I would be really happy to have a router/modem built in to the Apple TV. If Apple were allow 4k steaming from iTunes, I feel this would be the best solution to handle the bandwidth required.

Are you saying 802.11ac wireless or a Gigabit Ethernet wired connection to a Time Capsule isn't enough?

Maybe they'll pull an X-Box One and have overlays over programs that allow you to buy stuff from the iTunes store.

The ATV already has both Ethernet and Wifi so I don't think it would need to increase the size or cost for this feature. Not saying they would not charge more anyway but I do not think it would require it based on the hardware requirements.

I likewise dont understand the resistance. The major difference between the two current boxes is color. Paint one like the other and its hard to tell them apart. Just need the extra ethernet on one and the A chip of the other. The only technical disadvantage is having one box doing more, but an A7 should be able to keep up.

Assuming the software is worked out to avoid confusion etc, the only way this isnt a win is if apple chooses to boost the price. But even 150 is a good price for better ATV functions alone. But at 99, its a no brainer. Buy one box and use it either way or both. Or change back and forth as needed. Genious.

This is the dumbest idea ever.

Can you elaborate on why?

As I see it's pretty cunning. Every app that offers on demand playback of past episodes is riddled with ads. And even if you record a show on your DVR you still have to actively FF through the ads. So if Apple could accomplish this they no only corner the streaming box market with that feature they also could potentially give cable subscribers a reason to drop DVR service ($10-15 a month) because they could just watch on demand w/ no ads via the ATV. Of course devil's in the details and I don't understand how Apple profits long term. But on the face of it, I don't see how it's the dumbest idea ever... I mean like dumber than Microsoft's BOB software.

So I'd love to hear your reasoning.

The Router/TV combo sounds like a great idea.......Until I remember my Demarc/Modem/Router is upstairs, nowhere near my TV/AppleTV. I might be confused on how this is supposedly a great idea.

Luckily I have a Gig wired connection to my current ATV, I figure that should be good enough for quite some time.

Here's the new wallpaper on the iPad.

This will never happen, but remove the restriction of making me put all my videos inside itunes and allow AppleTV to catalog samba or NFS shares that are visible on my network and you have a million+ more instant sales. Make it a true media player box instead of this locked down thing. Hell keep it locked down and tie it to the app store, but let me use my NAS and its storage on my network without having to have itunes running if I don't want to.

Same here , and my modem is a voice modem also so this would not work for me and I am guessing very many people

Not at all, I believe a Time Capsule is and so is 802.11ac. But wireless can be tricky for people who live in apartment complexes. I'm just saying for 4k streaming, less cables and interference could be the best solution.

I'd be really po'ed if I bought an aTV for my girlfriend for Valentines Day and in March, they came out with an updated version. I think pushing them for VD puts a revision of the box out to at least...June/July. Just sayin'.

Just restore the ability to play iTunes Extras for movies like the original Apple TV still has...

this. it's absurd that it can't, really.... why did i buy a movie via itunes if i can access the extra tracks n stuff except on a desktop mac?

----------

I have a Linksys router that is plenty sufficient, I assume I wont be able to bridge this unless I have AE, AExpress or ACapsule which is useless and drives the price up.

why would you assume anything about a non-product, rumor?

What? The bandwidth starts with your service provider, and certainly for the seeable future, it's unlikely that good quality 4K streaming will make it to many homes.

I've looked at the AppleTV on and off for a few years. I'm not very happy with my current cable subscription and have been thinking of making a change.

Start looking at OTA (Over-the-air) offerings in your area. I'm assuming you're in the US. There are FREE OTA channels, and many of them in 1080i. Yes, they are free with no catch. The only reason most people don't know about this is there are no marketing/advertising campaigns for this. So to start, you get your ABC/NBC/FOX/CBS/PBS, and these should be in HD and FREE.

This only costs between $20-$200 depending on the gear you need. (Indoor antenna, outdoor antenna). It might be quite a pain to install, but once you have it, you have NO monthly payments. Zero.

Most guys have problems with loosing their sport channels and there are no convenient ways around that. But if you can live without sports, then this might be worth a try.

In terms of Apple TV, just wait of couple and maybe Apple offers something nice.....hopefully......:apple::apple::apple:

millions more sales? no. do you realize you arent like most mass market consumers? those people dont know what NFS or NAS is.

those are worth their weight in gold, send them to me :). check ebay, they go for way more than a brand new 3rd gen

2nd gen is the best :p

Wow, you're not kidding. Over $200 for one that's not even jailbroken yet. Maybe I should sell mine since I'm not interesting in jailbreaking it… When they come out with the next one I probably will.

I don't need another router. Seems as though it would be overkill, not to mention I'd be paying for something I (already have/don't need.) Hopefully they'll have two options, as an all-in-one would be great for those in the market for a router as well.

I'm looking forward to the new Apple TV, and to the prospect that Apple is no longer treating it as a hobby.

Ever heard of HDMI?

It's the port where you can plug in auxiliary devices from a BROAD RANGE of manufacturers. Or do you have an Apple HDMI port? (as in, apple-only hdmi-port)

Just open it up

The only thing ATV needs is to be opened up and have an AppStore. The rest should take care of itself. Beefier hardware would of course be appreciated in that case. But this thing is never going to take on a PS4 for games, so it is a matter of degree and cost.

Not kidding indeed. Just goes to show you how much Apple has to gain from opening it up.

I think having an internal router is a good thing depending on the user and how much it adds to the cost. I live in a small house, 960sqft plus basement, and use a wired router to get the internet, a 1T Time Capsule to create wi-fi and an old airport extreme in the living room to extend that wifi so my av components (receiver for updates/blu-ray for access to Amazon Prime, etc.) can have a wired ethernet connection. Just bought a 3T Time Capsule so both those things will move down a spot and the airport extreme will move to the basement to extend the signal down there when I eventually finish the basement. Even small living spaces can benefit from more routers.

Amen to that.

I don't understand how a touch device can be used as a successful game controller. You can't look at it, so without any hardware buttons to use, you're limited to swipe, tilt and tap gestures. Not that there aren't very good games tat just use those mechanics, but I don't see how we can possibly get a wide variety of games.
