Apple today released a new 4C170 firmware update for the AirPods 3, an update from the prior 4C165 that was made available in December.

AirPods-3-New-Firmware-Feature.jpg

Apple does not offer details on what's included in new firmware updates for the AirPods‌, so we don't know what improvements or bug fixes the new firmware brings.

There is no standard way to upgrade the ‌AirPods‌‌ software, but firmware is generally installed over-the-air while the ‌‌AirPods‌‌ are connected to an iOS device. Putting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ in the case, connecting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to a power source, and then pairing the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to an iPhone or an iPad should force the update after a short period of time.

You can check your ‌‌‌AirPods‌‌ firmware by following these steps:
  • Connect your ‌‌AirPods‌‌ or ‌‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Tap ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌.
  • Look at the number next to "Firmware Version."
If we find notable changes after the firmware update is installed, we'll share details, but the software likely focuses primarily on performance improvements and bug fixes rather than new features.

I hope they fixed AirPods 3 case battery drain. AirPods are working great regarding battery life but case is a nightmare for me, loosing power without using AirPods. My AirPods 1 gen case was waaay better.

Here's hoping this fixes the "A Airpods3 has been traveling with you..." notifications I get every day for my OWN AirPods. Sheesh.

I wonder if they could add transparency mode to the AirPods 3. They probably could with the hardware that is in there, but they also probably wouldn't do that.

Mine won’t update. Any tricks?
tricks are found in Las Vegas. you'll see the driving billboards with their phone numbers.

they accept credit, but cash is preferred....

if you want the best service, ask for Trixie and tell her that Kirk Lazarus sent you ;)

Expect to get eVERY FIRMware and UPdate when service(s) are being performed.

I have to ask….

The last person that said that, didn’t realize their AirPods actually automatically updated. So check your settings and firmware update first, to make sure they didn’t already automatically update when you didn’t realize it.

My AirPods Pro have a strange problem - when connected to MacBook 99% of time microphone sounds terrible- really robotic. I've replaced them twice - always the same issue - very annoying- I've stopped using their microphones
during zoom calls. Been troubleshooting it with apple support 3 times (safe boot, Bluetooth reset, etc) problem always returns but only on MacBook. They sound great with iPhone. Now I think it's actually a problem with my MacBook - especially a Bluetooth module. Going to apple Genius Bar this Thursday expecting to get that fixed / replaced.

Does anyone face similar issues?

Is there a chance that at some point an update could bring physical volume control to airpod 3’s or am I wasting my time even thinking about it?

I Am so sad. Today like 2h ago I put my AirPods 3 as everyday for yoga and the almost instantly disconnected and reconnected few seconds later, first left one then right. Since then I hear a quiet clicking sound anytime I even open any quiet app and close it, or anytime I press keyboard to do a sound, it clicks half second before doing the sound then I hear white noise for few secs. Sometimes the white noise stays until I go back to main page of the phone

Wtf ? I am mad and sad. I don’t want the return or repair hassle to begin. I did hard reset of iPhone (13 PM), reset the pods. Now they are 4c170 from 4c165 but still nothing fixed. Aaaaaaassa.

4C170 seems to have improved the auto power on/skin detector feature. Before this firmware mine were really flaky about turning on when inserted. After the update they consistently turn on when inserted as expected. Great to have that issue resolved, I was thinking that it was hardware issue but it apparently was not.

I don't think they care to fix something here. In apple's world you're supposed to own an Apple watch and use the crown for quick volume control. Or just you know.. do the sensible thing and just blurt out "HEY SIRI RAISE THE VOLUME A TAD" while sitting on the subway.

How else is anyone going to announce to people within their environment that "I have Apple, I'm better than you, and I'll show it"

.... and then proceed to get mugged on said subway because you have valuable Apple possessions with you.... ah I love the smell of irony in the morning.

does the update make them stay in your ears better?
Mine only fall out when I’m tossing and turning while asleep or if I don’t twist them in. As long as I insert and then rotate back do the stem is facing down & forward they lock in place for me. How do you wear yours?

Since you’ve already tried resetting I suggest draining the batteries (just connect them and play a long playlist overnight or something even if you don’t hear anything.

Once they are completely dead, insert into the case and charge for 30 mins then reset via the case again. I’m just taking a guess here, I don’t know that this will work but I’d say it’s worth a shot. Good luck!
