Just add a Plex app and I can get rid of my Ruko. Just allow me to stream (mainly youtube) from my PC (aka Chromecast) and I can get rid of my Chromecast. Is that asking to much ? lol.

i really don't care what the price is. i'll buy it, and i'll use it. will i cut the chord on directv? not until i can also get nfl sunday ticket through apple. but, when that happens in 2017, i'll have slowly weened myself off of directv and can use apple's interface.

take my money!!!

You can currently get an online sunday ticket subscription and connect a laptop to your tv via hdmi or via AirPlay through appletv.

i'm not so sure they are directly competing with microsoft and sony. i think an xbox and playstation will still be different beasts when it comes to power and type of games. but nintendo won't be too happy if they entered the market with a motion based casual gaming console with huge developer's support.

Right, I wasn't trying to say that they are trying to compete on hardware (power). I was simply pointing out that for those who can be happy with the quality of iOS games (which is MANY), someone buying a piece of hardware to hook to the HDTV for gaming may be pretty tempted to go with the presumably much cheaper (new) :apple:TV4 than Xbox or PS. Why? Price. If the gamer doesn't necessarily want the horses in those 2, :apple:TV might push their gamer buttons "good enough" such that they choose to save the money on the hardware purchase (and save much more as they build up a collection of games).

Obviously, they have and are, if rumors are true. They have probably been working on this for years and I can guarantee you that after 9/9 this will no longer be a hobby. :)

I don't know if i would use "obviously" and that sounds certain. I wish I had a $1 for all of the proclamations that have been made here about the next :apple:TV model being released "soon". I have to believe there is a pretty good chance it may actually happen this time but many of us thought the same (maybe even with certainty/obviously) ahead of WWDC... and last year about this time... and the year before that... and the year before that. Some of us have been very confident about impending launches many times in between those times.

I think the new :apple:TV rumor is perhaps the most prevalent impending-launch rumor of all Apple products (since Powerbook G5 days). It's always just about here. Hopefully, this time it may actually show up.

Ummm, did you mean 2017 or approx. 2022? http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/2/6890465/directv-sunday-ticket-nfl-deal-renewed 2014 + 8 years = 2022. Or maybe the renewal is an extension to whenever the existing deal ended (so it may be until some time beyond 2022).

I hate the Apple TV remote. It's a horrible remote. It's so thin it gets lost. All the time. I should put a bell on it.

Anything would be better than the current remote. I use it daily and continue to have issues with my fingers vs the donut arrow button. YMMV.

I would usually agree as I tend to think the iPhone should be the remote for most things. However the Apple Tv controller is beatiful. I like the shape, it fits well in the hand and the texture feels good but more so i like the weight of the remote, it has a weight to it that is reassuring and gives a sense of quality.

While I was annoyed at this being delayed at the WWDC, I can get behind Apple taking the time to do it right and have it polished rather than rushing it out full of bugs and deficiencies.

Still kind of annoying though - for having so much cash they sure don't seem interested in having any extra engineers on hand to get things done in a timely manner.
Do you honestly think MONEY is what makes humans get the job done faster? Ever thought that they were waiting for specific components to build into the AppleTV and they weren't available yet? Ever thought that Apple's supposed store for the AppleTV wasn't complete and they didn't want to put out the hardware before the store was ready? Ever thought the product might be more than just an "Apple TV" and offer a lot more and Apple wants to make sure this feature-rich product is ready for primetime? Money doesn't get things done faster if things aren't ready.

Some of you guys here focus too much about Apple's bank account. If it was just about having money then Microsoft wouldn't be struggling to get out of the dark hole they are in.

Well you may not like the new Apple TV remote then, it could be even thinner if Apple's track record of thinness is anything to go by.

This would be great for games, and adding an App store for those games would open it up so much, Angry Birds (for example) would be great for this along with many other games/Apps.

No, it would not, I have the Amazon Fire TV and it has had an app store since launch. I have tried a few games on it and only a few transfer well onto the big screen, other games are rubbish to play on a big TV as they are designed for the tablet and phone screens.
The power of these streaming boxes is tiny compared to a console, and the games are the same. Some games work, a lot don't.

