There is absolutely nothing new or strange here. Location-based services and mobile advertising already can and do collect this information on the iPhone, and have done so for a long time. Apple with iAd is now doing what others do, and is including location information to enable locally-relevant advertising, which many people want. If you're not one of them, you can easily turn off location sharing and opt out of targeted advertising.

I always have a laugh when huge corporations justify the location targeted adds as... relevant to you…

No they are really not relevant to people, they a relevant to other corporations that want to sell you their products and make money off you.

And people are scared of google collecting information

Ah the mac forums. Where Flash is okay until Jobs says no. Where data collection is a crime against humanity until Jobs does it.
I'm sure there are more. I just woke up cornsarnit :p.

I am frekn sick of their policy changes...

I don't think they do anything else but play with the crap words lately...

noobs >_<

Hmm, apparently my 3GS running iOS 4 isn't running iOS 4, so I can't opt out of Stevie's electronic dog collar program.

F*** you Apple!

its funny, Apple talks a big game about letting people opt out. But then they have these so-called 'technical difficulties' wink wink.

I imagine that's the analytics data in iAds. Nothing majorly "ominous" really. The amount of Google Analytics data is arguably more scary, IMO.

GPS + Internet + touchscreen device + ad framework (iAd) + push notification framework + web search history all adds up to something a little more than analytics. Try location aware ads and notifications.

I don't mind so much about the "Privacy" issue. I trust Apple...even if something gets out...so what?...someone will know where I am for a few days until the leak is publicized? So? What I care about is that this must mean the GPS is active 24/7 (or almost). I know battery life is better on the iPhone 4, but on my 3GS, if I have Maps open, I can watch my battery drain (almost to the minute). So what's gonna happen with iAds constantly checking in?

Bad guys actually monitor stuff like facebook and such to know when and which house to break into... "none and no neighbors home" is like striking gold for them.

Actually it is fairly irrational.

What you are saying is you would rather pay MORE for everything you buy and use rather than be subjected to advertising. That is not only irrational it is fiscally irresponsible.

You must be the one with all the money if you are willing to pay significantly more for all those things that are subsidized or flat out payed for by advertising money. You must poop gold.

I want to hear more from the guy who writes "oh noes" and "payed."

I love this place.

If this were a similar article about Google, you'd have hundreds of people saying f*** Google, I'll never use their services again! Now that it's Apple, it's all, who cares if they know that you're going for coffee! I trust Apple completely!

Maybe I wrong, but it seems Apple makes it easier to opt out of this if you want. They are being upfront about what they are doing. We only find out months later that Google has been snooping on open wifi. The whole Google Buzz thing was a mess. No company is perfect and you should be careful with what you share, but I guess I trust Apple more because they are being upfront...

Except none of that is the case. Location information is used for location-based services. Disable the services, either systemwide or on a per-app basis, and problem solved.

No, problem not solved. Location services are useful, IF the user gets to choose who has access to such location information and when. Geotagging pictures or voice recordings comes to mind.

This is not on a per-app basis. Maybe I want to use location services in an app, but if now that app has iAd, Apple gets to also use that location info and sell it to undisclosed partners. So I can either not use the app at all or use it and be stuck disclosing my information.

Opt-out through a cookie is not good. It should be that the people that don't give a damn about their privacy should be able to opt-in and get these "wonderful" targeted ads. I don't click ads, nor do I care for ads, and much less targeted ones.

I have nothing to hide, but that doesn't mean that I want anyone knowing my business.

I still don't understand why everyone is so worried about their location being collected. No one seems to mind that if you are in trouble or if you lose your phone this same process helps you get found or find your phone.

Stop worrying!!

News Flash: Activate Location based-services, pay $99 for 1 year of MobileMe so you can get to use "find my iphone." You will also get location based iAds!!!

While Google services are free...

Whether it's Apple, Google or a developer, it's all about making more money by selling ads.

As others have pointed out, it's too bad that we get to pay for the extra bandwidth used to send them. Without an unlimited data plan, that's like paying for unwanted text messages.

--

Note that current and past iPhone Software Licenses included a clause that allowed Google to display realtime where each search request was located.

As for turning off location services, a user should always be able to specify that onboard location services should work, but that their location is private information to withhold from any external entitiy. A per-app option would be perfect.

Interesting thought : since almost every device uses A-GPS, the assistance servers themselves know a lot about device locations, if someone wanted to use that info.

"At Apple we're all about privacy, and that's why we're going to share your home address and everything you buy and everywhere you go with our advertising partners."

seriously, wtf?

How do i Opt out (yea right,) now?

It's not what, it's who. 911 service and my phone provider are people I know. Apple's undisclosed partners aren't. Let me choose who gets to know. But I forgot Apple never was about choice when it comes to iOS.

Every single app on the iPhone that accesses location information asks permission first, even all the built-in ones from Apple. On top of that, they have also added a new icon to the status bar to make it even more clear when a program is using these services.

Nobody is collecting information about your whereabouts without you knowing about it.

Yeah, because Apple just told us about it, and now EVERYBODY is collecting our information and we KNOW about it and we can't even opt out because of "technical difficulties."

These tech companies are part of a One World consortium - even Apple.

They track everything, steal anything, and store the relevant data forever.

These top guys at Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, PayPal, AT&T, etc., they don't see privacy as most US citizens do. To them it's a commodity to be sold to advertisers or to be quickly surrendered to governments, such as the US govt or Red China.

Think I'm being paranoid? Do some research and think again...

I used to believe in Apple as some sort of countercultural hero, especially with their famous 1984 commercial. But that's not true anymore. Now it's all about the Benjamins.

Apple is not "stalking" you. They honestly couldn't care any ****ing less about where you go or whatever. They're using it to drive the ad platform of iOS and make money, which is the end purpose of a corporation. Get the hell over yourselves.

Think about the millions of iPhones sold. Think of how many iPads were sold in just the American launch weekend. It all adds up to many people and many, many devices. Do you all seriously they think "Oh, MacRumors user Jetson with iPhone serial number YM9238JSUX9 watched The Office last night at 5 AM and then went and got pizza in Omaha! Let's use this information to takeover the world!"? No. They use the collective iAd platform to give you location aware ads. Now, if you are concerned about your privacy, lovely. That's why there's an off switch for Location services. Every phone I've ever had has had an off switch for it, including the iPhone.

And AGAIN the general opinion of the Mac community turns around like a leaf.

Collecting and selling user data for ads used to be evil and wrong when only Google was doing it, but now it's suddenly all right because Apple is doing the same thing.

I'm laughing my ass off! :D

I wouldn't expect anything else from a Mac forum, but this thread is split at least. The opportunists were swayed before by opposition to Google, not interest in privacy.

You start your discourse with the premise that Apple and whoever they choose to sell the data to should be able to know where and what I am doing.

I on the other hand have paid in full for a product and believe it is my right to only let the people of my choosing know where I am at any given time.

It is naive and simplistic of you to think that this is about where you ate your pizza.
