I agree that this remote is way over-designed. What's wrong with the traditional remote with buttons? Nothing.

As above doesn't allow for precision control. I hope that Apple finds a way to make the keypad more useable. My frustrations are that in swiping left or right I often go up or down a row instead of left/right. Or I swipe and nothing happens.

Orientation, not being able to find issues I find are handled by putting it in a case with an Apple loop.

In the cases where I am using precision control I marvel at how well it does that.

I’m not buying precision control here. Sure, it may give precision AFTER if f@cks up where you were at completely. Should not have to put tape on it, a case and treat it like it’s glass. Very poor. If you friggin sneeze too hard it brings up the time bar and leaves it there on the bottom or the audio controls at the top.

Isnt this exactly the opposite of precision control? The fact that your swipes don’t do anything or land you on the wrong tile?

The touch pad really is part gimmick like the Touch Bar. You could get by just fine with regular buttons, but Apple wanted to push the experience envelope and didn’t really improve the existing experience.

Love ATV, hate the remote. In my main TV room I use my Harmony with no issues. But we have four of these damn things.

Still use the leftover metal remotes from our prior versions.

I think I’m going to have to dig out my old silver remote. I didn’t realize it worked with the new ATV as I thought the new spec was BT.

You can use any IR remote with the ATV, not just Apple's silver one. I even tried using an iRobot Roomba remote and successfully controlled an ATV.

Just keep in mind, you may need line-of-sight for IR remotes.

Not thin enough. I am pretty sure at Apple that have a wall of slots for various products. "Your product must be this thin to get to market."

No, that's not it. This remote may be the same thickness as the previous remote. Maybe it's thin+lightning+siri=release.

I have older and newer Apple TVs and therefore have both the old and new remotes - neither are particularly great although the newer one is definitely worse. I use a bluetooth keyboard for my Apple TVs so I never have to use the remote.

OH yeah my TV remote also works with appleTV. Worth trying the arrow buttons and menu/ok buttons on your TV remote to see if they work if you have a recent TV.

It’s like you need to make sure you put it in a secluded area after you start a show or god forbid you touch it.

I curse the awful ba$tard daily. Trying to run on a treadmill and control YouTube is like trying to shoot a bird in the air with a bow and arrow, while riding on horseback. It looks easy in the movies, but is a new adventure in frustration every single time...

Maybe. But I would rather put up with this minor inconvenience than giving up precision control. If I get really aggravated I use my Harmony remote, but usually find myself going back to Apples' remote, as annoying as it can be. I'm using the Apple remote almost all of the time now rather than the Harmony. Much simpler to use with just the menu and home buttons. Lighter.

I think you are defining precision control incorrectly.

The harmony remote is actually more precise. Each d pad click is exactly one tile. If you use the touchpad and accidentally swipe instead of touching its edge, you risk going over more than 1 tile. That by definition is the opposite of precision control

I think what you’re saying is you like to quickly go thru tiles then switch to single tapping when you need. I wouldn’t define that as precision control though because there is a lot of room for error. For example, the text entry strip bar on the Apple TV is very cumbersome to use with the touchpad

Hmm, I like the remote when compared to the plastic crap you get with a tv, disc-player, etc.

Got a reserved spot to put it, next to my Dual Shock 4 controller and tv-remote, so I never sit down on it :p

I absolutely hate the Apple TV remote. I tried to defend it for a long time, but can't anymore. I think I used the Siri feature once or twice when it was new, but never since then. We've used DirecTV Now (At&T TV NOW) for a vacation condo, but I can't tell how often we accidentally brush the remote and it changes channels. What these tech companies don't get is what is right and wrong with cable/satellite. I want a numeric keypad, channel +/- buttons, and directional cursor (D-pad). the swiping only works well on the ATV remote when on the home page. I do better with the phone or watch apps, because I don't accidentally change the channel. That swiss remote seems perfect.
What Apple doesn't get is what's wrong with cable/satellite isn't the remote. It's the high price of monthly rental fees, endless bundles, and lack of a la carte TV. It's not the remote, it's the hardware rentals and the content options.

Funny your statement on I tried to defend the remote, I did exactly the same with other family members as they messed up what we were watching, they passed over watch they wanted to stop on, they were unable to pause and restart where we left off, etc. I proceeded to use the device like I was walking on eggs and proclaiming, "see, it works". But it just doesn't. Like any successful Apple device (see iphone), anyone should be able to pick it up and it be intuitive on how to use it for what you want it to do. It just fails.

It seems like the biggest advantage that people mention about the Siri remote is the ability to scrub video, which I guess is nice, but it comes at a huge disadvantage to basically every other aspect of a remote.

I hate the endless swiping with the Siri Remote. For example, the endless swiping of scrolling through thousands of photos on the tvOS photo app. Holding a down button makes so much more sense in cases like that.

I know people say if you don't like the Sir Remote, use the iOS remote app, but I don't like that either, as it trades the touch pad and some physical buttons for a touch surface and no physical buttons. Oh yeah, and no volume buttons.

That swiss remote seems perfect.
Except that is missing a Home/TV button, and I am pretty it is IR.

I would like a bluetooth remote with all the buttons that are on the Siri Remote, but also with playback buttons and a D-pad.

Well documented I know but I had to get it off my chest. So friggin frustrating. How could Apple take a very well designed remote and replace it with this touchy, frustrating, POS. It’s like you need to make sure you put it in a secluded area after you start a show or god forbid you touch it.

Got that off my chest. Maybe the worst designed Apple product EVER.
I don't mind the remote itself most of the time, but why do cheaper boxes with bigger remotes have find my remote tech and ATV doesn't?!?

Like the remote much more than the old clicker one. That is a just clunky and take ages to input passwords. Have a strap for games. Have both and never use the old or very very old white remote from the iPod days. We are different how we interact with HMI. The new remote just work better for me. 🤷‍♂️

Some moron design it so it would fit in the box, not for use. I bought 2 64G ATV one for me and one for my mom. I knew after getting it it would be trouble for my mom and heck had trouble too. Especially hitting the Menu button to select vs pressing on the touch pad which sorry I could never retrain myself to do. So I returned both and just use the AppleTV on Roku app because the Roku remote that works great! What a blunder!

I have no problems with the remote and in fact like it.
