Greyhound suffered from not being on the big screen. Finch on the other hand works very well in the living room, as it’s more intimate, less… I dunno, grandiose? There’s a more appropriate word than that but I can’t think of it right now.

Edit: Spectacle! That's the word for Greyhound and why it really would have been better in the cinema.

I watched it, thought it was a pretty good movie, although I found myself wanting answers to a lot of unaddressed issues. Like how he was living in a bunker under a wind farm where only one windmill was operational and when it stopped working the power went out.

Yet he then creates a robot that doesn’t need charging, doesn’t seem to have any kind of significant battery packs, so why wouldn’t he have used that technology to ensure constant power for the bunker? And the robot, not only was he self-powered, but he must have been made with some kind of mysterious super-metal, with motors / servos that could generate huge power to allow it to lift the RV to change the tire.

And the RV had those giant solar panels on it, but clearly the thing needed gas/diesel, as we saw him filling the tank with a gas can, which no way would have been enough to get them from St. Louis to San Fran. So was the RV a hybrid diesel electric?

I get that the point of the show wasn’t to address technical advancements of our dystopian future, but rather how a robot became sentient and human.

I assumed he did need charging, and that’s why they were so upset when the solar panels were destroyed. But then (offscreen) he used his iniative and found somewhere else to charge.

Yeah.. watched it with my 10 yr old. She enjoyed it sufficiently enough. I did think it was "ok". Could've been much better. Overall, it's good for "family time", tho.
That really sums up the problem with Apple TV+. Basically all of it is "family time". Which is ok, especially if you have a family, but it's just not that compelling for many folks who arent looking for that kind of entertainment and makes me doubt they'll ever produce any truly great shows for "adults" like HBO or elsewhere. (and "adult" doesn't just mean throwing in F-bombs every 5 seconds like on the Morning Show)

I enjoyed Finch, but it wasn't amazing. Way better than Foundation though...I got so bored after 4 episodes of Foundation that I just couldn't force myself to keep going.
Foundation has been pretty good since Episode 3-4.

Only thing I can't stand are the fight scenes, which continue to suck.

Riddled with implausibilities that may irk some, but in the end it’s a touching tale of friendship and adversity that stirs the soul. 7/10

You just described every Tom Hanks movie.

Apple TV+ movie "Finch" set a new viewer record on the streaming service, according to Deadline. Citing unnamed sources with knowledge of how well Apple TV+ content performs, Deadline says that "Finch" had the largest opening weekend ever on Apple TV+.

Starring Tom Hanks, "Finch" tells the story of a man, a robot, and a dog surviving in a post-apocalyptic world. From Apple's description of the movie:"Finch" premiered in more than 100 countries on Friday, November 5, and it eclipsed the prior opening weekend record held by "Greyhound," another Tom Hanks film.

Apple has been securing the rights to multiple high-profile movies to bolster the popularity of Apple TV+. In the coming months, Apple will debut "Killers of the Flower Moon" with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, "Swan Song" with Mahershala Ali and Naomi Harris, and "Emancipation" with Will Smith.

This was the most bleak, depressing, and sad movie I've watched since "I Am Legend". Total waste of time. Who cares Tom Hanks is in it. It's a lame movie... cast more in the vein of a short film, just stretched out for over an hour. Ugh!

Well both See and FAMK do exactly that. Sure, they both have some SJW elements but those seem to play well in the stories (no different than "gender swapping" some films do). Foundation certainly leaned into the gender swapping quite a bit, but I think it works well in this story. See and FAMK are very well produced. See is very Adult and no F bombs, but it sure does have the gore. It certainly is a "fight like you mean it" story.

Foundation is fantastic on many fronts. I was a little skeptical/fearful, but I think they have done well. It's not "family time" at all, but with the way me and my daughter watch stuff, it works great. I tell her when to look away (if I catch it in time), and we pause to talk about the story and explain what's going on (she's 10 so she can't pick up on subtly very well....yet.. but she's learning! And fast!). Hell, she already picks up on symbolism much more than I do! She called out the Dawn/Day/Dusk triad immediately during the Cleon 1 flashback when he was gazing out his window (no spoiler). There was a set of 2 circles above the circular window and she noticed the iconography. I totally missed it, but she caught it on her first viewing (it was my second viewing of that episode).

Ted Lasso also was well done. Story, characters, all of it.

I didn't like Physical but I tried to give it two episodes. I just didn't care for the narrating style, like SaTC. Meh.

