I'd be really po'ed if I bought an aTV for my girlfriend for Valentines Day and in March, they came out with an updated version. I think pushing them for VD puts a revision of the box out to at least...June/July. Just sayin'.

i just bought mine! receiving on saturday :D ha ha ha

Cable...

Somehow I can't see an AppleTV interface coming for my Google Fiber "cable" TV setup any time soon...

I would be really happy to have a router/modem built in to the Apple TV. If Apple were allow 4k steaming from iTunes, I feel this would be the best solution to handle the bandwidth required.

Will the internet backbone of the US even support a high number of folks streaming at 4K?

Apple have a good product with ATV. However, their focus has been almost exclusively based on the U.S. market. As a result the European buyer of an Apple TV gets a pretty poor product feature wise by comparison. I used to use my ATV quite a bit at one time, now it rarely gets switched on. As an example, there are none of the UK on demand catch up TV services, yet you can get these on a host of other products e.g. Xbox, Play Station, PVR's DVDR's Roku etc. etc.

I believe it's as similar story on mainland Europe. MS often get criticised for being late to the party. Apple were however at this party but then decided to leave early, opening the door to everyone else.

A router? What if you already have a Time Capsule?

Right! or a cable modem, plus Time Capsule, plus Airport Extreme, plus Airport Express? The Airport Express sits right next to my Apple TV and Flat-screen to feed my stereo system. I don't need the hassel of a router.

That would be outstanding if it can control my cable box. Count me in!

Also have say a button for blu-ray, boom my blu-ray player lights up and disk tray ejects.

Ok, now I am dreaming. :D

I agree with others and think that making giving the AppleTV extended network functionality helps a lot with latency. Now your iPad, iPod, iPhone, etc. connect directly to the Apple TV and skip any router issues. No additional hardware should be needed as others mention as the Apple TV is basically a headless iPhone which already can act as a hotspot.

I don't see Apple combining ATV with Airport - those will remain separate devices, as they serve different purposes. Most people use Apple TVs as WiFi clients - this offers the flexibility to place Apple TV(s) anywhere in the house. Making ATV into Airport hotspot would imply that the new device needs to connect to a wired network. Apple iOS devices are all about wireless connectivity. AirPort networking products will remain a separate accessory category.

They should add storage though and give the option to directly access DNLA (is that the right order of letters?) servers so those with movie libraries can access them. Right now I have a rooted ATV 2 running XBMC

Keep dreaming. Apple will never support DLNA natively (and frankly DLNA is junk compared to iTunes Home Networking). Your best hope might be a 3rd party app, if they ever support App Store for ATV.

I always found it weird that they grouped Apple TV with the other iPods at the top of the page under the iPod section on their main site. I mean... it's not really an iPod. Also, the fact that you wouldn't find it at the top of the "Shop iPod" section in the online store just confuses things even more.

This is the dumbest idea ever.

Quite the contrary when you realize how much revenue tv providers and content owners make off commercials...... Even when you are not viewing them!!!

And those commercials pay most of the costs of the content you watch. Way much more than your subscription does!

You think any of them is going to give up that cash cow without some sort of compensation?

I love my Apple TV and it has become my favorite pastime. I own well over 100 movies and have every season of The Office and Parks and Rec. I have also enjoyed some of the new streaming services such as PBS, Yahoo, and Crackle.

I use it every single day and its so good, I own 2 of them.

How about making iTunes Extra and Rentals Work you Morons!

I find it laughable that iTunes Extra doesn't work with Apple TV and that if you rent a movie on your Computer the damn thing WON'T work on the Apple TV. What a freaking joke. Also how about adding UltraViolet????

When the AppleTV gets a special section in the apple.com main page then maybe this will be really something.
I guess it's mainly to test the iPod leaving the lineup.
Looking forward the newer version, hopefully it will bring better services and functionality and give another punch to the nasty traditional subscription based TV service providers.

A router? What if you already have a Time Capsule?

What would be the point of including a router in a Apple TV?

Streaming quality depends more on peering agreements (Netflix stuttering, etc.)

Then it could be used as an extender. Unless your router is already next to your Apple TV :D

I don't understand how a touch device can be used as a successful game controller. You can't look at it, so without any hardware buttons to use, you're limited to swipe, tilt and tap gestures. Not that there aren't very good games tat just use those mechanics, but I don't see how we can possibly get a wide variety of games.

