I don't think so, a company would never use an external press participant when they can do their own interviews. This is very different from those YouTube parties that receive early look access to products that helps Apple's marketing.

Except that companies do this ALL THE TIME. They use journalist access to make strategic leaks and in some cases to mislead competitors. I’m not talking about YouTubers. I’m talking about journalists like Gurman.

That is an interesting topic, there are of course the supply chain conundrum, meaning leaks are always possible even with the best security and for a lot of rumors that is how we find out by tech company mistakes with web sites, in coding, in documentation providing details sent to part suppliers, and in legal documents. MacRumors is excellent in documenting that.

But turning to the specific you brought up, that apple engages in proactive teasing or a reactive approach who really know to what extent they do and don't? The only thing we have experienced by observation is the degree of denial all the Apple staff have shown to being questioning by the press about anything and really talking a lot without dropping any hints.
Be interesting to know if anyone has some definitive examples to show that tactic being used these recent times. :)

They really, really, really need to put M3 in the next Apple TV.

The current gen is just laggy and jittery.

When Continuity Camera exists, why would they bother?

When the MOBILE phone leaves the house, this feature goes with it. Unless everyone at the house has an iPhone, CC is not a continuous solution. AppleTV is pretty much anchored wherever it is placed. So a camera that can also be anchored seems to fit nicely.

Building it inside of the box doesn't make much sense at all to me (see prior post) but making it possible to connect a camera (as would be seemingly easy & cheap with one "normal" USB port), would be a "fits many" solution to a continuously available video conference want.

I have the Portal TV, FB messengers version of this (in the picture below). It sits underneath the TV about 12 feet from where we sit. It has the zoom feature just like FaceTime on iPad and works brilliantly. As much as I hate FB & messenger, it is the only decent TV camera I can use.

Apple did not invent video chats, but they made it super popular with FaceTime. It’s about time they integrated it properly into the biggest screen of the house.

Here me out!

What If Apple Quantum-Dot Organic Light Emission Display "Smart" Television?!
Whom Is Being Agree with my Idea? Tim Cook Should've Been On-A-Board with the Idea.

and to Top it off making it Serveral Sizes! Ranging from: 34", 57", 78", 86", 110", 136"; (Making Bezels of TVs really THIN) + maybe something like: Apple TV Cast (tvOS Dongle) it's not a bad idea of what I am Thinking right?

How many people are really asking for a gesture-based Apple TV? The current remote, while high quality, is a little fidgety with the touch inputs. And adding a camera seems mostly like a way to charge more for it. Why wouldn't someone use their other iDevice for facetime?

Kind of, except that it isn’t exactly convenient. It would be better if Apple made (again) a dedicated FaceTime camera that could be mounted wherever an owner wanted.
I don’t see it. iPhone is convenient given everyone already has one and uses it to FaceTime if they FaceTime.

Meanwhile an ATV product with a camera feels like an awkward Apple product. A separate camera would need its own power source and have to be wireless. A camera on the ATV itself makes little sense. Both drive up the cost of an already expensive streaming box. Apple would have to supply a mount of some sort. Doesn’t add up.

Meanwhile we have seen the iPhone used as a webcam in Apple ads.

When the mobile phone leaves the house so does the person generally speaking. Doesn’t sound like an issue at all. It sounds like the Apple world gets more sticky.

ATV not going to get a usb port so someone can plug in a camera. That doesn’t sound like Apple.

This would only make sense if they increase the aTV range (and why not...Tim loves complicating an easy to understand choice). Your standard aTV and one with a built in camera. But 2 isnt enough for Tim, so they'll also be an aTV Air but just to make it a confusing choice the Air will have the latest chip but less ram than the standard model which will have an older chip but more ram.

How would a camera work in the aTV? My storage is full of screensavers I have almost no control over.

Kind of doesn't sound like Apple. But it also does sound like them. Apple is very capable of adding a USB C connector to the back of an Apple TV. They do it with the iPad, MacBook, iPhone and all are capable of having keyboards, cameras, HDMI and pretty much any other device working seamlessly with those products.

When you consider the way the Government are going after Apple for deliberately locking out alternatives, it would make a lot of sense.

