Could anybody who has already grabbed the update add any detail to this... Any parameters, compression settings/maximums, audio options, etc to give us a sense of what makes up that particular preset would be much appreciated.

Here's the defaults, does that help?

You can find satisfied users of all different brands of editing software.

What are they using in (Culver City) the motion picture industry for editing? Is there a standard that pretty much everyone uses? Like ILM, etc. What's the gear?

It's been 297 days since the last update.
And now this? WTF. Minor minor update?
Does Apple still has staff developing FCPX?
Disappointed. Very. I am a pro editor and am using FCPX since 3 years. Defending FCPX in the pro landscape where I can.

Pffff. I hope they are preparing a huge 10.3 update. There are so many things which could be improved.

Hope shared by many really.

I tbh am getting aperture flashbacks. Minor updates (broken up over long time spans), no word (or rumor even) of big things on the horizon. then one the one day its mentioned at a conference...was the day they put a bullet in its head.

Here was me hoping that they would finally make Compressor 64bit but alas here I go back to iFFmpeg with a 64bit ffmpeg binary that produces h264 videos faster, cleaner and smaller than Compressor. Have Apple more or less just given up on life or something?

It appears Apple is going through that phase of "should I pull the plug and say goodbye to the world?"

Of course.

funny I see this, and It includes bad grades from back when it was the skimpy first version.

I find it interesting that there are few two star ratings. The haters really hate. (and to a lesser extent the lovers really love. myself included, I love it for multicam and one person editing.)

i am always amazed when people make negatIve comments about updates, for it clearly can be seen that the company is still working on improvements to their software. Plus, if you write code, EL Capitan has its challenges with the new graphics platform.

I remember the days when updates to software ONLY came during a yearly upgrade, regardless of how many bugs were in the program when it was first released...and were usually a PAID upgrade if you wanted improvements. At least they are trying to fix the bugs and shows that they are working on the software.

I for one welcome the update and hope it fixes some of the issues I have had with a major project that I have been working on for the last two weeks. Risky yes, when applying an update in the middle of a major project....but I ALWAYS save the last working version of the app if the update is a lemon to go back to since you cannot download an older version (learned the hard way one time with another project). Also, a rule to do is backup the project before applying the update.

As far as Avid's Premiere, great product...but....AVID has gone to a subscription based plateform, so no thanks Avid. Will stay with FCPX, Logic Pro X and Sibelius 7.5. All of those complainers about FCPX, a one time $299 price tag cannot be beat, especially now that FCPX generally is a good product and works mostly.

I welcome any improvements.

Obviously this isn't true. Who the heck uses Premiere and loves it? Um. No one.

I'm assuming that quote was sarcastic; because I haven't yet worked with another studio that uses Final Cut X. Only time I've used it in the past 2 years was with a non-profit that just 'had it' on their mac. (*update for honesty's sake: And one other time, but it was a rather small production company making youtube videos, mostly.) I can say most people love Premiere; save for a few recent changes that still baffle me...but those tiny changes don't bring it anywhere near the amateur hour - FCX. If you haven't used the entire CC suite together, I can honestly say you're missing out. I was a die-hard FCP fan, but adobe has upped their game the past couple of years, and Apple is just fumbling along. I'd gladly switch back to Final Cut if apple ever made it advantageous over the current CC offerings.

True, for me it appears that if there was a graph to represent product quality then Apple's line would be descending and Microsoft's line would be ascending but the question is whether we've reached the point where two lines intersect as Apple seems to be whipping themselves into a frenzy over iOS at the detriment of OS X (this forum being a depressing example of just how many iOS device owners who have never owned a Mac) whilst on the other hand Microsoft realises that you've got to take care of all your customers by having a common core that is shared between the XBox, traditional computing as well as emerging technologies - Windows 8 gave Microsoft a giant boot up the backside which resulted in Windows 10. The movement to Windows 10 has resulted in regular incremental improvements (aka rolling release) not to mention Redstone later this year and Project Centennial (win32 apps bundled as appx packages and distributed through the Store) that we'll see the decline of OS X as the iOS fanboys jerk each other off inside and outside of Apple over the 'future of computing' - when that day arrives it'll be a sad day indeed.