It isn't, iPhones and iPads as controllers are next to useless. Especially when you aren't even looking at them lol. If they want gaming to be decent at all they need to make their own designed by Apple bluetooth controller. Simple as that. Third party controllers will never drive gaming on iPhones or an Apple TV with gaming capabilities. Those worthless MFi controllers for the iPhone are already dropping $30 off the price because they aren't selling to anyone. No one wants worthless controllers which cost far more than the best designed controllers in the world (PS4 especially, and Xbox one). Here are the basic problems: iPhones still aren't quite powerful enough for really good games, (however I beat Tomb Raider on it and it is by far the best game available for them, and it is $0.99....), the iPhone doesn't have an Apple designed controller and thus AAA developers still aren't touching it much, and no one is going to buy a controller if developers don't add MFi controller support, and AAA games which need a controller aren't made. It's really just a mess.

Answer: Nobody would put that thing anywere near the living room. The latest Time Capsule design is really awfull.

The Time Capsule and Airport Extreme designs are amazing. #1 reason: they don't have 4,000 flickering, blinking lights like a Christmas tree. Yes those lights are so useful to 99.9% of the users of routers. LOL

I would love an Apple TV 4 that worked the way my Logitech Google TV worked, HDMI of your Receiver into the Apple TV and HDMI out of the Apple TV to your TV. That way its "always on" hit the "Apple TV" button (on hopefully a nice remote/keyboard they supply) and up come all your movies. Hit the "Live TV" button and up comes your DVR/List/Guide what have you. Hit "Safari" and you browse the web. Type in what you are looking for and it finds it on your DirecTV/Apple TV/Netflix/Web/Amazon/Hulu and play it! BAM, done! And in the slick way only Apple can make work seamlessly.

The logitech unit worked great in sorta this way, it even had Chrome to pop open a web browser, unfortunately my unit locked up all the time and I could never find an easy way to stream my NAS video's to it... perhaps that has all changed but I sold it last year... (I may look into this again with the Vizio Co-Star... looks Cool, so does the Sony one with that slick trackpad.. ugh may have to research what is best right now)

Anyway... I would absolutely love if Apple did this, that with a 802.11ac router built in and Airplay working in a way so I can use my NAS-stored videos along with my purchased/rented iTunes content. (currently using AirVideo HD to push everything to all my Apple TV's) and that is streaming and integration so easy my mom can use it!

Just restore the ability to play iTunes Extras for movies like the original Apple TV still has...

Yep. And make them better. Alt language, subtitles, directors tracks on the movies. All the behind the scenes stuff. I don't care as much about the menu thing if it was done like TV shows do. But we should get the same stuff that would come on a box set. And if they do a season and then later a box set we should be able buy up. Don't punish folks that buy during the season. Movies or TV shows. Or make them separate items where it makes sense. There were all those 'doctor who confidential' etc stuff. They were released as their own mini show. Do that with the features stuff (at the same quality as the movie) where it makes sense. Like the Harry Potter 'creating' and the ton of LOTR stuff

As for this rumor I don't buy the cable box thing. I think they will push for apps so you don't need a box. And I'm cool with that. Just give me a store to download what I want. Especially if it stays at 8 or 16 GB.

I have three ATV in the house (technically 4 inc the very first version) loved the concept from day one. They get used every day and if you have bought into the Apple Eco system it's a must.

I do think its prime time now to release an App Store as content here in the uk is slim to say the least. I primarily use it for Air Play but do have quite a lot of iTunes content as well.

The interface needs a re-think once more content is available and the supplied remote is awful to use. Luckily we have plenty of iOS devices to use as remotes.

Strange thing is I find air play from my MacBook Pro very laggy.

Love the idea of combining AE and ATV as I have two of them as well and makes a lot of sense. Really looking forward to the next version to purchase.

:)

Agree but I use catchup tv via airplay on my iOS devices and works a treat.:)

Copyright really mucks that up. But I agree that they need to work on global offerings. In iTunes, on the Apple TV etc
I don't think copyright has anything to do with it. The catch-up services of the UK's three major terrestrial broadcasters all have apps on the PS3, Xbox, and on other set-top devices. The problem is Apple.

I find it laughable that iTunes Extra doesn't work with Apple TV and that if you rent a movie on your Computer the damn thing WON'T work on the Apple TV. What a freaking joke. Also how about adding UltraViolet????
I've rented dozens of films on my Mac which I've then watched on my Apple TV. When the ATV2 first came out I remember having problems, but it may have been the fault of a dodgy router. Either way, for me at least these issues are a thing of the distant past. When you say it doesn't work, what exactly goes wrong?
