I'm actually not a fan of Apple's fondness for tiny icons serving as buttons -- I don't like the Music app interface in that regard, though it's better than in iOS 5. I think in terms of UX the former big rounded squares help users to focus easily on the button area. This is where the tension in design of form vs function plays out. I would've been fine with just flattening those push-buttons and taking out the ridiculous reel-to-reel. But, overall it's still a much better app than what we had before.

About... friggin'... time on the iCloud syncing.

To tell the truth though, I thought the reel-to-reel skeumorphism was kind of charming. My secret shame! :(

It's not the "skeumorphism," that just makes it look like something people recognize. I think its fine with Calendar and Address Book. It's the fact that the tape recorder didn't really do anything but turn. So get rid of it.

exactly, Apple should have made the tape reel get twisted from time to time so it would be realistic.

oh the good old days....LOL

I switched to Downcast when podcasts were first taken out of the music/ipod app and into the first version of the podcasts app. I have to say I absolutely love it. I might give the native apple podcasts app a look at some point again, but don't really see any reason to at the moment.

Sometimes using the native apps has it's benefits, but I don't see any reason to as of now. If anyone has a reason to, please list them as I may just be missing out on what makes the native podcasts app worth it.

So this update, after updating my library for aout 15 minutes, just brought back 100 episodes of podcasts I already listened too....good job Apple! Now I get the pleasure of removing them all again, thanks for the extra work.

How do you get the oldest first?

I can't figure out how to get a "Playlist / Station" to sort by oldest. My only options are "My Podcast Order, Most Recent, or Manual". What am I missing?

Not quite true. You can import your own videos from your computer into the video app, and they will play so long as its in a format that iOS natively supports.

or jailbreak or use HDPlayerPro to play ANY video file hehehe

i use HDPlayerPro to play MKV's. i'm glad i didn't upgrade to the latest revision of HDPlayerPro, b/c due to the copyright issue with Dolby they eliminated the AC3 codec from the app (what most MKV audio is). so currently i can play any video file on my iPad. i transfer video files via the App tab in iTunes

There are apps on the App Store (e.g. http://appshopper.com/entertainment/avplayerhd) that plays back a lot of video formats. Jailbreaking is not needed for this.

Playlists created in iTunes now sync with the Podcasts app, and a bug has been fixed that prevented playback from resuming correctly after exiting the app.

I understand that Apple's software group had bigger fish to fry (Maps) but it's unbelievable that these two issues weren't found before initial release. Jeez.

Apple has done away with the skeuomorphic push-buttons and removed the reel-to-reel player hidden underneath the image for finer controls.

I secretly despised everything about the whole reel-to-reel thing. Never complained because it was hidden and, well, you're only as big as the things that bother you.

But the biggest thing that I missed in the old basic view was the lack of a progress indicator. The new version has it, and I'm glad.

And while we're on the subject of skeuomorphism, which may or may not mean "textures" and "shading" depending on if you're a graphic designer or not, I noticed that the navigation buttons are slightly flatter, with less of a convex gradient effect. Overall I like that.

It would be nice if Apple made it more intuitive to add podcasts that aren't found in iTunes Store. Especially ones that require a user name and password to subscribe.

And may this continue...
Agreed! I've been complaining about the Podcast app since day one. The "reel to reel" graphic and other skeuomorph elements in general looked so tacky. I really couldn't believe something so tacky and ugly quite frankly, made it to the final app release.

Hopefully they continue this trend and remove all the skeuomorph boosh*t throughout iOS.

Finally!

Wow, it actually works. Finally!

I was just adding a few new podcasts to the old version of the app last night, it was a painful slow experience. Just scrolling through the lists was laggy. Now the app starts more quickly, scrolling is smooth, the playback UI is fixed.

The previous version always had the feel of it being some interns summer job project. At least now they got round to finishing it. If this is related to Ive taking over the UI design then long may he reign.

Oh wow, the updated looks horrible! They took away the great radio look of it and made it look like OSX Finder. If this is the new look of iOS, I HATE it!

Edit: Nevermind, you can still use the old look by going to 'Top Charts'. Thank god!

lol it looks way better. If you liked the old look you have the taste of samsung and microsoft.

Uh oh.. just updated and now there's a red number circle on the Podcast app icon on my desktop that looks odd.. it says "1,158". I certainly have not downloaded a thousand podcasts, but it looks like the app is adding up the total number of podcasts on all my subscriptions and showing them on the app's icon as if I had that many new emails or phone messages. That's kind of annoying and unnecessary.

Has anyone noticed that if you listen to video podcasts the image gets shifted

I'm seeing something similar in Flipbook with video playback, ever so often. Must be that the video decode API is wonky.

Apple could solve it quite well by calling it the "Audio" app instead of music.

iOS design is idiotic enough to store videos in "Photo" and the video app does not play video unless it's from iTunes.

Putting a podcast back into the music player makes more sense by comparison.

Agree, I dont want a seperate App for everything and fill my devices up.

I use the app all the daily. It had its little niggles but nothing that stopped me from using it.

Loving the new UI and the way everything is laid out. Its funny, you don't how awkward something was before until you're given a new version.

I think we will see updates to other non stock apple apps over the next few weeks. Just in time for iOS7 :)

Hope he redesigns the Music app. Its not too user friendly and i'd much rather see a bit of continuity.

Can't imagine it being anything close to downcast, best app I've ever bought