Invasion started well, but by the third episode it was pissing me off. The side stories of the characters are pointless to the main story. The husband/wife drama is stupid. It's too distracting and has no bearing on "surviving an invasion". That drama is just ... surviving any normal Tuesday. I was fast forwarding thru their scenes in the third episode. I hope they all get eaten or something, so they go away. The other folks... ok, let's see how it goes.

I tried Mr. Corman but got tired of the self-pity and self-loathing. It's just not something that appeals to me. The dude just needs a good therapist for his anxiety. Save your lunch money and make an appointment.

More feature films would be good, too. I didn't see Cherry; debated it, but not sure I care for the story type.

ATV+ needs the content mix and I think they will get it over time. Stealing someone else's comment from some time ago: "lighting up a new studio isn't cheap, nor quick". Apple is doing well, overall, with iterating and building as they go.

I wouldn’t say I hated it, in fact I loved the visuals and the potential. But it’s so disjointed and messy and slow that I didn’t care to keep going. A few people are saying that it picks up right where I abandoned the show, so maybe I’ll give it another episode to see if it starts going anywhere or working for me. Clearly it’s a show that was made with a lot of care (and a huge budget), but it’s lacking any compelling reason to keep pushing through at the moment. I hope to be very pleasantly surprised!
There's a lot of "action" spoken in certain lines of dialog, so it's a bit hidden. Just a few lines gives the telling of what is transpiring. The last scene with Gaal in the pool, for example. You have to listen to her thoughts being narrated to get the clue.

Same for the emperor dudes. There are side glances and nuances with Cleon 14(?). Later, things 17yr old Cleon 14 says and does, for example.

Sometimes, an entire episode may go by before they return to a thread, but they will come back!

Yes the two things most ignored in sci-fi - power supply and gravity.

Don’t get me started with gravity, or how in most space movies centrifugal force is portrayed as gravity. I get that our understanding of gravity is so minuscule that there aren’t many options for dealing with the lack of gravity in space, but these stupid spinning wheel space craft have bothered me for years.

It's kind of like this: You know when you watch a show/movie, and Party A just happens to be at the same place as Party B, in which A and B would NEVER meet. But the movie/show you are watching well guess what? This is the 1 in a million time that this actually happens... and their showing you! That's how like tons of shows are... Super Coincidental Shows, you just have understand that this CRUX is the whole point.

This post was harder to finish than Finch.

I got 3 free months of Apple TV+ trial with my iPhone purchase and I never redeemed it. Didn’t see anything that remotely looked interesting. I guess that’s bad.
I enjoyed For All Mankind, but I wouldn't go out of my way to pay for Apple TV+. I haven't started watching Invasion or Foundation yet. I want to wait for all the episodes to be released, then I can binge them.

I couldn't quite see why The Morning Show got so many awards and good reviews, I thought it was mediocre at best and Ted Lasso has never appealed. I only have Apple TV+ because it's part of my Apple One account.

Apple is certainly spending some cash on movies with A list stars. But without having absolute numbers stories like this one are rather meaningless. Finch has 21k ratings on imdb. This is not a large number, certainly not a blockbuster size. By comparison No Time to Die has 155k ratings and Dune has 150k.
I think Finch getting 13% the ratings of a wide-release blockbuster in theaters backed by multi-million dollar marketing budgets is pretty good, actually.

But it's kind of irrelevant to argue about it, because the only people who have the metrics to know how to define success for their platform is Apple.

Castaway + Turner and Hooch + Carriers (Chris Pine's very similar feeling post pandemic apocalyptic road trip movie) = Finch?

I thought it was okay. The dog was a good actor. I hope he's got a good agent.

I don’t watch a lot of movies and when I do, I can’t focus for too long but I ended up watching this without interruption and I cried like a baby! Ugh. Need more good shorter movies. LOL.

Reminded me of CastAway but just in the Future.
I assume this was made when Covid was shutting everything down so I give them a break.

Nope.

"Filming took place throughout New Mexico from February to May 2019. The film was scheduled to be released in theaters in the United States by Universal Pictures on October 2, 2020, but was delayed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was retitled Finch, sold to Apple TV+, and was released on November 5, 2021."

Hard to imagine this in theaters honestly.

pretty average movie tbh.

i get it was a character-driven movie, and the sci-fi aspect of it was secondary, but the whole backstory seemed too cobbled together and clichéd. really weak world building.

and the character arcs also weren't all that satisfying. made for a really lukewarm experience from beginning to end.

best part about the movie was the character design for Jeff, the team who did that really knocked it out the part.