At the end of the day it is up to Apple and the developers to come up with something that works. Anyway as most of the games are freemium crap then it's a moot point anyway. Pay £40 for an entire console game or £140 for in app purchases in an app store game, unless you want to grind away.

I never lose my remote, and if I do, I just use my iPhone to find it...

An A8 chip? They should have a custom chip designed for graphics performance (Apple AX variant). Apple TV won't be updated for a few years after release so performance will decrease over time.

And will it run Kodi? If Apple did allow Kodi in the App Store for Apple TV to run it, I am sold! Hate using an old laptop has an HTPC but it actually works.

If I could change anything on it, I would add the iPod scroll wheel for FF/RW.

I like the leverage argument in the article. Here is the deal, I don't have a cable box connected to my main TV because surfing TV is lame compared to going to iTunes and immediately buying the program that I want to watch and then watching it without commercials. I even waste some time checking to see if NetFlix has the program so I can get it for free. Almost always it doesn't have it. I've got HBO on my Apple TV, so I get their high quality programming and movies whenever I want it. For sports programs I stream live through my Fan TV. But the device is underpowered and a bit precious to use. Yes it has glass touch remote and basically no buttons. They tried to do the Apple thing and just went farther than their tech and hardware could actually achieve. The thing would be much nicer if they had simply included a freaking power button.

Anyway, how many hours are left in the week to turn to other TV offerings? If this box is better, then I will spend even more time there. If the cable shows don't want to be on this box, so be it, I will watch them less. For the younger generations they just want to watch Twitch and YouTube anyway. They aren't going to cable TV. Cable TV is going to realize they want to be on the best hardware. I'm sure Apple TV will be the best hardware.

That said, I am deeply skeptical about the new gaming potential of this new controller. Voice control and touch control has not worked very well for gaming so far. But I'm closer to "hardcore" gamer than I am to casual. So I'm clearly not the target market. But still it would be simple obstinance on Apple's part not to allow bluetooth game pad controllers to connect if they are the appropriate controller. The A8 chip will be more than powerful enough to run hardcore games. That require fast twitch game play. That needs a controller with push buttons.

So I'm looking forward to better TV/Movies. I'm looking forward to some interesting Apps. I'm looking forward to some gaming. But my XBox One will remain the gaming platform. And the Fan TV will remain the source for live TV since they have the licensing rights from the Cable Company. But slowly Apple TV is going to eat those other guys. I'm pretty sure of that.

If Apple have been working on this as long and as hard as it seems then they may of thought about this. I do really believe that the Apple TV needs more functions, an App Store could do this, adding games could help with casual gaming. I'm not saying it will replace the XBox or PS4 for proper console gaming, but what about games such as Angry Birds? And with this rumour (if it's true) about the motion sensitive remote it could be really good. obviously this is going to depend on games and as you say some games won't work, but others might, people might be more willing to pay £1-£3 for Angry birds on the Apple TV, or racing games that use the remote.

Also as another person has said, Nintendo have confirmed previously that games will be coming to IOS, what if these games make it too the new Apple TV?

It will be something even more powerful than the A8X that is on the iPad Air 2. It will be custom built for the Apple TV and for the consistent power supply. But it won't have a dedicated GPU outside of the chip.

Use the remote learning feature. Then you can use any remote that you would like.

Does other platforms have this feature? Such as bluray, roku and others? I know my parents bluray doesn't have it, but their bluray is like 5 years old.

Voice controls have been around for freaking ever. They're not innovative at all - every game using them has completely sucked.

Voice controls just aren't suitable for video games. Any timing based gameplay is impossible. And games which are fun that don't use timing based gameplay require more complexity than is realistic with voice controls.

Voice control is going to be targeted toward managing TV viewing. "Siri, I want to watch 'Orange is the New Black'". Done.

that's what i meant with "types of games". i don't think, that an apple tv would be good enough for most people who like playstation/xbox types of games.

4.99 a month get's you about three games a month on psplus, some of which are pretty complex and huge. and there's used games.

you're right, the'll beat them on price, but not by that much. and i doubt it will eat into sony's or microsoft's sales that much.
