What did I miss? Which show is even slightly edgy, or even worth watching so far?

Looking at the roadmap there doesn't seem to be any show set in any type of gritty scenarios whatsoever.

To say that the demographic they are aiming for is middle of the road would be generous.

I am a ATV+ subscriber by the way.

At least Disney+ promised no R or MA rated garbage so the Mandalorian won't be MA rated.

Same with Grumpy Old Men. When he was talking to his dad about the neighbor, they butchered the dialog so bad you wouldn't know what was going on if you hadn't seen the uncut version. Had to shut it off and find the DVD

Luckily for you, Apple's TV-MA is pretty tame. See got the rating for one violent scene. That's it. It's watchable.

And this is part of the issue. MA can go anywhere from just one thing breaking the threshold to massively mature

I see this as a older topic, so here’s a update to a couple of earlier posts:

Even though it is PG-13 the F word is present in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Its a sign Disney + is getting closer to adding missing all that newly acquired 20 Century content.

Under the Touchtone name which Disney+ will have Touchtone content like "Sister Act" which is Rated PG but the R rated Touchtone content will be on Hulu.

FYI their streaming service is not fixed on what kind of content it can serve up, this is from around Aug 20th 2020.

Consider this Rumor Mill worthy, but over the last couple of days I’ve been hearing from industry sources that Disney has plans to create a more adult or “PG-13 and above” section of their Disney+ streaming service that would include content from Disney’s various studio labels that isn’t really suitable for kids. The section would require a pin code to access, thus keeping it gated from the kid-friendly content. But the idea is that this is where all of Disney’s new 20th Century content would go. It’s where some of their Touchstone content could go as well. Consider the Alien films, the Die Hard films, etc.

For a long time, it was assumed that all of that content would eventually end up on Hulu. But putting it on Disney+ instead actually makes a TON of sense and here’s why: Hulu only serves the US and Japan. Meanwhile, Disney+’s global reach extends to Australia, Austria, Canada, Channel Islands, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, as well as the United States. So this move would turbo-charge direct access to a large international customer base for all of Disney’s key studio brands.

So as you can see Hulu is not at all where this content will go. This is further evidence that the larger streaming content providers are all changing.

Obviously Apple TV + will go the same path expanding their content though this next year with more adult content.

It's an obsolete mindset I haven't experienced in over two decades...You don't even see those Christian book stores/video stores here anymore. I'm not saying christianity is dead, but the fundamentalism hasn't reared its ugly head in a long time, at least not in Owensboro KY. I'm talking the Ned Flanders style mindset.

In fact, there was even an episode of Babylon 5 that made a total dramatic joke about that kind of behavior. Season 1 but forgot the name of the episode. Involved Dr. Franklin and a group of fundamental religious aliens and their forbidding a lifesaving operation on their child in the name of their beliefs. Not far from reality when extreme religious fundamentalism was the norm.

Off topic: For better or for worse, that mindset is alive and well. Flourished in the 90s really. I suspect this movement is part of what put our current President in office. Again, for better or for worse.

As a confessing (millennial) believer, I see the problems born from this mindset. But I’m also not sure the OP should condemned for desiring more appropriate TV content, even if their method is flawed.

On topic: As someone who refused to watch Game of Thrones because of the soft core, I have yet to find anything in ATV+ that is totally repulsive. Yeah See had some weird scenes, but nothing gratuitous. I would argue ATV+ has carried on the Apple legacy of being for values (Jobs was famously against pornography).

Although we still have video rental places and bookstores. Just not the christian variety. Last one closed in 2004 around here. It's now a Verizon store.

I can't watch 'See.' Jason Momoa is out of his element. He was more fitting to Stargate:Atlantis as the bad ass he was. Any role he tries to fit into today feels wrong somehow. Like trying to see Patrick Stewart in any role that's not Jean Luc Picard.

I have nothing against adult content. I also hate censorship and oppose it. I can watch horror movies, action movies, kids cartoons, the works. I kinda feel sorry for any child raised being hidden from adult themes because it doesn't prepare them for reality when the time comes. Of course, I was raised before even 'bleep' censors were a thing, and shows back then were pretty family friendly. I'm talking Green Acres, Mister Ed, Lassie, Leave it to Beaver, the works.
