Been away from home for the last 2 weeks, I get back and notice YouTube is a bit more Crispy McCrisperson looking and thought "Noooooo, Finally? Did it finally update?"
Yessir.

January 2021 and the situation with the YouTube app on Apple TV 4K is this...

- If a YouTube video is 4K/30fps then it will play in 4K on the Apple TV.

- If a YouTube video is 4K/60fps then it will play at 1440p/60fps on the Apple TV.

- The YouTube app does not support HDR on Apple TV.

I personally believe this is all due to a restriction of the A10X Fusion in the Apple TV 4K. The iPad Pro 2017 10.5” also uses the same A10X Fusion. YouTube app is restricted to 1080p, no HDR on that iPad.

Very, very weak. This is software decoding VP9 I assume, rather than YouTube moving to AV1 as they said they would.

No HDR support is just inexcusable. To my eyes it's vastly, vastly more important than 4K

If that’s the case the new ATV this year should handle it easily.

That’s pretty good for the Apple TV 4K. No complaints about that, but then again, YouTube on Apple TV is not a priority for me.

If Apple updates Apple TV, I’ll probably get one, but not because I want to upgrade my 4K. I’d get one because I could move the existing 4K to another 4K TV I have, and then move my HD model to another HD TV. On that last TV I have an old 2nd gen model. It works but it’s problematic.
