It's great to see some fantastic features of Marco Arment's Instapaper brought over to iBooks. Good stuff.

Oh, no! Did Apple remove the ability to search books, the way Marco removed the ability to search the $4.99 version of Instapaper (then "restored" it as an additional in-app purchase)? :p

To toggle 'full-screen' mode on the iPhone, just tap the middle of the screen (if you tap toward the edges you may flip pages).
This mode removes the buttons, status bar and page numbers.

(Edit: you can go back to regular view mode by tapping at the top or bottom, too. Just keep away from the edges)

It should probably be more discoverable though.

It's probably gone the same place that my favourite font, Cochin, has. :(

I love everything else about this update. But I don't see how removing previously-available fonts is an improvement.

Exactly! Adding new fonts = great. But why take away the ones that were already there? Makes no sense!

Everything else is great, but this is a deal-breaker for me. Rolling back to old version. *sigh*

That's not new behavior, so I wasn't considering that to be full-screen. I was expecting full-screen to hide the small decorations that make it look like a faux book, just like on iPad. I realize they are hidden in night mode.

Solid update by Apple! iBooks seems much faster, don't know if they did some tweaking but I never had it fly so fast before on my 3GS.

Also, I don't know if this is new with this update or not but you can swipe your library to switch between Books and PDFs. A very welcome improvement. Kudos Apple. So much faster now! :)

Ah. Fair enough.
I hadn't used iBooks until recently, so I presumed that was the 'distraction-free' full-screen mode.

I'd like it if full screen mode got rid of the faux book styling and made better use of the screen size (in regular and night mode).

****ing finally! Aside from lower prices on many novels, the primary reason I'd been using the kindle app (and nook app) was because most of my reading, of fiction at least, is done at night. Regardless of time however, a darker background is easier on your eyes anyway.

Love the night mode! iBooks just really looks gorgeous. I would kill for a screen lock within that app that would let me lock to landscape, though. Or just let the iPhone lock to landscape whenever.

WTF no Comic Sans??

Still no Comic Sans. Comic Sans should be the ONLY font available. Everyone should read on Comic Sans!!

Wow, you would think by some of these comments Apple just released the cure for cancer. Don't get me wrong, this is perhaps the best iBooks release yet, but night reading and full-screen reading are 2 feature that are found on even the most simple eBook reading apps. It's a tragedy it took Apple almost 2 years to add some of the most basic eBook reading features.

Now all we need is iBooks to be able to actually use the full screen and not have 25% of the screen real-estate taken up by the margins. I guess they need to save these features for later so they can release them and have people marvel over such "novel" ideas.

Finally! I've been (impatiently) waiting for the night time setting. Not sure what took them so long. I almost always use the Kindle app because of that functionality but some books I only have on iBooks and I prefer the iBooks interface.

Still a ridiculous waste of screen real estate on the iPhone :(. I'll pass, which is a shame as I like the iPad version.

Were's the love for dyslexic people?

I sent them a feature request some time ago and requested some of these features however they didn't use any of the fonts from my recommendation.

I'd REALLY like to see some new fonts and background colors for dyslexic people. If they'd do this I'd truly be in paradise. You can't understand how hard it is for me to read using most fonts and background colors.

I'm not being a wiseass on this. What kind of fonts and background colors would benefit dyslexic people? I'm truly interested in this.

ft

Nevermind - I did a quick google search and had a few links that I'm gonna read through. I never really gave it a second thought that some fonts/colors would have any affect for dyslexic people.
