My Apple TV keeps turning on itself and my tv by itself at random times throughout the night. Anyone know how to fix this?

Keep the cats away from the remote!
[doublepost=1517323925][/doublepost]Seriously, a few things.

First, if HDMI-CEC is enabled, you could turn it off, that is what is turning the TV on.

Second, unplug it when not using it.

Third, make sure any Airplay inputs are disabled.

Try a Restart in a Settings or unplug for 15 seconds. My ATV 4 did this once and a Restart fixed it.

I don't know who is to blame, Samsung (TV) or Apple, but this is happening all the time with my current setup. I have CEC enabled as well, because why not? It's super convenient and should work!

Somtimes when I shut off the TV, the Apple TV will go into stand-by as expected. After a couple of seconds the Apple TV LED will turn on again and stay that way for hours.

Actually I think it's a software problem with the Apple TV.

I've seen this happening for a long time, using both an ATV 3 and now an ATV 4k. I set the sleep time on the ATV to 30 minutes to at least attempt to turn it off eventually.

I had the same problem for two weeks.

Settings > General > Usage > Background App Refresh > Off

I turned off Background App Refresh. Netflix was the culprit I think. Might have been syncing the 5 users on our account in the middle of the night. Who knows. All I know is that since I turned it off, TV isn't mysteriously on the next morning. I also turned off all automatic app updates both for individual apps and system firmware.

I think one of the apps running in background is to blame for this issues. It's just very hard to diagnose what's happening. I will try turning off Background App Refresh.

Glad you posted this thread. I am having the same issue and it's driving me crazy! I have 2 ATV's doing this. One ATV 4th gen and one ATV 4K. Both started a month or so back. What I have learned and helped until recently..

You can't put the ATV to sleep while it's currently playing something. I was doing this and it would turn on at night, constantly. Going back to the home screen, then putting it to sleep seemed to have solved it.

However, it has started up again the past couple of days. Just got home today and it turned on, which turns on my receiver and my TV (Vizio P65). It's rather annoying. Nothing was near the remote - I was looking at it sitting on top of my speaker. Nothing was using airplay or the remote app on my phone.

It's driving me crazy. I too am going to try background app refresh to see if that helps. Why has this become a problem all of a sudden?

Yes, me too. Just started happening over the last few weeks after many months of no problem.

It is definitely not the remote. I am certain because when I try to use the remote to turn it off, the remote first has to connect over bluetooth and after a few seconds it says "Remote Connected".

Same here. Its not the remote. Its something in the apple tv triggering the CEC.

Has anybody reached out to apple?

With the newer 2017 Samsung TV's, this is the fix I found. With the Samsung remote, go to Settings Area > Source > Universal remote. Then delete Apple TV.

Happened to me last week. All these boxes have same problem, my Roku Premiere does the same.

Haha, I've had this for the first time yesterday morning. I came in the living room and my ATV 4K was watching Netflix. Damn thing was cheating on me and watched 2 more episodes where I left off the night before. Guess it wanted to see what happened after that.

Nevertheless, gonna try to disable the background refresh thingie and see it he dares to do it again. I threatened to sell him to an Android-user, should put some fear in him so he listens ;-)

Mind too. It also springs to life when I'm watching TV or using some other device, seizing control of my TV. Quite annoying.

I was able to resolve this issue by disabling the "Universal Remote" feature on my TV. My Apple TV is attached to a 2017 Samsung UHD TV (6-Series, EU version). The Apple TV would sometimes not go to sleep and the white LED would stay on for hours. After disabling the "Universal Remote" feature the Apple TV will go to sleep after 15 minutes automatically or immediately if I turn the TV off.

The only downside is that I can't control the Apple TV using the Samsung remote. But that's not an issue for me. I can still control the volume of the TV using the Smart Remote.

I did not disable background refresh by the way.

I got a new Samsung TV along with my 4KATV and started having this problem immediately. Will see what happens now that I deleted the ATV from the TV source settings. Thanks for the help in this thread.

Was having the same problem with Applet TV turning itself on. Disabled automatic app update. It's been 2 weeks. Seems to be solved.

Just a follow-up to my post here, turning off background app refresh did not work, I still am seeing the TV turn on in the middle of the night 5 out of 7 days of the week for the past 8 weeks.

Yes, I have read the rest of the thread and have turned off automatic app updates, automatic iOS updates, I have no timers on, I have unpaired every Bluetooth device, and Airplay is even turned off. Something is waking up my Apple TV in the middle of the night and turning on my TV and I cannot figure out what.

I didn't change anything and haven't had it for weeks now. Apple TV is in the beta program so has 11.3 installed...
