Has anyone got this to work with the mono price cable? I tried and audio still comes from the mbp? Any settings that need changing?

I don't think you get it. People buy macs because the OS is better. Sure the Hardware is cool, and the support is great, but the real benefit to owning a Mac is that the OS doesn't suck. That's why they keep buying them and then complain that there isn't all the ports they want.

You are of course correct. I purchased my MBP 3 or 4 years with the intention of primarily running Windows and made the mistake of playing around with OSX for a couple of days :). As a long time Unix admin I have not looked back. I now have a windows VM because I still have a need for Visio occasionally (Although I prefer Omni Graffe overall) and I had bootcamp to play Civ IV for a while, but would probably just buy the OSX version if I wanted to go back to playing it.

I doubt if either of those tactics would be legal. (At least, coming into the US, the first would be illegal and there is no exclusion for "gifts".)

Perfectly legal in NZ and Australia, as far as I know also Repub-O-Ireland. There is also no GST for items declared under $500.

But, the value you declare is the money you get from insurance if the parcel is lost or damaged.

Did you try system preferences -> Sound -> Output tab to see if you have other output options besides the speakers when you connect the HDMI cable and turn on your TV?

I have the new 13" MBP and the HDMI adaptor from monoprice came in the mail today ...

I'm afraid to say that audio does not seem to work.

I checked. No other options for sound output with the TV connected.

Hmm, if this is the case, that is very misleading information from Monoprice. You should contact them about this.

I ordered a MDP male to HDMI male from cableshark.com. They were very correct and told me that they're going to test the cable on new MBPs before shipping.

Their cable is 1.1a, but also monoprice's is and apparently seems not to work.

So what's the issue here?

The thing is Monoprice says their adapters should work, so it should be 1.1a. We'll just have to wait and see until someone tries a different adapter.

Has anyone so far worked this out? monoprice or other?

If yes, how? :)

Since I havn't been able to find a european dealer. So guess i'll wait untill they get available in the EU..

I have the monoprice cable as well, doesn't work with sound :( I checked the sound output setting and nothing comes up. I haven't tested it with windows 7 yet, trying my hardest to avoid installing :)

I really don't want to go out and buy another cable.

Wrong. GST and customs fees are due and payable for mail order and Internet purchases in all three of those countries. Misrepresenting the item as a gift is illegal, both for the customer and especially for the business, which can be faced with heavy fines, importation bans, and fraud charges if caught. The waiver in NZ for personal imports is NZ$50, not 500.

You can check your own Customs Service website. I don't know where you get your crazy-ass ideas about legal issues from, but it's entirely wrong.

Wrong. He was right (at least about Australia :p)

Edit: About the $500, not the gift thing, unless it is a legit gift.
I think it's actually AU$1000 in your case, but in any event my issue was with his decree of the legality of fraud and lying to customs. I made no comment about the waiver limit in any country but New Zealand, which will obviously vary.

It's still not working for me either.

it only supports video. I emailed monoprice support about it over the weekend b/c I wasn't getting audio out either. They said it doesn't support VESA 1.1 which is required for audio out. Griffin makes a similar product that is VESA 1.1 compliant and does have audio out. I just order one from a company on Amazon.

I believe most of us are talking about this mini-disply port to hdmi cable from monoprice

The other issue I am having is that not even the video works when I plug it into my Yamaha receiver. If that continues to be an issue, I'll have to order a toslink cable to get the audio to my receiver and use the mini display port to hdmi to get the video to my LCD tv.

by Dr. Bott

$29.00
9180-MDHK
The Dr. Bott Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter is designed to connect your flat panel display or LCD-TV with HDMI-Port to a computer equipped with a Mini DisplayPort.

Audio output supported via the mini DisplayPort on Macbook Pro laptops released in April 2010.

Any takers out there want to try it out?

People with adapters (hopefully monoprice adapters) try this out:

"We connected the Core i7 15-inch MacBook Pro directly to our CNET Lab Samsung LCD HDTV; nothing fancy. It wasn't effortless: we had to activate display mirroring in system preferences, but once we did we still didn't have any audio. We had to make sure to also hit the audio settings and select the Samsung HDTV source for output. Once we did, we couldn't control volume through the MacBook Pro anymore, but the TV remote control raised and lowered volume perfectly fine."
