new-gen base model 13" vs the "best" of the last-gen

Hi, I am deciding to get my first mac laptop, in particular, MBA 13". I have a pretty tight budget here, and would like to know whether i should get the base 13" model with 256gb which costs $1499 or Refurbished 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 with 256gb from the last generation for $1199?

PS: primarily use computer to do homework, run some simulations and experiments like R and Matlab.

You should get the new one, since the difference is only $200 once you factor in the Education $100 promo.

FaceTime HD

slap in the face for those who said Apple is NOT holding FaceTime HD Camera for next version ...

Look what happened.

Next is 128GB SSD in $999 model, way to screw your loyal customers apple

Where are the posters here on MacRumors who INSISTED that Macs weren't going to get USB3?

As I previously predicted, USB3 will become the year's most significant across-the-board upgrade for the Mac product line (retina displays notwithstanding, which will be limited to a few models).

so they're never allowed to update anything because the buyers from the last gen might feel bad?

Availability on Amazon?

Anyone know when the new 13" Air will be available for sale on Amazon?

Did anyone else notice the option to upgrade the display on the MacBook Pro?

"The 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with a 1,440-by-900-pixel LED-backlit, glossy display. You can also choose a high-resolution, 1,680-by-1,050 glossy or anti-glare display that gives you 36 per cent more pixels."

i can't see the reason to get a mbp 13" anymore. the resolution is lower than mba 13"

even though the pricing is the same. i can't justify slightly higher computing power over portability

I'm glad to see these finally get an update. Though I was hoping for the [not so] SuperDrive being done away with across the line.

I'm in the market for a MacBook Pro. All I need is a stripped down MacBook Pro that is more capable than an iPad and more powerful than a MacBook Air but not having the horsepower I all ready get in my iMac.

It looks like I may have to make the hard choice between sticking with my old G4 notebook, a base 13-inch MacBook Pro, or the base 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Me and my first world problems, oh my!

I'm glad they retained the wedge design for the MBA only. New MBP looks awesome for power v size. Another good looking high end laptop. Bit pricey though

Very bad sign

MacRumors says "Pricing remains the same" for MacBook Pros, but that's not a universal truth. Unfortunately, prices on all models in Europe see a price increase of 100 euros each (and 200 € for the basic MacPro).

The cheapest MacBook Pro was at 1.149 €, now at 1.249 €.

A very bad signal in a time where the old continent is badly hit by recession and crisis. Honestly, Apple, price increases now?
So, the world's richest company needs even more billions dollars in the bank ... and less poor consumers.

I'm glad they did too, keeping the original designs for the Airs and the Pros gives each their own identities. There's no mistaking a Pro for an Air.

After reading up on all the MacBook news I missed today, I am so glad I didn't wait to get my MacBook Pro 4 months ago. The 13" got the shaft again with no retina display. Sure the slightly faster processor and USB 3.0 ports are nice, but not much else. I'll stick with my 2011 model and see what happens in a couple years. I refuse to get a 15" laptop, I think they are too big at that point. 13" is perfect.

The European price increase is not necessarily Apple being greedy or sticking it to the Europeans. I'm guessing that it's directly tied to the recession you mention and all the volatility that has come with it.

What it boils down to is that the Euro is now worth much less compared to the US dollar than it was just a year ago. The eur.usd exchange rate was $1.45 about a year ago, now it's hovering around $1.25, a decrease of 14%.

Apple is a US company operating based on the U.S. dollar, so if they kept the European price the same, they'd be in essence losing 14% on all Euro-denominated sales compared to last year since 1 € would yield Apple only $1.25 vs $1.45 this time last year.

Based on your example of the lowest end config, Apple has increased the price no more than 9% of last year's price (1149 € to 1249 €), which is less than the decrease of the Euro against the dollar.

I'm definitely hoping the Euro zone is able to sort things out so you guys can enjoy the lower prices again. :apple:

Is anyone else intrigued by the Air with a 512gb drive? I know it's crazy expensive, but money is the only thing in the way of what I would describe as my perfect computer (MPA 13, 512gb sd, 8gb ram). Before it wasn't possible. Now it is, but I sure wish SD storage costs would come down.

problem is, by that point, you're just about paying for a retina MBP.

This may seems like a sound financial reasoning, but there's a major flaw. When people are broke, the cheapest MacBook looks now more beyond reach than ever, particularly compared to other PC notebooks. The financial compensation that you're mentioning will be largely neutralized by falling sales, especially among new adopters.

Add to that the loss of features, such as ethernet, superdrive and ability to upgrade RAM, with these new models, Apple is screaming : go away people, we only want the rich guys who can afford the most expensive models.

I'm not sure Steve would have endorsed such a drastic marketing and philosophic turn.

Well I'm glad my late '08 MBP still looks like the brand new macs! Means I get to keep this beast for another year at least!
