I LITERALLY received my MBPR less than 48 hours ago! *sigh* Just call me Leo Laporte.

The good thing is the only difference is .1 GHz on the processor… probably not worth sending back…

Exactly...

$1500+ for a laptop, any laptop, is still a high price these days...especially for a 13" display. Most folks can get a great laptop for under $1000 with or without lots of bells and whistles. The only people that spend over $1000 for a laptop are power users that need the RAM/CPU/Drive specs.

So? $50K is a high price for a fairly loaded 4 cylinder BMW 328i. You can get a similarly equipped Hyundai Azera for $15K less but that doesn't affect BMW sales one iota. Consumers that want BMW want BMW. Same goes for Apple. These are "aspirational" brands, not "penny pinching" ones. I doubt very few Apple customers switch to PC over price, they are already accustom to the price.

I like this news. The prices on either the 13" rMBP or the 13" MBA (which I'm deciding between) were both hard to justify for the processing power you get. They're both still pricey, but a little less painfully so after this update.

Still might wait for Haswell, though. It'd be nice to have a GPU that can drive the display at alternative resolutions without stuttering. Or handle the internal display plus an external, stuff like that.

can't say I care for your tone. who exactly are you to say "not really" to my perfectly valid opinion that the retina 13 is poor value for money?

I'm saying I don't share your opinion. I think it is a much better value now than it was before. It's $100 more than the comparable MacBook Air upgraded to 8GB, and it has a much nicer screen.

Better yet, a retina macbook air 15 inch. THAT would be incredible. Doubt it will ever happen though
They couldn't sell me one fast enough if a 15" retina air ever became a reality! :D

Don't expect to see it this year. According to Anandtech, the amount of power that requires to power a "Retina" screen is simply too much if Apple still want to maintain the current dimensions of the Air. Not to mention the battery life that would take a great hit by having a retina screen.

Maybe next year though. Unless Apple are willing to sacrifice thickness or battery life.
All valid points, hopefully Apple can figure this out. I've always loved the form factor of the MacBook Air, but now seeing the retina pros. A convergence of the 2 would be the sweet spot for me.

This doesn't bode well for the next gen non retina MBP. I've been holding out for an updated 2013 model. I like that I can change the innards around on my own anytime I want.

You are within your return period. In addition to the 0.1GHz base speed (which is actually 0.2GHz in Turbo Boost), you would also get the lower price. I'd see if you can get the price differential back if you don't want to go through the hassle of getting a new machine.

Apple just realised that the world has figured out that SSD's dont cost as much as apple claim!

250GB SSD now can cost less than 100GBP wholesale.

Call you Leo Laporte? Why are you a pompous jerk? Ha. J/K.

Seriously, send it back. It's not a huge bump, but when you go to sell the newer model will get you more $ just b/c it's a 2013 and not a 2012. It's like when you buy a car a month before the new model year and boom you instantly lose another 10% in value overnight (in addition to the 10% you lose the second you drive off the lot).

I'm guessing the 15" cMBP is gone, and the 13" cMBP is relegated to a special, non-updated education model in July (like they did with the white MacBook in 2011).

Agreed.

But I think that the reason the 13" isn't selling as well is that most people who are buying a 13" laptop aren't 'pro' users and are picking up the MBAir instead.

That's the real story. Apple had gotten away with charging north of $2/GB for SSDs for quite a while. Even at the current prices their margins are still pretty high. At the previous prices, they were probably making twice as much as the manufacturer.

I think so. Honestly how many Mac apps have been upgraded to fit Retina resolution? I don't see many.

Quite a few. All the Apple applications, and MS Office are some notable ones. There is a whole thread going. The real story is that Apple lowered the prices of their SSDs across the board. Hopefully we'll see Mac sales recover. This may also be why Apple projected revenue a bit more conservatively than the Street was looking for. Based on their old prices, they were getting north of $2 for every GB of Flash storage they sold.

Hmmm, my cMBPs will still work anyways. Apple and technology will always move on.

What I want to know is are we waiting for the Haswell, Broadwell or Hasbeen such as the 17''?
Retina screens are like playing to lottery, you get a good one or a bad one. Not really a good idea Apple! No wonder you have to reduce the price and now all the stock holders will be wondering if to sell stock once again!

yes, I gathered you don't share my opinion. however there are more polite ways to express that than saying "not really"!

the Air services a niche need very well - and is arguably best in class.

yes, the retina 13 has a nicer screen than the Air but when it comes to usable real estate this is not so clearcut. you're effectively working on a smaller area.

IMO you're paying more for a machine with less utility, hence it remains poor value.

nice

Nice news. Great to see Apple not only upgrading these but making the 13" options (rMBP and MBA) more affordable.

Two things I've picked up are:

You pay more for first gen and you get less options for the lower end first gen models.

So it pays literally to wait for future generations, not just for specs and possible problems to be sorted, but to save more too. If anything will teach me patience, this might. :D

I didn't see my response as impolite.

Anyway, the rMBP can emulate 1440x900 and 1650x1080 modes just fine, so you can get the same or more real estate on the 13" rMBP. I replaced a MacBook Air with an rMBP in December and am very happy with the move. I'd have been happier had I replaced it February 13th. :D
