Knowing what's in the update isn't really all that helpful. It's not like an iPhone. The thing that gets me is waiting for days or weeks, months, for updates. We *should* have a way to force the updates, or at least some way to urge them to update sooner.
Some people skip new updates until the next update so it's good to know if they can choose to update now or wait until the next one.

Apple needs to focus back on QC on its current software for all their devices as it's been buggy for some users instead of focusing on selling new products which has been a sore spot for many users.

But if we can't avoid it, and can't force it, why do we need to know what it updates? I'm not happy about it either, but it's out of our hands. Well, at least until Apple gives us some kind of control over the process.

Apple SHOULD say something if it impacts sound which is not fair - it's not right to change sound profiles and not say what you've done - optimised.

Many of you complain about not knowing what's updated, and that you cannot force it. Remember that very few manufacturers update their stuff at all!

I am very curious though about the famous "first firmware version", it would be nice to try how it was...

So much angst over this topic. Why?

I read the article, checked status; it was still on 400.

Put back in case and closed it. Opened 1/2 hour later and checked; updated to 402.

Painless, quick and whinge free.

Those people who can not update, can obviously 'choose' (not by choice because of Apple's ridiculous method of updating) not to update. They don't have to worry about updating then.
Apparently, updating is an ongoing issue for many APP owners, if you review other online forums about the subject.

Perhaps they fixed the automatic switching between the Mac and iPhone bug? It was promised 2 year ago and nowadays it doesn't work automatically. It only shows a notification asking me to change manually.
I'm pretty sure it works fine the way it is now. Anyone that's listening to something on their iPhone with AirPods and then goes and wakes up their Mac, is not going to want the AirPods to just switch to the Mac.

You know why there is no manual process to update your AirPods? Because the update is not so important that you need to manually install it right this second. Whenever it rolls out to you and installs itself, that's when you get it. You don't need it any sooner than that.

Edit: lol the downvotes are hilarious. FYI - this is what Apple thinks. Which is why there is no manual process. It’s simply not that important. You’ll get it eventually.

If you heard the original firmware's ANC, you'd understand that the hardware is capable. It's just infuriating that they artificially hampered it.

I remember it well - I had the Apple assistant person demonstrate to me by asking her to scream at my ear in the store. She was highly amused. They worked very well. Since I’ve had them at home they’ve been quite poor.

At least let us control it! The original firmware had amazing performance. RTINGS has the measured drops across updates and it’s infuriating that they pulled it back to what we have now.

You don’t need to go into General to see your AirPods firmware version now. You can also see it on the Bluetooth screen for that device, it’s displayed towards the bottom of the screen.

Fact is that it performed too well and now it’s middle of the pack. Just go read the reviews at launch and you’ll see that it had fantastic ANC with the original FW. It was a pleasure walking out of the Apple Store when I got them as it muffled the world as I strolled around NYC. I was shocked at how well it performed on the subway, they were even better than my then class-leading Sony WF-1000XM3 with Comply tips.

I’m still not sure why they would neuter one of their better products like this.

And no, I’ll never get over this. lol.

I think something must be wrong with them. I just got the firmware update and I can't hear anything at all with ANC on.

I've gone through several pairs of them already due to various connectivity issues (just got a replacement Right one on Tuesday actually) and they've all performed the same, that is, never like the way they used when they first came out.

I've started to use the Comply tips with them and while it's not the same, it's better than the stock tips.
