So After 5+ years of Apple moving mountains, they finally manage to come out with a Modem on what was supposed to be out in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023...... No 2024 because Macrumors commentators finally realise may be it isn't happening.

But only for the new model to charge at higher price, where are the supposed savings Macrumors commentators have been suggesting Apple doesn't have to pay a single dollar for patents to Qualcomm? In case it still isn't clear. Apple still have to pay Qualcomm for 4G/ 5G wireless patents.

Or May be it is 2025 we can finally say they were wrong. And let the Apple Modem Meme die.

I think this is another revolutionary step just like Apple Silicon from Intel. Be aware that Qualcomm is in monopoly for modem markets.

Everyone is talking about Qualcomm here but who cares besides shareholders?

I want to know what hardware possibilities this unlocks for Apple hardware in more detail. We saw a huge advancement with memory and their CPU. What about the modem? How do 2 Apple devices, both with the modem, benefit when compared to 2 without the modem? Are there any irregularities on their new chip? Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will get their hands on the chip soon and do a YT video or something

3 hours of more video streaming time compared to the standard 16. Quite impressive!
It’s 4 hours more actually (of video playing). I get you may not be impressed, but would you want to have your current iPhone to have 4 hours less than it does now? 😉

I'm fully assuming when they roll this out in their normal/Pro phones it will have mmWave

Seems unlikely. mmWave is kind of a dead-end technology and Apple have apparantely focused their efforts elsewhere with the C1. They may not ever consider it worthwhile to support mmWave in their modems considering mmWave deployments are so limited globally, and show no signs of momentum. Apple has only ever shipped mmWave in select iPhone models shipped in the US, not any other country.

However, apparantely the normal/Pro iPhones will continue to use Qualcomm modems for now, so thus should continue to support mmWave in the US. Only the 16e and 17 Air are said to be using the C1 this year. We could maybe also see a situation where Apple ships the C1 (C2?) in global iPhone models but continues to use Qualcomm modems in US mmWave models. In the past, Apple has done similar with different baseband modems in different markets.

I’d disagree with this. It has usefulness in large cities which is where it is deployed. I’ve lived in the suburbs in the Midwest and in SF. Both places I am constantly receiving mmWave

Consumers who don’t care and won’t notice the speed drop (if there is one), because mobile/radio signals are already so chaotic and unpredictable it is impossible to expect a stable, strong signal at any given moment in time and space - in the real world.
Probably not 99% but ok.

Apple and Qualcomm have had a long-term contractual purchase agreement that runs until 2025 at a minimum, with options for it to run through 2027. This was publicly announced by both corporations.

It seems that Apple is taking advantage of the agreement's extension window to roll out its modem.

Wow, the same phone again.

Apple operates an incremental ship...

16e is about phasing out older tech and having a cheaper iPhone that is just as capable at all the basic functionality. It clearly separates Pro from non-Pro.

It's also the perfect way to segway in new tech, such as C1, without high risk.

I'm still running a 13 Pro and have zero need to replace it. The 16e should easily last 4 to 5 years for the target market.

It took Apple 4 years to produce their first custom CPU designs after buying P.A.Semi. 5 years for a custom modem design after buying up the mess that was Intel’s modem division, is not unreasonable.

Wait, what? iMacs? Why would the cellular modems be incorporated into a desktop, like the iMacs?
Because there are already 5G networks that provide much faster network connectivity compared to what’s available at homes or public WiFi. I would love having cellular on my MacBook Pro so that I am connected no matter where I work from.