It will never happen, but I wish Apple would make an actual good laser projector with Apple TV and HomePod built in. It would cost like 2 grand but I would absolutely buy one day 1. Something similar to the LG Cinebeam Q but with the Apple magic.

It makes zero sense if I'm rounding off.

It sounds nothing like them.

Their capability is not the issue. They are capable of making a crappy dirt cheap laptop too. But they don't.

They only recently shrunk the ATV and lowered the price. They aren't going to enlarge it with a USB port. And ask people to run a cord from inside their tv media centers and behind their tvs.

"The government" is a nothing burger reason for making an ATV with a camera/USB port for a camera. That would be like farting in the wind.

What makes the most sense is using the iPhone as the camera because they already do this with the Mac. Because they like making stuff that uses their products together in a "it just works" way. The iPHone already has a great camera.

Google says the consumer can already hand off a Facetime call to an AppleTV. Having an ATV FT app would let the consumer initiate it from the ATV and position the iPHone camera first. I think you always gotta start with the path of least resistance when interpreting these rumors aka what makes the most sense which is to be found on the path that is already mostly built that sounds the most Apple-like.

Now take your post and apply it to a different home than apparently yours... one where there are family members still at home... or roommates, etc. Yes, single guy living alone has no problem at all when their mobile stuff goes mobile with them. But unless everyone else in the FAM and/or all roommates have iPhone too, the ability to video conference is dependent on where that phone is at the time. A dedicated camera as anchored at home as the AppleTV itself does solve that problem for those interested in something other than continuity camera for this feature.

As to your suggestion of no USB-C port revival, I agree- Apple will probably not do that. And yet, putting the same port that works with the same hardware in the other iDevices would make it possible to give the AppleTV much more flexibility. I'd leap on 3 replacement AppleTVs if they could revive that first generation media sync feature and Zone 2 Analog audio out (which could be accomplished through a USB-C dongle)... but wouldn't want that forced on everyone else by building bigger storage into all AppleTVs (and thus much higher prices). There's 3 quick sales for Apple for this one household alone for sync and zone 2 support revivals.

A USB port could allow wired gaming controller connections for the gamers vs. depending on Bluetooth and that latency.

A USB port could easily facilitate this camera concept much easier and more sensibly vs. inserting a camera in the AppleTV case itself, forcing it and its cost upon those who would not want the feature at all... or want it implemented in that way.

Etc. The hardware guts to support a port is already in there, so Apple would have to choose to provide the port again- as it was included a few generations ago- and the little box would gain a lot more utility for hardly any increase in Apple cost. Added utility might make more people buy the box. Apple Inc. loves 💰💰💰.

A future Apple TV box could have a built-in camera for FaceTime and other video calling apps, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

apple-tv-4k-yellow-bg-feature.jpg

tvOS 17 added a FaceTime app to the Apple TV, allowing for users to have video calls by using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad. If the Apple TV gained a built-in camera, users would no longer need to rely on an external device.

In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said an Apple TV with a camera would support "gesture-based controls," but he did not provide any additional details. Starting with updates like iOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and tvOS 17, you can make hand gestures during video calls in the FaceTime app and other video calling apps to fill the screen with 3D effects. For example, you can hold two thumbs up to show fireworks on the screen, or make two peace signs with your hands to show confetti. It is unclear if Gurman is referring to this feature, or if there would be all-new gesture-based controls for tvOS overall.

In other home-related news, Gurman said Apple has also considered a "lightweight smart display" that could be used around the house.

Here's everything he said about these devices:It is unclear if or when these devices will be released. Gurman previously reported that a new Apple TV would be released in the first half of 2024, but it is unclear if a camera would be added to that particular model, or if it is still further away.

The robot that Apple is rumored to be developing will have an integrated Apple TV and a camera. You can command it during facetime sessions to change viewing angles, distance, location. For example: “Hey Serious, climb up on back wall bookshelf high enough *** for aerial view of coffee table.” Did I mention that you can configure it at purchase to ship with a drone companion that has the AppleTV on board instead?

*** If Serious reports “working on it”, you may want to turn your head towards the back wall.
