Apple today updated Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, its video and audio editing apps designed for professionals, to version 10.5 and 10.6, respectively. The new software updates introduce improved performance and efficiency on Mac computers with Apple Silicon, along with new features that take advantage of the Apple Silicon Neural Engine.

Apple's release notes for the Final Cut Pro X update are below:

- Accelerated machine learning analysis for Smart Conform using the Apple Neural Engine on Mac computers with Apple silicon
- Option to create a copy of your library and automatically transcode media to ProRes Proxy or H.264 at various resolutions
Apple also has release notes for Logic Pro X:
Improved performance and efficiency on Mac computers with Apple silicon
- Adds the ability to control Step Sequencer using Logic Remote on your iPad or iPhone to create beats, bass lines, and melodic parts
- Supports all Novation Launchpad controllers
- Stability and performance improvements (edited)
MainStage, Compressor, Motion, and Logic Remote have also all been updated to go along with the main Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro updates. All of the software can be downloaded from the Mac App Store.

Logic 10.5 fundamentally changed how you can interact with the app and completely overhauled the sampler. FCPX 10.5 just adds support for Apple Silicon? That's... underwhelming.

Can't wait to try both of these updates. I ordered an Apple Silicon Mac Mini with a M1 Chip. Will test both of these updated programs once the M1 Mac Mini arrives. Nice to get native Apple Silicon support. Thanks Apple!

To put it lightly. Three years since 10.4 and this is what we have?! Wow...I think I see now why they promote Resolve in their promotional videos lately.
Is FCPX lagging behind competitors like Resolve and Premiere? I know FCPX faced a lot of criticism as it was launched... is it still like this?

Depends how you measure it I guess. Certainly not lagging premiere in core editing, as premiere is ******* (no offense premiere users). Resolve has big update frequently though. Biggest things people seem to want for Fcp are better audio tools and collaboration tools.

As an Adobe Premiere user,

NOT AT ALL.

There may be some features missing and bugs but Premiere Pro still isn't optimized for the Mac (or Mac Pro even) and FCPX is just WAY FASTER. There are advantages to Adobe and Davinci and FCPX and Avid and etc. so it's still up to the end user, but when it comes to speed on a Mac system it's hard to argue against FCPX.

On Topic: I can NOT wait for the 16" MBP with AS SoC.

Been there since day 1 loving fcpx *but* just switched to Resolve (and switched my uni with it). We need braw editing and the free version is just amazing with students learning online.

Will miss elements of fcpx but Blackmagic are so much better with support and upgrade schedules and the audio editing in Resolve is light years ahead...

I hope they update FCPX to take better use of the ProRes Raw coming out of the A7siii. We need to be able to control ISO, Whitebalance and get metadata off the camera. Don't know if that's a sony thing or an Apple thing though.

Been using FCP for... ever. Professionally. As mentioned above, it really does depend on your workflow / collaboration / deliverables, and as is the case with many things, there are ways to get things done regardless of NLE.

PPr is pretty much unusable on my trashcan for anything other than the most basic things - it's torturous compared to FCPX.

Unfortunately it is. It's been largely forgotten in the professional world. A lot of prosumers love it for how fast and simple it is but you'll never walk into some Hollywood studio working on the latest big hit and see FCP.

Saddest update of all time! DaVinci Resolve introduced incredible features like auto-rotoscoping this week –160 pages to describe all the new features –and diehard FCP users get compatibility with computers that are untested for video editing with 16GB RAM max. (yes mini can handle whopping 64GB) and no eGPU support.

It dropped support for 10.14! And I can’t go back to the office tonight and disable auto update. If it gets updated, is there any way to re download 10.4.10?

Looks like it does actually include Dolby Vision compatibility.

Final Cut Pro 10.5 also includes the following:
  • Export HLG high-dynamic-range projects with Dolby Vision 8.4 metadata for optimized playback on Apple devices.
  • Fixes an issue in which LUTs were not available in optimized or proxy clips.
  • Improves appearance of HDR thumbnails in the browser and timeline.
  • Improves reliability when previewing built-in sound effects in the browser.
  • Fixes an issue in which audio waveforms would not update in the inspector after adding a filter or making a volume change.
  • Fixes an issue in which chapter markers were not available when sharing.
  • Improves reliability when creating proxy media from non-square pixel interlaced clips.
  • Improves stability when applying stabilization and color balance during import.
  • Fixes an issue in which audio sync could drift when retiming clips.
  • Improves reliability with Social Media content positioning when using Smart Conform to switch between vertical and horizontal frame sizes.
  • Improves reliability when using onscreen Crop controls in the viewer.
  • Fixes an issue in which copying stills between libraries would result in duplicate files.
  • Includes built-in support for Avid DNxHR® and Avid DNxHD® decoding and playback.

It won’t update to a not compatible version. Same as iOS doesn’t update to next version on non compatible iPhone.
My 2010 Mac Pro won’t, yes. But my 2018 mbp that runs Catalina probably will tonight. That’s the issue, I want them to be on the same fcpx version