I think you hit it right on. Unfortunately, this MAY be the case...

Maybe this will be the rise of the open-source community and the era of "Linux" and it's brothers. What choices do we have if we are not satisfied with the way the trend is going for any operating systems?

Do not like Windows 10 and its prime (Google) directive Borg mentality. OS X may be low on Apple's now "money focus" todeum pole. Now directives: iwatch, iphone and toy cars: meaning super hero spy-ring cartoon-jetsons agendas, including virtual reality glasses...? cartoon agendas...no more productivity improvements..

I thought technology was to improve humanity, not regress to child-like behaviors...

I have to admit that MS is doing better in taking care of people; HOWEVER, since the release of window 10 with behind the scene spying capability...I can't give full credit to them. Tim failed to take care of computer people...and that's a problem.

So much gratuitous negativity in this thread. I guess always telling that Apple will drop things might make you right sometimes.

Most disappointing update ever... waiting for MONTHS for an update for Metal support and they come with this? What happened?

Nice use of explicitly sexual imagery to make a point. Remind me not to let my daughters ever read macrumors.

Speaking of women, are there such thing as fangirls? fangurls? and do they jerk each other off? I got to stop now.

My wish list includes the rather basic, 'configurable workspaces'

I use fcpx on a 15" screen and am forever opening, closing, widening Windows to give me enough space.

Two configurable workspaces, one for editing clips and one for piecing together the final project would be fantastic.

I think in the case of Microsoft the days of EEE (Embrace, Extend and Extinguish) has gone given how much of a push they're putting on with Microsoft Edge and the standards they're working on or will be supporting soon:

https://dev.windows.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/platform/status/

The focus of Microsoft is to get people on their cloud and using Office 365 so it is no longer an issue of what you run given that all the heavy lifting is occurring in the Microsoft datacenters around the world. It'll be interesting to see what happens going forward but it appears that they've realised that they cannot rely on OEM's selling new computers, they need to actually convince end users to upgrade their operating system even if it means giving away their operating system. The result has been a marked improvement in the equality, they've embraced the rolling release and fast release cycle a whole lot better than Apple that seems to be limping along and struggling to fix even some of the most well documented issues that people talk about on this forum so often. Windows 10 has its issues but I can't help but get the feeling that Microsoft actually gives a crap where as with Apple it seems to be: "Is it iOS? no? then tell the end user to sod off".

I have to admit that MS is doing better in taking care of people; HOWEVER, since the release of window 10 with behind the scene spying capability...I can't give full credit to them. Tim failed to take care of computer people...and that's a problem.

The whole 'Windows 10 spies on me' is a load of crap started by a few paranoid fanboys who think that their telemetric data is 'oh so secret' (but of course these same idiots then whine that what they consider important isn't being addressed by Microsoft - unable to see the irony about not giving Microsoft telemetric data to Microsoft so then Microsoft can work out what needs to be focused on in the next development cycle). As for Google, anonymous data metrics that allow them to provide advertisements that are based on the information you provide them - oh the horror! My only complaint is how utterly useless their technology is given that I'm a gay male and they keep trying to sell me Russia brides.

To quote Graham Chapman: "Well, she's got to come to terms with these things."

We can only hope that Apple has a big update planned to coincide with the release of the 2016 MP.

I'm see new rTB Display, nMP and a big feature bump to FCPX. This would be a part of the big song and dance come WWDC me thinks.

Thing is even adobe with this practice (you didn't mention by name...but they are masters at this lol) those 1 year paid updates had some umphhh to them usually. And even adobe did bug fixes pretty decent for about 6 months into that new product year. Its just after month 6 you know you were screwed. But we got those 6 months where we'd see at least 2-3 updates. It was something. The sub structure I will admit I hate.

