i wonder if they fixed the issue where exporting to compressor through FCP, and having it set up as quick cluster would fail. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1099

this bug is seriously retarded, and it's annoying having to create a self contained movie, before loading it in compressor to get it to process using qmaster.

You took the words out of my mouth!
None of the new features make this a must-buy for me but if they solved that issue, I would buy the upgrade instantly. I hate that I have to export into a separate file just so that I can use all of my 8 Cores! It´s rediculous. I would have saved me some money and bought a single-processor mac pro if I had known about that back then.

Let me know if you hear anything about it, nard!

But I´m not getting my hopes up. :(

I doubt it, that bug has been in there forever.

Called apple a few years ago, they told me it was not a bug but a unsupported feature.

Blu-ray authoring?

Ha... the day after I finally went to the HP workstation website and spent several hours.

You almost lost me this time, Apple.

Hanging in there a bit longer, and I guess I can finally quit griping and all the Blu-ray naysayers can finally ****.

You know who you are.

Geez. It'll be nice to be a fanboi again. It's been a long time.

:apple:

But where's Macs with Blu-Ray drives? I think BR support is mainly for Mac Pros with 3rd party BR player, but who knows?

Most people who need it (like me) already have the burner/drive.

But bto along with full support of playback in MacOS has to be right around the corner, finally.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

:apple:

OF COURSE you can!

Older versions of DVD Studio Pro could make HD DVDs, but they wouldn't be bound by HDCP, meaning unprotected, meaning you could watch them on your Mac.

Apple will have done the same thing with Blu-ray; now everyone can finally SHUT UP about being able to make Blu-ray movies on a Mac.

And if they didn't do that, that means they have licensed HDCP to BURN the movies, meaning viewing is only a few updates away. It's a win-win.

THE ARGUMENT IS FINALLY OVER.:D

Yes it is. And nowhere NEAR 2012, either. :p

Woooohoooooo!

Just got my Final Cut Studio upgrade (I had FCS 1 and skipped FCS 2).

Working through the install...but WOW, clocking in at 39GB total with all the content installed. Only requires 2GB without all the content files.

I will say that I am disappointed they did not include Shake...

Blu-Ray burning is not authoring. They just give you a way to burn an HD(Blu-Ray) encoded video to disc with a menu for small collaborations between people. Just like Adobe's Encore, there is not going to be a sub-$25K BD authoring system for a while, until Sony drops the royalty fees. I own a DVD/Blu-Ray authoring company and we use Sonic's Scenarist software for BD authoring and it costs $25-$30K for the software license. This is due to the expensive royalties needed for adding the AACS files to discs for replication purposes. Once that price goes down, then I am sure Apple will add this to DVD Studio Pro. Not before. Not worth the R&D and ROI right now, especially for consumer/prosumer level software like FCP Studio.

Well thank you for the FIRST valid explanation of why Blu-ray is a "bag of hurt" in over a hundred ridiculous rationalizations of all stripes and from all over the map.

That said and done, if Apple wanted to cut a deal with Sony for cheaper software licenses for Blu-ray on Macs, I'm sure they would be able to in short order, and have either done so or are close to doing so. Because in order to establish Blu-ray as a viable format, it would only be to Sony's advantage to having drives on every Mac and more people using them as opposed to downloading inferior quality films and videos.

I'm encouraged by this interim measure and for now, it fits my in-house and immediate delivery needs as I would go to a company like yours to author a commercial Blu-ray release anyway. Well, almost like yours (we do music videos and pilot TV shows).

So thanks again!

Shake wasn't discontinued it just isn't in Final Cut Studio anymore. You can still buy it separately.
Shake was never part of the the suite and in 2006 Apple ceased development on it and made the source code available for licensing. Even though it's been a dead product for three years it's still widely used and regarded as 'too cheap not to have' if you do FX work since it's only $499.

Avoid Academic!

Wow, education (individual) price for FCS is now $899...

Education (institution) price dropped to $299 though...

It's a rip off. Plus there's NO support for the academic version.

I bought the academic FCS 2. Now in this recession, my freelance income has dropped 90%!! I went from making thousands weekly to getting occasional work and going months without work. I regret not having bought the commercial version when I had more money.

I took the risk and bought the full version of Final Cut Studio 3 today anyway though. I have to remain competitive, and I can write it off, so oh well. I'll probably keep FCS2 on my laptop and FCS 3 on my desktop.

*sigh*

Apple allows you to install FCS on one desktop and one laptop, so you might as well upgrade both.

Can someone confirm that the package don´t contain any printed manuals (and there for is smaller and greener)?
I do like to have printed manuals, but I can see why they do this

Logic is now in many ways on par with the latest version of ProTools, and yet costs WAY less. From what I heard, the Logic 9 is supposed to be very stable as well (at least I hope it is).

It is *supposed* to be stable, but it is not. Has not ever been, although it has always been supposed to be. It is a MIDI sequencer, not an audio editor. Try to do serious audio work with it, and the thing collapses.

Compared to Pro Tools, that is, there's your benchmark for stability. (And I mean the big money HD with dedicated DSP cards, not the native solution that can be bought for a price of a single plugin.)

I just bought Upgrade from apple store today and there is no manual. Just a small box enough to hold the discs. That's it.

Personally that's fine by me. I've got manuals from Final Cut Pro 5.0 - FCS2. That's a lot of frickin' manuals and wasted paper as I've never opened them.

you can always find manuals online. and honestly, if ur buying FCS, u probably have some idea of what ur doing..:p

He he, true.
I know Final Cut and Compressor, but I haven´t started with Color. I do like to read manuals on the plane, and I can´t always use my laptop there.

Most definately

You only need the Serial Numbers. When you attempt to install the upgraded copy without other versions installed, it will ask for the previous version's Serial #.

that doesn't seem like very good protection. anyone can nag a serial number somewhere on the internet of the old version.
