Couldn't you already stream video to the AppleTV with Airplay? Wasn't there a commercial about it?

I'm confused.

Only pics and videos from the camera roll

And some apps allowed it but not many

This makes everything airplayable if thats even a word, what ever u see on the phone you will see on the tv like a mirror

But only with the iphone 4s and ipad 2

Can't you just upgrade to ios 5 without iTunes

Right from the apple tv

Read the post he's responding to… lowonthe456 cannot navigate the AppleTV menus, his AppleTV is stuck with the "connect to iTunes" graphic on screen.

This is also wrong. Previously you could also AirPlay videos you synced from iTunes or purchased/downloaded from the iTunes Store. It also worked with some apps, like YouTube, Air Video and lots more. And some embedded web videos. But not all -- some web videos would only send audio, but not video. There's been a jailbreak hack called AirVideoEnabler, that allowed all web videos (and some apps too) to send audio and video.

Now with iOS 5, you should be able to AirPlay all web videos (without needing a jailbreak hack to do so.)

Airplay mirroring does the whole screen, so it's useful for lots of other stuff, like gaming or web browsing or demonstrations. It works line HDMI mirroring, only it's wireless.

That being said, just like HDMI mirroring, some apps WON'T work with Airplay mirroring. HBO GO, TNT, and Hulu for example… they don't work over Airplay fullscreen mirroring on iOS 5.

Trailers ??

The Update talks about Apple Trailers on the Apple TV and I can't seem to find out how to access this feature. The message includes an icon of the iOS app for Apples App for Movie Trailers. Did they pull this?

No App store... still?

Hockey? Really?

No live.twit.tv?
No NASCAR Raceview?
No Amazon Prime Video?

It's likely a welcome upgrade for current owners, but still leaves the AppleTV severely lacking compared to a mac mini...

To the Mac mini...you do realize it costs $99 vs $699 yes?

I'm excited for the NHL package. Disappointed that it's $159. I figured it would be cheaper since the MLB one was only $100. I'll still get it though. AppleTV keeps getting better and better.

Cable free for over a year and don't miss it at all.

Ironically, I got a microUSB cable from my old Nokia phone.

My Apple TV stuck on the big Apple logo screen right after the update.

I'm gonna restore it tonight.

I wonder if this update will fix some of the many problems people have been having with the "Setting Time and Date". Long thread on the Apple Forums

I wish it would have fixed the way seasons show on my mac mini library ... but it doesn't. Under tv shows, there is no reason I should see all 4 seasons of Castle in that menu, I should see one Castle, then after clicking, I should see the 4 seasons. The tv shows list is is way too long with MASH seasons, Columbo, ... etc. I keep submitting the feedback but I get no response.

How does the photo streaming work? Is there a place to put in your iCloud id? I use a separate appleid for purchases, and another one for iCloud. The purchases one was always in the ATV.

Yes you can put in a different apple id for purchases and photo stream.

Its still not perfect though. It would be nice if you could put in several ids for photo stream, and easily switch between them instead of having to type them in each time you want to change.

For instance, my wife & I have an iphone 4 each on 2 separate iCloud ids. If I want to display her photo stream I type in her iCloud id & password. If I want to display mine, I type in mine. If I want to change back to hers I type in the whole damn thing again on that slow onscreen character selection thing. Which is a PITA!

I was so fed up with having to bounce between my ATV2 for Netflix and PS3 (the black hole of energy consuming devices) for Hulu+ that I caved in and bought a Roku XS yesterday. Disconnected the ATV2 last night and enjoyed using the Roku.

Fast-forward to 5 minutes ago, and I saw the headline stating an update for ATV2. I was dreading the thought of Apple adding Hulu+ to the ATV2, but I guess I made the right choice yesterday.

Taking Airplay and Netflix out of the equation, what do I get by keeping the ATV2 in my theater setup? I'd like to keep it, but the Roku smokes it feature-wise.

Taking the trouble to jailbreak ATV2 makes all the difference in the world. And it is a lot of trouble but TOTALLY worth it. I'm running Netflix, Hulu and various other goodies all from ATV2 and loving it. No need to keep yours now since you've got a Roku, so feel free to pack it up and ship it over to me. I'd make good use of it. :D

(It's actually $599 for the base mac mini, so it's only a factor of 6 more expensive than the ATV2. ;) )

I mean, I've been quite disappointed with my $10k Suzuki Aerio. I mean, the Lincoln Towncar is just way better, and only 6 times the cost! :p

THIS.

It wouldn't make sense for everyone in your family to use the same iCloud account: all your photostreams and e-mails and calendars would mix together. So most families are going to have multiple icloud accounts, one for each iOS user. There ought to be an option on the Apple TV to choose between multiple photo streams. This should also be implemented for the Vimeo, and YouTube apps.

I see this as becoming an issue with the iPad as well. We have one family iPad that we'll all use. So who's iCloud account do we use? Or do we create a new "family" iCloud account? This is also an issue for things like iMessage on the iPad. (whose iMessage account do you use? Can't we have a method to switch back and forth?)

Right now apple has its iOS devices set up for single users. This is perfect for iPhones and iPods. But for Apple TVs and iPads there ought to be an easy way to switch accounts, enabling multiple users.

This confused me too, but there is no "Trailers" app or heading. Movie trailers are split up by category. The new opening screen made me think that there would be an app like heading like all the other new features. An earlier post here describes this in detail.:)

As of October 14, 2011, games that would be normally blacked out on all devices including Macs and PCs, iPhones, PS3s, etc. are NOT blacked out on the Apple TV 2. I expect that this will be 'fixed' at some point but it's a nice bonus right now.

NHL Game Center Live terms and conditions states that any games that are locally televised in your area will be blacked out.

Say I live in Vancouver and there is a Vancouver-Detroit game on Sportsnet and a Winnipeg-Chicago game on TSN, those games will be blacked out on NHL GCL. Or I live in Las Vegas, and an Anaheim-Colorado game is on a local station and Pittsburgh-Montreal game is on Versus, those two games would be blacked on on GCL.

only local teams are blacked out, unless the NHL does it different than the NBA and MLB

I think it's different. I live in Vancouver so most Canucks games were blacked out as well as anything broadcast on the national stations CBC and TSN... however I was able to get Canucks Pay Per View games, those are premium games so I guess they don't consider them locally televised. I'm an Oilers fan so I get almost every Oilers games except the ones broadcast on CBC, TSN, or the local Sportsnet.

However absolutely nothing is blacked out on the Apple TV 2 as of yesterday.

AppleTV Bricked?

OK, so I ordered this cord yesterday and Amazon Prime got it to me this afternoon. I connected my AppleTV to iTunes and then it restores, gets to the very end of the status bar and does't go any further and now the LED is blinking fast on the front. Anyone know what to do? I have never jailbroken my AppleTV and I am not sure what to do.

Any help appreciated
