cableshark.com let me know that the MDP male to HDMI male cable that supports audio will be ready in 2 weeks. The cable they have now doesn't carry audio.

Please if someone knows where I can find a male to male cable right away, post here.

If you mean this one: <image>

it only supports video. I emailed monoprice support about it over the weekend b/c I wasn't getting audio out either. They said it doesn't support VESA 1.1 which is required for audio out. Griffin makes a similar product that is VESA 1.1 compliant and does have audio out. I just order one from a company on Amazon.

I emailed monoprice about this, as well. They said audio support for the MBP is not known at this time.

I pointed out that the monoprice packaging specifically states that the adaptor supports DisplayPort 1.1a ...

People with adapters (hopefully monoprice adapters) try this out:

"... we had to activate display mirroring in system preferences, but once we did we still didn't have any audio. We had to make sure to also hit the audio settings and select the Samsung HDTV source for output..."

from a cnet review of the audio/video

interesting ... when I get home I'll try first mirroring the displays and then check Sound preferences.

Maybe mirroring makes a difference??

I was told "...our cables are 1.1 VESA compliant and do not support audio. You need a 1.2 VESA compliant cable in order to pass audio. We currently do not carry any 1.2 VESA compliant cables" by monoprice.

Has anybody had success at least with the video going through their receiver? I have a yamaha receiver, and when I plugged the mini-display to hdmi cable into it, I couldn't even get the video to work.

It would be great if I could run one cable into my receiver and have that work, but I am thinking I might have to plug the mini-display to hdmi cable into my TV and then the mini-toslink to toslink cable into my receiver.

Oh great, more confusion. This isn't correct.

Apple says "adapters that conform to the VESA v1.1a" are required to pass audio signal.

Photos of HDMI adapter

I picked up this adapter in the street market of Hong Kong this past weekend. Thought you would all be interested to see that it is already being made.

We're interested in the testing, not pictures. Is it working? Does it pass audio?

I didn't think to look at Display Preferences. Maybe the Display settings are detecting my TV as a monitor instead of a TV (1080p), and it must be set to TV output in order to enable audio pass-through. Another thing to try ...

Has someone tested this yet with either the MonoPrice or Dr Bott adaptors (or any other type, for that matter)? It'd be great to know which ones work this way and which ones don't.

Over on AI, the consensus is that the current Monoprice mini-DP to HDMI cables don't pass audio through, despite what their techs may be telling customers. Caveat emptor.

Will test when I get home tonight. I will cross my fingers. I only purchased this because of the claims from the technicians.

DTS-HD, TrueHD mini-display port to HDMI Griffen

Hi all,

I've got the 17" MBP i7-620M GeForce GT 330M w/8 GB (Mid 2010)

I'm attempting to bitstream Blu-ray HD Audio (DTS-HD & TrueHD) via the MDP-HDMI adapter in Win7 with Boot Camp 3.1. When I plug in the adapter and power on my Denon AVR, the Nvidia HDMI driver kicks in. After configuring the basics, it would appear that the Cirrus logic chip (CS4206a) is controlling the PAVP (Protected Audio Video Path) in Intel's on-board HD Audio. It doesn't seem that the Nvidia driver is able to recognize the PAVP. I modded the latest Nvidia driver 197.16 and successfully installed it along with the latest HD audio driver, however it doesn't make any difference.

Given the HM55 chipset along with the i7-620M with on-board HD Video & Audio the PAVP is incorporated which should allow bitstreamming.

Anyone know the specifics on the audio paths? It would be a shame if Apple hasn't utilized the PAVP properties.

Any ideas out there?

Hi

Have you tried to play a Blu-ray rip with DTS-HD, DTS-MA or TrueHD in OS X to check if it will pass it through to the receiver?

I would be really interested in knowing if it works!

Thanks :)

On a related note... I'd be very interested to know if, at some point in the future, or even now, the new MDP audio supports 8 channel LPCM. I have an excellent cinema amp (10 channel/170W per ch). It will accept LPCM, but it's a touch too old to decode the new HD audio formats.

Am waiting on a Mac Mini refresh which will hopefully bring the new MDP with audio support, and so also hope for the above as it will make a wonderful HTPC. Plex FTW!

I have this exact same adapter. I bought it from ebay last year for my June 2009 macbook pro I purchased. It works perfectly on my LCD, but I had to buy a separate adapter to receive sound. It works perfect, sucks to know that a year later the macbooks got updated so the sound can be received just from the adapter:mad:

Only problem is that none of the available os x players currently support DTS-HD or TrueHD.

Running Windows 7 with Boot Camp couldn't be easier and today I tried both parallels & VMWare Fusion and Boot Camp gave the best "most native" performance out of the three. Only problem is that the Boot Camp drivers don't support the on-board graphics chip & audio chip where the PAVP resides to enable bitstreamming.

English please...

I'm VERY interested in this.
I'm going to be installing Windows 7 on my 13" MBP and was worried about the drivers too.
What does this mean?? Sorry not good with the "PAVP" and "Bitstreaming".

No worries ... so PAVP "Protected Audio Video Path" which is the technology used to protect the data (audio & video) path within a computer during playback (e.g. Blu-ray discs). In other words you cannot send loss-less audio (DTS-HD & TrueHD) to your receiver without it. These two audio formats are found on most Blu-ray discs and are superior in sound quality.

Bitstreamming in a nutshell is sending the loss-less audio out via HDMI from your computer to your AVR (Audio-Video Receiver). In the new MacBook Pro's you can now send audio out of the Mini-display port if you use the Griffen adapter Mini-display to hdmi found on Apple's website.

In theory if Apple has fully utilized the hardware with support in it's os & bootcamp drivers then the i7-620m with on-board video & audio would support the PAVP technology and bitstreamming would be possible. But at this time the bootcamp drivers are not utilizing the on-board audio & video so that Windows 7 is not seeing the PAVP and therefore is not able to bitstream the loss-less audio. The boot camp drivers only support the discrete graphics card (Nvidia GeForce GT 330M).

I wish that Nvidia would step up to the plate and incorporate PAP or PAVP into their GPU's so that we can get a more seamless integration. ATI on the other hand has things covered with their 5xxx card series. PAP is supported and these cards natively bitstream using playback software PowerDVD9 or 10 & Total Media Theater 3.
