I just downloaded Close Encounters again (see my previous posts above) and was able to see it on the AppleTV! I’m not sure what format it downloaded it in , not sure where it downloaded the movie to, and I didn’t think to check what the default settings for the AppleTV app is now.

Why the new download and not checking the settings? I bought an M4 MBP recently, had a problem with the migration so ended up doing a complete clean install. I have always kept movies and music on an external drive (now an SSD) and with the clean install, it doesn’t automatically go to the library and I can’t seem to get it to recognize the movies that are stored there. I also can’t get the music app to recognize any of the music files that are stored there (many were ripped from CDs, back in the day when you could do such things) - but that’s probably another story.

In any case, the new downloaded Close Encounters shows up on the AppleTV. I’m delighted, but now I need to find out where the file is. In trying to get the app on the computer to recognize my previously downloaded movies, I found it won’t recognize the folder or files - I can see them in the finder but when I try to add them to the app, they don’t show up. I don’t have a huge amount of downloaded media and the new computer has a large drive, so it’s not as big of a deal to keep what movies I want on the internal drive.

Edit to add - the new download is on the computer hard drive and downloaded as an .m4v file.

Good news, indeed, Joel996C4S. I just saw your post, and tried downloading some of the movies that previously downloaded on my Mac as .pkg files. I just tried downloading a small sample (15) of these movies, and they all download fine on my Mac now. I tried downloading some movies I purchased as recently as 12/31/24 and some purchased as long ago as 08/02/23. They all download now as .m4v files just as they should.
Nice! It only took Apple 3 F**^ing years to make 2 of their devices work together to play things you bought from them.
