I turned the keynote off because it was getting long in the tooth and missed this. This is a strange device...
Amazon Echo $180
Sonos Play1 $200
$200 + $180 = $380
Even that's not a fair comparison, since the Sonos PLAY:3 can do stereo by itself.
It takes TWO HomePods to do that.
Bose is quality and reputable but the Soundlink is subpar compared to many others on the market.
sonos you can play apple music...
I don't get why people are surprised/disappointed at the price. Amazon and Google's business models aren't making money off hardware. Plus Apple is positioning this as a superior speaker. No way was this thing going to be $199.
Lol, the negativity around here is ridiculous.
This is awesome. I've been waiting for Apple to update AirPlay to allow for Sonos-like functionality. If this sounds like Play 1, this would be a good value. If it comes close to my JBL8's sound quality, this is a steal.
Why would you think it can't do stereo with seven beamforming tweeters?
Not comparing it personally to Sonos. Comparing to Amazon Alexia and Google Home. Both have a direction of AI and skills. This HomePod is mostly focused on Music. In this regard is a miss IMO.
The success of this product completely hinges on the improvements to Siri.
So what's different about Airplay 2 vs Airplay?

I have a Bose Soundlink mini and the sound is amazing for a BT device.
I think multiple-zones (rooms) .. it's basically something that Sonos (and Google Chromecast, i think) had for years and a feature that people really like.
