There is a strange pricing discrepancy in the Canadian Apple store between the MacBook Neo and the iPhone 17e

Both of these are $599 USD, but the MacBook Neo costs $799 CAD, while the iPhone 17e is $899 CAD for the base configurations.

In today's exchange $599 USD is $818 CAD, so the Neo is slightly underpriced, and the 17e is strongly overpriced.

I understand if the prices were different were they released many months apart, but they were released just days apart, in the same release window.

Elasticity of demand. iPhone holds the line. Same reason why Apple Store refurb MacBooks show up within 90 days of launch while iPhone takes 24 months minimum.

No new AppleTV makes me sad
Why upgrade now? For a faster processor that won't provide any benefits? Manufacturers are phasing out 8K TVs. Dolby Vision 2 won't be available in TVs until next year at the earliest. HDMI 2.1 is sufficient for current use. So why bother? Buy now because new ones will always be around the corner.

Apple doesn't use exchange exclusively in their CAD pricing. Things like origin of shipment, duties and taxes also play a role. Not all items have the same overhead and markups.

In some ways they announced what I hoped for....new displays...but at the same time, what they announced was just odd. Trying to decide if I should pickup two Studio Display XDRs or try and find two decent Pro Display XDRs on the second hand market...pricing looks to be fairly close. For professional photography I'd like the extra pixels and screen size and don't care as much about the 60Hz vs. 120Hz.

Wanted to get a regular iPad for my nephews birthday that’s coming up and a new Apple TV for myself. Let’s see if they specbump the iPad by tomorrow.

Apple this week unveiled seven products, including an iPhone 17e, an iPad Air with the M4 chip, updated MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, a new Studio Display, a higher-end Studio Display XDR, and an all-new MacBook Neo that starts at just $599.

iPhone 17e features the same overall design as the iPhone 16e, but it gains Apple's A19 chip, MagSafe for magnetic wireless charging and magnetic accessories, Apple's second-generation C1X modem for faster 5G, and a doubled 256GB of base storage. In the U.S., the iPhone 17e starts at $599, just like the iPhone 16e did.

The new iPad Air's key upgrades include Apple's M4 chip, an increased 12GB of RAM, Apple's N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 support, and the C1X modem in cellular models.

The MacBook Air received a faster M5 chip, and a doubled 512GB of base storage, but the starting price increased from $999 to $1,099 as a result of a 256GB configuration being dropped. With the N1 chip, the MacBook Air now has Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and it now comes with Apple's 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max.

The higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models finally received M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, plus up to twice as fast SSD speeds and a doubled 1TB of base storage. Battery life has increased slightly across all of the models, and the N1 chip extends to the MacBook Pro line now for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support.

The regular Studio Display gained Thunderbolt 5 support and improved speakers, and the camera now supports Desk View. There is also an all-new, higher-end Studio Display XDR that gained all of those benefits, plus bigger improvements such as a 120Hz refresh rate, mini-LED backlighting, increased brightness, and more.

The colorful new MacBook Neo starts at just $599 in the United States, and at an even lower $499 for college students. Available in Blush, Citrus, Indigo, and Silver, the MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone, and it is equipped with a 13-inch display, up to 512GB of storage, and a non-configurable 8GB of RAM.

Apple also released new color options for a variety of accessories, including iPhone cases, Apple Watch bands, and the Crossbody Strap.

No base iPad! 😭

Was kinda expecting them to upgrade the $349 iPad today but it makes sense. They wanted max exposure on the Neo. This thing also is intended as a counterweight to the iPad - basically people who don’t want to use iPadOS.
And likely signpost people towards the $599 iPad Air before the $349 iPad is updated...
Nothing was going to steal the new MacBook's limelight today. I think we'll get a few new products tomorrow , but they will just be spec bumps, and I believe the base iPad will be one of them.
I think if they were going to update it now it would have been at the same time as the iPad Air - both are just chip bumps. Various sites have reported from the Experience events today that the iPhone 17e and iPad Air are very unexciting updates, so I don't see why they would hold back the iPad and extra day. The MacBook Neo (and possibly M5 Pro/Max chips) are the big stories this week so very unlikely anything else will follow.

The current Apple TV only has some HDMI 2.1 features, not a full fat HDMI 2.1 implementation. I don't think the current model supports 40-48 Gbps bandwidths for 4K120 (which is useful for gaming, smoothing the menus and a good frame rate allows 24, 30, 60 & 120 fps content to display cleanly), or VRR.

Id still imagine more because Cook posted that weird little video to X where it seemed like it was referring to a touch based device.

Dedicated AV1 hardware acceleration in newer chips not in current ATV4K model.

I guess we’ll get the mac new mini, studio (and maybe mac pro?), at a different set of announcements

Though maybe they’ll spec bump them tomorrow

Thanks pal, I had no idea. If I knew, I would've added on the part about buying a base iPad if you need an iPad.
My dude, if someone wanted a base iPad instead of the mini they’d already be buying that, it’s cheaper. The mini is small enough to be pocketable, light enough for easy extended one hand use… it’s also a very different product than the regular iPad
