And once again, the stage is set for clueless Americans to flaunt their ignorance and prejudice against the EU.
I’m going to grab some popcorn.
"Notably, the broadcasters' letter asks the Commission to apply the DMA based on "qualitative criteria," even where platforms don't hit the usual quantitative benchmarks outlined in the regulations.

The request may sound like it's on shaky ground, but the DMA does actually have a provision for this circumstance – the EC can designate a company as a gatekeeper even if it doesn't meet the hard numeric thresholds stated above. It can look instead at factors like the platform's size, number of business users, network effects, lock-in, and structural market characteristics. In fact, this is how the Commission designated iPadOS as having gatekeeper status, even though it didn't meet the quantitative threshold."

The EU can kick rocks.

European posters usually have a more rational approach in these discussions. They use facts to justify their positions.
Yet ironically, this issue is raised on "qualitative criteria" and not any quantitative facts. The glorious DMA allows for this subjective criteria so everyone and their brother can shout that they don't like something and demand their government fix it for them. I get it though, it would be too much to ask that they just follow the more "rational approach" and buy the other product.

What do they actually want though? It's not clear to me from this article. I'm assuming they want the "right" to junk up the Apple TV interface and insert more of their own advertising and anti-user practices.

They might just want to be able to sell their product on Apple TV devices. I know you can buy/rent through Amazon, but that's only because of a special deal Apple granted them. I'd love to have competitive pricing in the Apple TV environment.

I don't believe he would threaten the EU.

You do know who runs the parent company of Paramount+, right?

The Association of Commercial Television and Video on Demand Services in Europe (ACT), whose members include Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount+, and Sky, sent a letter on Monday to EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera arguing that smart TV operating systems from Google, Amazon, Apple, and Samsung should be designated as gatekeepers under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

This person's daddy financially backed the merger of Skydance and Paramount. He's also financially backing the pending merger of Paramount-Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery.

And this family is part of an investor group that took control of TikTok US.

I think your "Douchey Orange Narcissist" will put this family's interests ahead of the US.
You're not wrong.
BUT.
I think Tim Apple still hold some big sway with the orange penguin. That half a Trillion dollar investment in the US is not a nothing burger.

Surprisingly their prices for “purchasing” shows are surprisingly competitive, it’s the interface that constantly gets worse.

Unrelated to the topic but after auto corrupt changed “shows are” to “shoes are” well after I was past that part of that sentence, that’s it, I’m turning it off. I’ll fix my own actual typos rather than autocorrupt making them for me.

I take zero responsibility for the DJT's previous or current presidency. 😉

It’s lobbying. You know why? All the Dinosaurs lose market shares because younger generations don’t watch them or linear TV. They don’t want to deal with Sky and it’s lock in and hard to cancel bs. Streaming made most of them irrelevant. They probably think: Guys the problem is not our content or what we offer. It must be the smart TV and Siri. View attachment 2616304
The fact that it’s so hard to cancel Tells you that EU is not out to make things better for users/subscribers, just like with the App Store and paying outside the App Store!

Hope apple cancels revamped Siri and the new TV software on the EU. They can live with their own tech.
Good call. Let’s punish them by forcing them to keep their privacy laws and universal chargers while we enjoy the 'innovation' of a $1,000 screen stand and a healthcare system that costs more than a Vision Pro just to look at an X-ray.
Have you been to a gas station lately?

Better yet, give them what they want. They want advertisers to easier track consumers. Give them that and feed them tons of targeted ads.
Yeah, give them targeted ads while they use the money they saved on free healthcare to buy things they actually want. Meanwhile, we can enjoy our personalized commercials for debt consolidation while paying $500 for an EpiPen and $2,000 a month for a studio apartment with 'industrial charm' (exposed pipes and a broken heater).

"Listen, I’ve always said, I love Europe. I have a lot of friends there, great people, very smart. And what they’ve built with the EU, it’s incredible, frankly. They have a system—some people call it 'free stuff,' but I call it a smart deal for their citizens. They’ve got these healthy, educated workers, the best in the world, and they’ve created a market of 450 million people. It’s huge!
If our big tech companies—the biggest, most beautiful companies we have—want to come in and make billions and billions of dollars off those people, they have to respect the rules. You can't just take and take; you have to contribute to the neighborhood. The EU is just being tough, like I’m tough. They’re protecting their people, their culture, their infrastructure. They’re saying, 'If you want to play in the best sandbox, you’ve got to help keep it clean.' And I respect that. It’s about fairness, it’s about reciprocity. We’re going to work together, we’re going to make the greatest deals ever seen, and frankly, a strong Europe is a win for everybody!
Thank you for your attention to this matter."

Look @Nekronos @neuropsychguy . This is exactly what I am talking about. What kind of post is this? Where are your comments and laughing reactions now, hm?
I just skim these forums so I miss a lot of comments and didn't see that one. Going back and reading it now, I don't agree with it, but the commenter wasn't being offensive towards Europeans. As for criticizing the EU, that's misplaced until/if something comes from this petition.

As for laughing at one of your comments -- weren't you trying to be funny? It seemed like you were, so I laughed. It's great to laugh. I laugh at myself several times each day.

Let me fix that for you:

“And once again, the stage is set for those clueless Europeans to flaunt their ignorance against government overreach. I’m going to grab some popcorn.”

You’re welcome ☺️
Hold your horses! Fact is:

“A coalition of Europe's biggest broadcasters is pushing the EU to bring smart TV platforms like Apple TV and virtual assistants like Siri under the bloc's toughest tech regulation, reports Reuters. … The European Commission confirmed it received the letter and is reviewing it.”

I'd love to see everyone pull out of Europe .. they can go back to using Nokia and a DOS operating system. While not the fault of the average Europeans, the regulators have determined that the only way for them to live somewhat sustainably is to fine companies for their success. "Well Apple has Billions, no big deal if we take 20 of them". Their perceived value of using a product is very skewed and think its their inherent right to benefit from the profits that other companies make. this is absurd.
The complaint comes not from the regulators but from the broadcasters association which includes US companies. The EUC agreed to review the complaint. No decision has been made yet.

You can poke the Americans with trigger words like "EU", and some of them will come running, arguing against the EU without even reading the story... 😂

You think we have time for that? It's not like we get a month off for vacation.
Or even a couple weeks.

Lets talk again, when the FCC made your existing WiFi equipment so insecure that you had to throw it out and buy new very expensive StarLink routers. LOL

EDIT: Sorry for bringing facts into this. But this made me laugh so hard...
