Built in to the box? Makes zero sense.
Yeah. Maybe if they add support for USB cameras or something like that. I don’t own an ATV but my first instinct would be to bury it in the TV furniture somewhere out of the way. My TV is wall mounted and the furniture is quite low compared to the TV. Awkward placement unless you are looking to do “UpskirtTime” instead of “FaceTime.” 😆

Could be a good package offering
  • USB wired/wireless camera that sits on top of the TV or underneath with a MagSafe mount (wireless=no need to connect to the Apple TV, but mus be powered via USB)
  • Hi-res / ultrawide sensor to allow Center Stage as per the continuity camera feature
  • Presence sensor to allow the camera to act as a security camera --> Also pushes iCloud subscription to store captured footage
Also the, smart home display should just be a new range of iPads with MagSafe that can then be attached to mounts that can be kept around the house like the recent Google tablets.

If the Apple TV gained a built-in camera, users would no longer need to rely on an external device.
Its would be impractical to utilize because most of the time the placement of the Apple TV is not right in front of you. If you have a stack of gear to the left or right then would someone be inclined to run AC or HDMI extension cables to the rest of gear next to your TV?

I thought the current implementation of using your iPhone placement as the camera close to you and your TV as a big screen for the FaceTime was perfectly usable. This avoids any placement/distance issues with the physical locations of the Apple TV.

What useless speculation to desire as it would just greatly increase the prices of Apple TVs IMHO to have a built in high quality camera. Do consumers really want that? :)

If the Apple TV device gets a camera it should be a very good camera.

macrumors might have the worst spell checker on the Internet.

Why does the AppleTV need a camera? I'd like to see them focus on making it more affordable. It's by far the best streaming device out there, but it's so expensive that some review sites won't even consider it, compared to Chromecast, Roku, or FireTV, all of which pale in comparison. I can't believe the hardware is that expensive to produce.

I think it could be a lot of fun! Imagine being able to play games without controllers! I.E. similar to the Kinect of years ago - only better and with improved technology... Control the channels or volume with the movement of an arm. For privacy sake, you would need a physical door that you could shut on the Apple TV box. That or just have separate TV camera dongle to attach to the Apple TV. I am sure there are a lot of use cases I am not thinking about. Pet Cam... Maybe as game console to play with others... Based on all the things that apple has been doing, it makes sense... Continuity camera, FaceTime on TV, increased gaming, apps for retro console gaming. Not sure if AI would play into it or not??? But it would be a great way for Apple to grab the living room space and increase their share of the home space... Plus get an AI foothold in the Home space... Hal 2024...

A future Apple TV box could have a built-in camera for FaceTime and other video calling apps, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

tvOS 17 added a FaceTime app to the Apple TV, allowing for users to have video calls by using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad. If the Apple TV gained a built-in camera, users would no longer need to rely on an external device.

In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said an Apple TV with a camera would support "gesture-based controls," but he did not provide any additional details. Starting with updates like iOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and tvOS 17, you can make hand gestures during video calls in the FaceTime app and other video calling apps to fill the screen with 3D effects. For example, you can hold two thumbs up to show fireworks on the screen, or make two peace signs with your hands to show confetti. It is unclear if Gurman is referring to this feature, or if there would be all-new gesture-based controls for tvOS overall.

In other home-related news, Gurman said Apple has also considered a "lightweight smart display" that could be used around the house.

Here's everything he said about these devices:It is unclear if or when these devices will be released. Gurman previously reported that a new Apple TV would be released in the first half of 2024, but it is unclear if a camera would be added to that particular model, or if it is still further away.

Why blame Apple, just Mark Gurman spinning his make believe stories as usual. ;)

No. If Gurman made up stores he’d lose access to Apple. As we all know, Apple is exceptionally tight about who they talk to and they will cut off communication at the drop of a hat if they dislike what you write about them. So the fact that Gurman continues to have access demonstrates that Apple is fully aware of everything he reports and are likely responsible for most of it.

i want more colors for the ATV. this black is outdated. Colors like homepod minis.

I don't think so, a company would never use an external press participant when they can do their own interviews with press. This is very different from those YouTube parties that receive early look access to products that helps Apple's marketing. I am familiar with a Forbes writer that does the same, and he usually gets his hints from attending events or private shows where he talks to 3rd party retailers, or tips sent his way via different communication arrangements set up for that. Also from reading what other people present online as possibilities. :)