Nothing is standing out from this year long wait except for new idevice support for me. Which to be honest should have been here shortly after advice (edit idevice) release since its not like the FCPX people not exactly not in the know about the release. Unless apple is reaching levels of interoffice security and information control that are insane anyway. Shhh...don't tell the FCPX programmers IPP is coming out. That means you especially Tom....we know you play golf with Bill on the FCP team 2 times a month.

Delay in 3rd party support...sure. Apple doesn't have to put the FCP team on 16 hour shifts every new vdslr/mirrorless or more dedicated video cam release from nikon, canon, etc to have support out the door ASAP. Devices are theirs though. If no one at apple is thinking weeks to before release that maybe someone would really like to plug in thier new IPP into their MBP or MP with FCP installed within a week after release....this possibility scares me tbh.

Only other eye catcher for me was better network drive support (SAN use performance increase). Again this should not eb something we wait a year for. Its 2016, this is not new tech that we aren't sure will be a flash in the pan. SAN and NAS is way of life for many. HAs been for years in fact.

For clarity, Avid makes (among other software) Media Composer, which is available by subscription as well as a perpetual license. Adobe Premiere is only available through a subscription model (had a horrible experience with this, all I will say).

I work on a TV drama hopefully going into Season 10 and we switched last season from FCP 7 (a workflow we had completely dialed in) to Avid Media Composer, software loved by editors who have only ever seriously used Media Composer. FCP X is great for single-user environments and I have really enjoyed using it on a music video, a couple shorts and some corporate video. I do have some concerns about how it works in shared environments as I have not experienced a practical workflow.

I was at the NAB unveiling of FCP X and, like many, was very disappointed. Since then there have been several good upgrades that truly gave me hope; I really enjoyed cutting in it. Now, however, I am concerned about the rate of development. Check out Richard Taylor's wish list for FCP X; he is bang on for what the software needs but unfortunately probably wildly optimistic for what it will get. I hope I am very wrong.

Yes....Adobe, Corel etc. all of them, but Adobe made it a standard. Sorry, I meant Adobe for Premiere. I was so upset thinking about subscription based software I mixed up the two... :)

I had to laugh, because you reminded me of the days as a young graphic artist waiting for an update. After six months, you knew you had to shell out some bucks for the next upgrade after a few anticipated minor updates after the release. Those were the days of trying to do things that the softwares could not do to produce. I remember spending long hours/nights digitizing logos before they had scanners...Man I feel old. ;)

Are you talking about the blocky mosaic effect?? - if so do you use an NVIDIA card by any chance?

Yes, that's the one. We tend to get it more on the newer Macbook Pros, which i believe use the NVIDIA discrete graphics, so that might be it. I could have sworn it has happened on our Retina 5K iMacs as well, which use AMD - have you found a fix or more info about this issue?

Sorry, your correct...Adobe and not Avid. Was upset when thinking again about subscription software...

Wow...that is probably the best list of what is needed in FCPX I have seen!!! I hope Apple takes notice of the list!!!

To add (unless I missed it) a quick favorite effects section to place common used effects so I don't have to scroll every time through everything to get to my commonly used effects and transitions. It might be there already, but have not found it.

Per this great info, would anybody have a relatively complex, high-motion 4K scene at least a few minutes long to run though this setting in Compressor cranking the variable settings like bit rate up to the available MAX and then dropping that file into iTunes and trying to play it on :apple:TV4? In other words, I'm looking for a "push the limits" test of a complex scene 4K render and how that then plays on :apple:TV4.

Obviously the computer running iTunes or the :apple:TV is going to downscale such a file to 1080p for playback but I'm curious if we can master 4K at 4K with a bit rate of up to 50 and Dolby Digital audio and have that play well on :apple:TV4 at 1080p. OR, for those of us who will want a native 4K file in the future, do we need to render a 4K master file for future use and an optimized 1080p file for present use?

If anyone has a good, complex, multi-minute, high-motion 4K scene, this would be a GREAT test of this new setting and the :apple:TV4's capabilities to play it back. I'm sure I'm not the only person that would like to know how a complex 4K file rendered this way plays back on the "4". Thanks in advance to anybody that might give it a try and report back.
