the "they" you are talking about? Because neither networks, studios or pay tv providers want cord cutting.

Except in the UK, country of 60 million people, a company called Sky stops us from getting anything decent on Apple TV. There's no HBO, Cbs etc. Netflix is the best it has to offer, except for streaming from iTunes.
(Very annoyed).

This is a nice addition, but long over due.

Authenticating the channels could be changed in some way to make it easier and quicker. It is also annoying that the channel has to be re-authenticated so often.

A lot of people support it, but I do not like the idea of a one log-in to authenticate all the channels unless it was optional.

I think they should just have you sign in once and have the os apply it towards all channels that it can. It's beyond annoying and counter intuitive to constantly have to click on a new channel, log onto a web site, full out a user id and quick code, to then go into that one channel. Why not just one and done.

Like maybe, open Apple TV box. Log into iTunes with Apple ID. Sign into cable provider ID. Have the os apply that info towards all channels that will accept it. And there you go. Done.

Ok Apple, if you're reading... I'll sign with you guys for 120k a year for more common sense things i can iron out for you.

You can stream Sky programmes through the Now TV app on the Apple TV.

It's a bit pointless to have that on your Apple TV when it sits next to your cable box, isn't it?

Nope. The more channels the Apple TV gets is the more it will finally be able to replace a cable box in your home. Think about it... How many cable boxes do you have and count how much per month you are paying your cable company for them. Now reduce that number by one and see how much you save over a year!

Makes sense now?

The studios, networks and tv providers want it that way. Apple has no say.

It will once one can get live shows and sports on those channels....

Has anyone read an explanation as to why this late 2015 AT does not support 4k? The "there is no content" explanation is less and less accurate everyday.

-4K is still in its infancy.
-It is still fragmented, split up between TV manufacturers and the content providers they partner with.
-OTA 4K broadcasts are minuscule at best.
-it will take another 10 years before 50% of US households have a 4K tv.
-By then the 4K standard will undoubtedly change making buying a 4K tv today obsolete

Apple is smart to wait.

I still don't understand why we have to sign in with a cable login or subscribe (like CBS) for these channels that are already free. I suppose the on-demand part is a bonus, but if it's already free why do we have to do it?

I cut the cord years ago, but unfortunately in the two places I've lived (one apartment in Austin, one in LA), I just can't get OTA channels to work. Maybe it's the antennas I'm buying, but no channel comes in clean, so I was hoping that free streaming channels would one day be available.

I know this is off-topic, but does anyone have advice on getting OTA to work? Do I need an antenna that costs in the $100 range?

Any content going to your tv via a cable is considered retransmission. And as such would incur a fee. Authenticating via your tv provider negates that fee.

What exactly is the point if you need a cable account to watch? Wouldn't people just watch it on cable? I really hope that Apple is still working on agreements with them.
It eliminates the need to rent extra boxes from your cable provider. Say you have a TV in your living room, bedroom, and 2 kids rooms that would be 3 extra boxes at a minimum of $5.99 each a month.

Yay.... More channels I cannot watch without cable subscription or i need subscription for .. )

People who can't get access or don't want to jump through hoops that HBO emails get sent to user outside U.S,, people would just fall back to pirateing anyway...

Simple.

Cable companies are one of the worst forms of service providers, IMHO. It's 2015. Time to embrace the notion that most are cutting the cord and are sick of paying for 200 channels they don't watch in order to get 6 they do watch.

We need disruption in this industry. A true a la carte service would be a game changer.

"..Most are cutting the cord..." Stats say otherwise.
"...A true a la carte service would be a game changer." A la carte already exists. Open iTunes and purchase just the content you want.
"...sick of paying for 200 channels they don't watch in order to get 6 they do watch..." The commercials on those channels you "don't watch" goes to pay for the channels you do watch.

I agree completely. There has to be a better way. We just keep mentioning a la carte as if it's some sort of panacea. The idea of a la carte in it's present state is untenable. I can honestly say I don't know what the answer is, but a la carte ain't it.

I think the cable companies are realizing what the cell phone companies already figured out - the money's in the data. My cable internet speed has gone from 25 down to about 170 down in a few years. A lot of the data usage is uncapped, so I can see them start to cap and sell data packages (of course the amounts would have to be pretty high to start with). They are already locked into contracts with the big networks which force them to carry all their secondary channels as well.

Though we just switched to Comcast's X1 and I am really digging the interface. I just wish the secondary boxes could do more, like voice search and live rewind/fast forward.

I agree, there is no point in using these apps if you have to have a cable subscription other than if you have an AppleTV hooked up to a TV some place in your house that doesn't also have a cable/SAT box hooked up to it. This isn't "cord cutting" and being able to drop your cable/SAT provider. Psshhhh.
This is a legit use case for this. Most cable companies charge a rental fee for their boxes. You could just rent one (or even zero) boxes and still save yourself money overall.
