Horrifying to see that android still lacks pro apps, especially stock

Nothing to paliate this lack of fully featured apps such as those mentioned in the article, or a solid note taking app, reminders , video editing, music creation,freeform...

There are a number of good (including "free") options available for Android. Some are specifically offered by Google such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, Keep, Tasks, etc.

I get that joke, and laugh with you. However, Pages in the often overlooked Page Layout Mode is quite a great DTP app that seems- IMO- to be just about the perfect mix of power & simplicity. I've sold some clients on buying Macs mostly to use Pages in Page Layout mode.

But bigger question: did I miss the arrival of Sonoma?
I don’t disagree, I mean Apple suite is nice and great, for very few limited scenarios.

It’s a pity as we all know Apple could strike a major software there if they wanted.

Hate is the currency of the internet. In many cases, it’s just because that’s one of the main ways it can be assured they will receive messages from others. :)
I guess I'm a jerk for highlighting it or pointing it out to the haters, it just seems weird to throw shade on something that is actually free! It's not like they are jamming a U2 album down your throat, right?

I am surprised apple has continued to fund this effort. Pages, numbers, and keynote just need to die
I am surprised by this comment: following that logic, Apple should have discontinued the Mac a few decades ago…

I use Keynote and Pages daily, and Numbers a few times a week. My employer pays for a pro license for MSOffice, but I find iWorks more powerful and easy to work with. The IT department wants everyone to switch to an all Microsoft environment, but for some reason, I'm always asked to create Keynote presentations and Pages documents because they like them better…

The fact that iWorks comes free on your Mac is a major advantage for everyone, also!

I'm so glad Apple still update these apps. I'll take or leave Pages and Numbers, but Keynote is hands down my favourite thing about macOS. It absolutely blows PowerPoint out of the water.

I work as a freelance speaker, and Keynote makes that work a total joy. 9/10 times I give a talk, at leat one person asks me 'how do you make slides like that?'. I'd genuinely be sad if Apple ever stopped supporting Keynote. I love making my slides as much as I love presenting them to an audience.

Side note: when I was 14 I washed dishes in my local cafe on a weekend (for £3/hour, yay!). I saved and saved and saved bought my first Mac with that money (I was 15 by the time I'd saved up). Back then, they called Keynote-Pages-Numbers 'iWork' and had a dedicated section on the Apple website for it. They had this list of 'how to' videos for each app and I swear, I watched those things on repeat for months in the run up to me having enough to buy a Mac. And so I felt like I already know the ins and outs of iWork on day 1. One of the first things I did when I switched on my new Mac (it was OS X Leopard back then) was make a load of shapes in Keynote and Magic Move them. I was totally blown away, I couldn't believe you could animate things so easily. I turned 30 this year and still feel a little bit like my 15 year old self when I make a really snazzy Magic Move transition from one slide to another. That's the 'Mac joy', I think, something which I think is rare in software. It really does feel like magic. Thanks, Keynote.

I don't know why people throw so much hate on these apps, at least they are free of any subscription fee. I'll take that any day.
Maybe because they were “downgraded” to achieve compatibility with their iOS counterparts. Had they been introduced like new apps, I’d bet the story would be different.

That, and people are an absolute delight in the internet these days 😅

This has long been the nature of people, even before the Internet came along (although the Internet has helped amplify it). Many simply feel it's more productive or worthwhile to "criticize" than "praise." If a product or service is good, that's kind of to be expected so they’re less likely to say anything. If they feel it’s bad or has issues, watch out!

I wonder how many Mac (or IPhone, iPad) buyers actually find it a "major" advantage i.e., what percentages of customers mostly or strictly use Pages, Keynote and Numbers on their Apple devices?

Still no ability to have multiple tabbed documents open in a single window in Pages on iPad.
But, hey, at least you can throw a Sticker on that page. /s

That is a good question.

I mostly use Pages and Numbers (and sometimes Word and Excel) and exclusively use Keynote for presentations. I could name a few people around me using "mostly or strictly use" iWork, but this anecdotic information would note really answer you question.

On another level, though, I wonder if word processing softwares like Word or Pages will exist in the future: most young people never use them, even to write texts, and don't have a clue about what they really can do.

They are free, use them or don't. I am never touching MS products again once I retire.

Almost everything I work with from Microsoft is sub standard. I live in Azure all day at work, use OneNote, Outlook, World, Excel and Powerpoint. They are so utterly bloated and if on the M/O365 versions they constantly get updated with new UI stuff that drives our support center mad because everyone is on a different version and you can downgrade or force upgrade specific users, you get the update when you get it.

I have used iWorks and for personal use it is a great set of apps.

Once again forcing an OS upgrade just to continue using Collabaration. requires MacOS 13 or greater just to continue using that feature yet we have some machines that cannot run Ventura. F apple.
Collaboration is now broken on macOS 12 Monterey because with today‘s update of iWork 13.2 needs macOS 13 Ventura and higher?

Not at all, just the way things are. It is indeed weird but it’s human nature!

Nah, folks that hate these apps are going to hate them regardless. The fact that they even still exist after folks stopped liking the app is part of what they’re upset about. There are millions every year that may only use them once or twice, but they were there when they needed them, zero friction and work like the other iOS/iPad apps they use (given the sales of all three platforms, there’s more people being introduced to these apps on non-macOS systems).

Pages is good and getting better at creating ebooks. (I wonder if it can create books with USDZ’s?) I wish iBooks Publisher was still around but, as a macOS only app in a growing iPadOS and iOS world, it didn’t really fit into Apple’s vision.
