that doesn't seem like very good protection. anyone can nag a serial number somewhere on the internet of the old version.

FCS 'phones home' so if you use a serial number being used by another computer you cannot install or use anything. My high school loaded FCS onto like 12 computers (I think they cloned the drive to get it to install) and you had to shut off the internet to use FCS or the apps would shut themselves down.

i heard that it only does that if the multiple copies are on the same network accessing the internet from the same point.

i just thought about it because of Apple has such a lock-down on so many of their products... i figured they would make it hard as hell to use the Upgrade version or anything like that.

so essentially it's only preventing buying one license for a whole editing lab... doesn't really prevent borrowing other people's copies.

Even better, buy an old copy really cheap, use that serial number and you are good to go with the upgrade package. No stealing or "borrowing" involved
Now you can even just buy an really old copy of FC (not studio) as the upgrade price is the same across the board

hmmm... that's clever!

I Drink Your MilkShake

Just got my Final Cut Studio upgrade (I had FCS 1 and skipped FCS 2).

Working through the install...but WOW, clocking in at 39GB total with all the content installed. Only requires 2GB without all the content files.

I will say that I am disappointed they did not include Shake...

Maybe it has something to do with the 'intel only' thing

I for one am glad I can AT LEAST still run shake 4 on my G5 if I wanted to.
Gives the Machine a reason to exist lol...

Unless I missed something (just looked over the pages very briefly), I'm surprised that there was no mention of the apps (especially Compressor) utilizing OpenCL in Snow Leopard. I would think that would have been a big announcement as there should be some huge gains in the video-based apps. Perhaps they're waiting to announce/update this until after SL is released.

read the whitepaper... it talks about GPU acceleration.

what i can't find is anything about multicore rendering before snow leopard is released. i'm starting to think my eight core MP is a waste of money for editing.

the reason I pulled the trigger on the new FCS is that you can continue to work while exporting through compressor. it's about time! i've wasted more than 10 hours in the last week exporting dailies and other things that couldn't be queued for an overnight export because FCP can't be used while exporting. the real question for me with the new studio, though, is will compressor finally be stable?
