But the Apple Backup program does backup to an external HD if you want to. That is how I use it. Pretty useful. You don't HAVE to backup to an idisk.
But $100/yr (minus any discounts you can get) is a lot compared with the $20 I paid only once for the excellent SuperDuper! (which is free for full volume cloning). I've always strongly objected to Apple making something as important as backups to media that you own into a subscription service. Really, they should be giving it away to encourage more people to do backups!

[edit: maybe I'm wrong about the $100/yr "subscription" for Backup since some people here claim it still works after dropping .Mac]

My .Mac account expires in 60 something days, but what happens to your account if you don't renew it straight away? Does it save the email address until you do renew it, or as soon as the renewal date is up, it allows anyone to register that email address?
I dropped .Mac about 18(?) months ago and my member account name is still reserved, which I discovered today when visiting the updated site and was offered to renew it. Not positive how it's associating that member name with this computer except I do still have it configured under .Mac in System Preferences and it's still used for iTMS.

When I had .Mac it bothered me that the iChat username had to be the primary account name (and mail address) instead of designating an alias to be used instead (making it possible to separately handle any mail sent to it). Looks like the new Groups service has the same restriction. I never want my mail addresses associated with any service except mail. Why make them more vulnerable to spam than they already are?

That issue, the yearly backup "subscription fee", and a poorly handled customer service incident were I didn't renew .Mac aside from it being overpriced. Still, it may eventually be worthwhile for my wife and will suggest she sign up for a trial once she's ramped up her skills to manage it with minimal support from me.

Yeah, its crazy = i bet with all the money we could save on eating out, every american could own a powerbook, ipod nano, and a family subscription to .mac!

I just saw the latest report that said 2/3rds of american are obese.

We need leptopin - $153 per bottle - we can afford it can't we?

That's $US80, even worse!

From a (slightly overweight) Aussie.

We're also using a iDisk for a small workgroup instead of a full feature file server, and for this purpose i found it to be quite a nice solution.
That's one of those features that the "but I can get more space cheaper elsewhere" contingent just don't get. That feature alone is well worth the subscription fee, it's so much training and hand holding I no longer need to do.

FastMail?

Yes, FastMail seems to be something to compare:
- 2GB (mail and dav) storage for 40$/year, 1 GB bandwith/month

compared to .mac
- 1GB (mail and dav) storage for 100$/year, 10 GB bandwith/month

Apart from the obvious differences, I personally found FastMail (full account for over a year) to be the finest e-mail provider around anywhere. I actually run my primary e-mail on such an account :)

For storage however, I prefer .mac because the ease-of-use is unmatched, at least on a Mac.

Havent tried out the new Backup so far, seems to be a nice upgrade...

I was curious if FastMail is the provider dubbz mentioned.

That sure makes FM's monthly bandwidth seem particularly low.

Btw, does .Mac have any bandwidth monitoring?

I had a FM Enhanced account for two years and didn't renew it last year, letting it fall back to a Member account. Now I have administrative access to my primary mail server, which is both free and more reliable. I still consider FastMail to be the among the best mail providers and especially recommend it to anyone looking for an IMAP provider. Still, I was disappointed when they didn't implement (and still haven't) certain important features that I'd requested multiple times over several years, especially more thorough account activity statistics. I wasn't particularly fond of the risk of messages intended for me being silently rejected by their server block lists, which did happen once because of a configuration error that I indirectly discovered later. I felt an Enhanced account deserved more sophisticated features like, not just higher quotas. But enough about my experience with FastMail.

For storage however, I prefer .mac because the ease-of-use is unmatched, at least on a Mac.
Have you tried FM's WebDAV service for file access? I haven't bothered since the storage/transfer limits for my account are now too low to make that worthwhile.

Who the hell spends $80 a week at McDonald's??? That's sick.
Last time I was back home, a Bic Mac set was like $5 or $6. Either way it's 13~15 times a week. People who spend that much time there need to learn how to cook at home.

I hope that was an example ...

Yeah but that's pizza- a lot more healthy than McD's.

Pizza over here in Japan is expensive, too. 1 medium is like $18

I agree!

You're right; it's not worth it. I was willing to try paying for it the first year; then I reluctantly paid for it a second year... I paid for it the third year for the antivirus and iDisk "ease of use." What did I get this past year? A raft of headaches with iSync, antivirus dropped by Apple, and a serious outtage in which I might have lost all my files if I hadn't backed them up to external HD -- and then, as compensation, Apple increased my storage space to 1 GB. Why would I trust them with 1 GB of my stuff if I can't trust them with 250 MB? And the .mac e-mail account? Don't get me started! My mac.com e-mail address gets the most junk mail of any address I've ever used. Apple obviously has none of the anti-spam and anti-virus controls in place that most other providers have established long ago. Steve Jobs said they couldn't continue to offer iTools free of charge-- that they'd lose money if they did. Well, I predict that .mac will soon be defunct even though they *do* charge for it. It's just getting to the point of: who needs it?

And what ever happened to those special .mac widgets that were "coming soon" for a while and then were dropped before they even appeared? Apple shouldn't make empty promises.

I know im going to get alot of crap for this, but honestly come on people. .mac has to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen. its right up there with paying for a hotmail account or aol. I like apple and all.. but come on. If you want to post messeges, us a msg board or email, if you want to back up stuff, use an external HD (its cheaper and you have controll of the hardware the data is stored at as well as the security that goes with it), antivirus.. lol, so the sync thing is kinda neat. but not worth _that_ much, set up a network or something. Its only for newbs who have no idea whats good for them.

sorry to everyone i offended who has it.. im just irrated. fire away

</rant>

EDIT: dont be THAT guy and give me spell critiques as a way to fire me down... i know they are there and i dont give a ****

Apple must be making money or they wouldn't have provided this major update. Hopefully more will follow.

Having just bought a powerbook I have also signed up for the .mac free trial. I have been messing around with it and I kind of like it and figure I can try it for a year to see if it is worth it. On Amazon they are selling it for $77. Is it the newest version with the 1 gig? At Amazon it said it is 3.0. Is this the newest version?

It doesn't matter, if the Amazon box is old. They'll give you the code, to renew your membership in the box. Any features that are added are given to all members. Amazon does have a good price. I always get it there too.

Only getting 512mb for my iDisk

If I go to the prefpane for .mac now I'm only seeing 512 MB on the scale, not 1GB... it's stayed this way after several reboots and I'm wondering why. What do others see here since the upgrade?

It's doing this on more than one machine that I connect to .mac with.

Just let my .mac account expire and took my $100 and ... actually I didn't take my $100. Really, my girlfriend took it. oh well ... At least I thought about my $100 for one afternoon.

The 1GB is your combined iDisk and email space. By default, 512MB is allocated to each. To change this, you need to go to your account preferences on the .Mac website.
