Apple's video streaming subscription service, Apple TV+, launched five years ago today.

Announced at an Apple event in March 2019, Apple TV+ was part of a major services push that included Apple News+, Apple Card, and Apple Arcade. At its inception, Apple TV+ began with a modest library of original content, focusing on high-quality, exclusive series, films, and documentaries created in collaboration with renowned creators. The platform launched with titles like "The Morning Show," "See," "For All Mankind," and "Dickinson". Unlike many other streaming services, Apple TV+ did not rely on an extensive back catalog, instead building its library from scratch with original productions.

In the years since, Apple TV+ has expanded its lineup with a wide range of content, including acclaimed series like "Ted Lasso," "Severance," and "Foundation." The service has also made strides in children's programming, documentaries, and feature films, resulting in recognition from prestigious awards organizations. Apple TV+ has garnered multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and Academy Award nominations and wins.

Available across a wide range of devices and platforms, Apple TV+ is available for $9.99 per month and as part of all Apple One subscription bundles.

It’s such an awesome service, but I only sign up for Apple TV+ when the free trials are offered

I signed up using this promotion a few months ago and I think that it still works because it’s on Best Buy’s website:

I think this is the problem as many only see it as a service worth subscribing to if it is free OR short term.

It seems like it has been around for longer than 5 years. Speaking of 5, it was almost a no brainer at $5/month and I was paying it for a while. At $10, I will now only subscribe when a show I like is released, binge it, then unsubscribe.

They are producing really good content, especially the sci-fi stuff. I subscribe to Apple One so that I get the Apple TV+, Apple Music and extra cloud space. Great price for a great service since I'm "all in" the Apple ecosystem.
Yeah, I think that’s how a lot of people are getting their Apple TV+ subscription

Either that way or they’re getting it through their cell phone carrier on one of the top-tier plans because Apple has partnered with Verizon (and some other carriers) to offer Apple TV+ for some of their plans

Yeah. I also thought the lower price seemed more appropriate. I think I subscribed for pay here and there but largely I used free month. I think I must have been subscribed to this for at least two years on free codes (granted one of them was 12 month that came with my sky subscription but it was a code they handed out as a bonus).

my thinking is just that the streaming and tv show hype is over to me. I just watch sooooo much less that for me it would be so much cheaper if I just send them the 15 for killers of the flower moon, 15 for napoleon and idk 25 for a season of severance or foundation. I have stoped all my subscriptions and save so much money by just buying the stuff that is not subscription walled…

It was 5 years ago today
Apple showed the world what to play
While some content might be in and out of style
Something's guaranteed to raise a smile
So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years
Apple TV Plus

🤷‍♂️

Lol the Americans never pay because they have so many trials and the Europeans never pay because there are no trials so it’s safer to just download their shows.
Well, I’m sure Apple knows what they’re doing🤷‍♀️

Can’t say i have seen anything really worth watching on there these days lol

Me either. Once I was done with Ted lasso I moved on.

I tried watching Slow Horses, which everyone on he brags about it, and after 6 or so episodes I gave it. Just had no interest in it.

I think this is the problem as many only see it as a service worth subscribing to if it is free OR short term.
And a random price increase didn't help things. I haven't used a few free trials because I can't justify the price if I forget to unsubscribe, and the last time I tried to stop a free trial from renewing, it cancelled the service that day even though the trial had a few weeks left.

I have a strong memory of watching the launch event, and being both impressed at what they had managed to put together and the celebs they managed to get involved with the launch, and also mind numbingly bored out of my mind watching it. The Hollywood self love fest was a bit too strong with that one.

To make things more confusing? What do we call the Apple TV device then, Apple TV Streamer? 🤣 And what about the app Apple TV?

Doesn't seem to be a problem for Apple Music. And I'm sure people can tell the difference between buying an Apple TV box, or pressing the TV app, and subscribing to it.

Call it Apple TV, it's a stronger brand.

Doesn't seem to be a problem for Apple Music.

It's not a "problem" with Apple Music because there isn't also a media player device called Apple Music. The Apple Music name only refers to the streaming service.

If Apple had called their music streaming service "iPod" instead, it would've created unnecessary confusion similar to your suggestion of using the "Apple TV" name for both their media player device and streaming service.

In terms of Streaming services I use Apple TV+ more than I use Netflix. Right now the only Netflix shows I'm interested in are Arcane and Wednesday, and one of those haven't been on in 2 years (Arcane comes back next week). With Apple TV+, shows like Presumed Innocence, Severance, Silo, and For All Mankind (And Ted Lasso) I enjoyed watching. It also helps that ATV+ comes free with my T Mobile package even though I don't know how long that will last.

I still wish Apple had events that featured their services and home appliances. All this week I was hoping one of the days might actually talk about Apple TV (Or even Apple TV+) and it was all mac. Wasn't there a few years where they did have events solely for services like Apple TV? When they bring out the airpods, that's when they should talk about their other services. Heck, even their earnings call talked about services a little.

One of the absolute best original catalogs of programming, anywhere. I don't like them all (but def most) but they have proven I will give anything a shot.
