Apple today released a new 4A402 firmware update for the AirPods Pro, which is up from the prior 4A400 firmware that was released back in October. Apple has also updated the AirPods 3 firmware to 4B66, up from the 4B61 that was previously available.

Apple does not offer information on what's included in refreshed firmware updates for the AirPods‌, so we don't know what improvements or bug fixes the new firmware brings.

There's no standard way to upgrade the ‌AirPods‌‌ software, but firmware is generally installed over-the-air while the ‌‌AirPods‌‌ are connected to an iOS device. Putting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ in the case, connecting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to a power source, and then pairing the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to an iPhone or an iPad should force the update after a short period of time.

You can check your ‌‌‌AirPods‌‌ or ‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌ firmware by following these steps:
  • Connect your ‌‌AirPods‌‌ or ‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Tap ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌.
  • Look at the number next to "Firmware Version."
If we find notable changes after the firmware updates are installed, we'll share details, but the software likely includes performance improvements and bug fixes.

I have the occasional problem where one will sync to one device and the other to a second device (both mine.).

Sometimes it seems to occur (exclusively?) when I get down to 10% and pop one in the case to charge, then swap to charge the other side.

When I put the 2nd pod back in my ear and hear the missync, I have to put them both back in the case to resolve this.

My car does the same thing. It will go from the iPhone to the car bluetooth system in the middle of a call. I have to disconnect my car from the BT devices before I start driving.

Perhaps they fixed the automatic switching between the Mac and iPhone bug? It was promised 2 year ago and nowadays it doesn't work automatically. It only shows a notification asking me to change manually.
I've been testing out this multipoint connection thing with these soundcore headphones. In some ways, it's better than switching on my AirPods pro in that it only happens when I want it to where the auto-switching happened too much.

iPhone BT car audio connections are pretty awesome. It takes a few seconds for the changeover, but the sound is a lot better, and people that I am talking to say my voice sounds better too. All I know is the wife hated talking while driving before she got a radio capable of BT. Now, she'll talk the whole voyage home if I let her.

Edit: (No, I am not kidding!?And when she gets home, I get it: 'So, you don't want to talk to your wife?' ? Yes dear, of course I do. 'I should find someone who will want to hear my voice!' Oh gawd, no. I have to save someone else from this, somehow.:D(She still yells at me when I call her in my car, using the Bluetooth system. *shrug*))

Furthermore, customers cannot opt out of these updates.
Worse... Customers who update will either find that it's already been updated or have a hard time updating.
It would be nice if Apple released something telling customers what it updated and made updating easy.
Hopefully, Apple fixes the update issue in the next version, APP 2, next year or so, like including a small button to press just for updating.

Knowing what's in the update isn't really all that helpful. It's not like an iPhone. The thing that gets me is waiting for days or weeks, months, for updates. We *should* have a way to force the updates, or at least some way to urge them to update sooner.

I also have this issue. I’d be curious to what kind of car this happens to you? This happens to me with Ford Sync in my Taurus SHO. It’s annoying, but it’s intermittent.

In some states I think the use of in-car bluetooth is mandatory. If I'm on a call, and hop in the car, starting it results in an eventual switch to the car audio system. Once it's attached, it seems to stay until I turn the car, or head unit off.
