Aww... I liked playing with the reel thing. :D

Well you don't know JACK about DESIGN, maaaan! People like you are what is holding Apple back from INNOVATION!

I hope they get rid of fonts in iOS 7. Alphabets, man? Come on! I see letters printed on REAL OBJECTS, man! That's so lame! We need something new! Enough with this skeuomorphic oppression!

Oh by the way I was being sarcastic

Uh oh.. just updated and now there's a red number circle on the Podcast app icon on my desktop that looks odd.. it says "1,158". I certainly have not downloaded a thousand podcasts, but it looks like the app is adding up the total number of podcasts on all my subscriptions and showing them on the app's icon as if I had that many new emails or phone messages. That's kind of annoying and unnecessary.

When I subscribe to a new podcast on my iPhone using the updated podcast app it doesn't cause that podcast to be added to my Itunes. Shouldn't it do this if it is using iCloud to sync across devices?

Downcast

Does anyone know if Downcast is close to an app for the Mac? This may just be enough to drive me back to the Podcast app/iTunes combination. How about playing the audio only in the background from a video podcast? Thanks in advance!

I don't understand...

My iPhone and iPad have been happily syncing subscriptions, play counts and playback position since last year.

What doesn't sync to iCloud at all is iTunes.

So what exactly is the app update fixing there then? The only thing the release notes say is that playlists and the new custom stations are now syncing.

Its just showing all podcasts that is has marked as unplayed.

Yeah, that's what I figured but it's not just showing podcasts I've downloaded.. it's counting ALL podcasts from all my subscriptions, even those I haven't downloaded. And why even show something like that? It's not like a podcast is an urgent message that needs to be dealt with. Seeing a number like 1000+ slapped on top of my app icon is absurd. This is kind of discouraging to subscriptions. I'll probably unsubscribe to everything and just manually check podcasts when I'm in the mood.

If I can have podcasts update by subscription in the background, how come Apple doesn't allow us to have apps just automatically update in the background? I know sometimes an app update comes out that breaks an app or you don't want the update for another reason, but could iTunes be somehow set up to allow you to "revert" to an older version manually. Seems like that would be easier to handle than always having to manually update apps.

I know this is off topic but was just setting up podcast subscriptions and this thought hit me.

So, is now syncing podcasts with iTunes on a Mac, via iCloud?

No. As far as I can tell nothing has changed regarding iCloud sync. It syncs with other iOS devices, like before. iTunes doesn't sync podcasts to iCloud, like before.

The only difference is that the new "My Stations" playlists are synced, too.

Seems like MacRumors is reading something into the release notes that simply isn't there.

You can turn this off under settings....notifications.....then select the podcasts app and turn off "badge app icon". Then you don't get the huge number showing up. I did the same with emails.....don't need to see the number....I always know I have unread emails.

You can also change the default number of episodes to save....so you don't get an unlimited number of podcasts building up on your device.

Unless this also stops the Music App from taking over when I press play on my headphones, it is pointless, and I want my Podcasts back in the Music App, where they belong.

Thank you!

Huge improvement in responsiveness. Maybe because I am using a iPhone 3GS, but they old version took ages to start and would sometimes lag between screens. New version is much better. Finally the podcast position now reliably sync's between devices as well.

Looks great!

I use the Podcast app nearly every day and this is really what the app shoulda been like at launch

glad they got rid of the skeuomorphism too.

Simple, clear controls, all one one screen. Really no wasted space.

Glad Ive is on board

I think with Ive on board it's going to help "chip away at the unnecessary" and focus on a clean and intuitive design. If this update is any indication of future changes I'm on board.
