There was a time when Apple went from the 27-inch iMac to the 27-inch 5K Retina iMac, at a moment when there were no 5K monitors on the market and Apple had to engineer a custom solution to achieve that resolution. And they did it without really increasing the iMac’s base price.

That was in 2014, and you could get an iMac with a 5K display for two thousand bucks. Today, we still have a display with practically the same specifications.

Yes, this is called “breakthrough innovation”

$1600 for a 60hz display in 2026 is hilarious. Especially when multiple 5k 120hz displays shown at CES are releasing this year
AGREED! It's so overpriced for what it offers. And the fact that Apple insists on charging you extra for a height-adjustable stand (something that's standard on almost every monitor out there) is absolutely ridiculous.

So, I am asking this noob question in all seriousness ....

Clearly, from the 180 comments, this monitor is not for MacRumors members.

So, honestly, who is the target customer for this monitor?

I am in the market for a new monitor and would like TB5, but geez, these comments are brutal.

Who did Apple target this monitor for?

Me!

I am all up for it. Because it is the combination of the things I'm looking for. Good speakers, nice camera, TB5, not too big, not too small, perfect pixel density, and so on.

Unfortunately, there aren't much options that comes with a similar package.

What a monumental disappointment. Not often I say it, but Apple dropped the ball on this one.
They've dropped the ball ever since Timmy took over. Let's see......

  • 64GB in 2026. Seriously?
  • $10,000 Apple Watch.
  • Siri
  • Dongles. So many dongles.
  • Butterfly keyboard roulette.
  • Bendgate.
  • No headphone jack.
  • Touch Bar.
  • $1,000+ iPhones.
  • The Camera Bump - the only real design change since iPhone 8.
  • Batterygate. They got caught red handed.
  • AirPower. Never happened.
  • Still Siri
  • $6,000 monitor.
  • $1,000 stand. Sold separately.
  • No charger in box. Thanks so much.
  • Subscriptions for everything. Final Cut and Work anyone?
  • Right-to-repair resistance.
  • Apple Watch design the same: 10 generations no real innovation.
  • Design stagnation: everywhere. Where's Jony?
  • Lack of Innovation. I miss Steve.
  • FineWoven. Just give me leather.
  • Did I mention Siri?
  • Vision Pro: $3,499 really?
  • Planned Obsolecense. Gee golly thanks!
  • Watch bands: PFAS. Cool.

Care to add any I missed?

Honest question
Why not get excellent speakers, top. Notch camera, better display that is large, i.e., 32+ inches for less money

That is pick and choose top notch components that will run you less money than good speakers good camera, smaller display for a premium price?

I feel the same. Why is it so over-engineered? Naked planned obsolescence?

My hunch is, nothing will happen in the next year. The updated model isn't even 6 months old. Vision is obviously a long play for them and I'm not convinced we'll see a truly next gen Vision Pro ever. It's clear that the public isn't interested in a full-blown "spatial computer", but I'm sure a lot of the tech is making its way into upcoming and potentially more consumer-friendly products like glasses.

I also really believe there's a market for a reasonably priced Vision display that connects to one's Macs, iPhones and iPads. It would be an instant buy for me. It's clear that most people who are buying Vision Pro are doing so for the big screen entertainment and remote display features. That's the product. That's the "killer app". The "spatial computing" stuff isn't resonating.

iPod first, second and third generation: 2 million sold.
iPod fourth generation: 42 million sold.

Apple Watch Series 0: 10 million sold
Apple Watch Series 3: 100 million sold

iPhone 1: 1 million units sold
iPhone 4: 40 million units sold
iPhones sold in 2025: 250 million units sold

Worth noting that people so often compress historical successes in their mind and completely dismiss in their memory how long it took to get there. People may not be ready for the Vision platform, but if Apple plays this like they did their other hits, they could see history repeat itself.

It doesn't replace the need for displays or TVs, but if I had to choose, I can see how a Vision Pro would serve as my work display when at my desk. If I'm going to spend $3000, it does give me pause to make that choice,

Holy bad news. What a complete and utter let down. A solid, hard pass. Am honestly gobsmacked at how bad the options are from Apple now. My current Studio Display is staying put for my work monitor. I also hooked up my PC's 28" 4K monitor (144hz) and it looks really good too. Apple literally has nothing reasonable to offer.

If Apple has a 4th iteration of Vision Pro out within three years of the original model and it does 20 million units i will buy you one myself.

If they couldn't stretch to 32", the studio xdr could have been a 5.5k 30" display (similar to the 4.5k imac) to better differentiate the more pro offering, especially for the $$$$ they cost

The same people who were interested in buying a $1600 ASD last week will buy a newly updated $1600 ASD at no extra cost this week.

Most purchases are not going to be based on rumor websites, like this.

Consumer Tech products rarely target the tech savvy.

Yeah, about that. Two very significant things happened between the first line and the second line:
1) By the fourth generation, the cost of an iPod was about half of a first gen.
2) Windows support was introduced.

I have a gen 1 Studio Display with the height stand I bought a few years ago used. No need to upgrade.

There's practically no need to update anything with Apple Silicon. My brother's family use an M1 iMac they've had since it came out and my sister uses a M1 MacBook Air.

I use either a Mac Studio M1 Ultra or Vision Pro M2. I might go for the M5 Ultra when it's out. I don't use laptops.

I had convinced myself to spend the 5K for the upper model of display when it was finally released. But not for 27”.

Those of us who are older need to sit further from the monitor - sitting closer to a 27” monitor is not the same as further from a 32” in terms of accommodation. I guess I’m spending 2G on the 6K 32” LG at this point.

So, I’m in the market for the new MBP M5Pro with one of these screens to replace my 2015 iMac 5K. I do photography and obviously have a calibrated printer for that purpose. Should I go for the cheaper one or expensive one? When you put the stand, the difference is £1000

🤣 What a joke. I’m good with my old Studio Display, which was already expensive enough. There is absolutely no reason for anyone who already owns a Studio Display to upgrade, and if you are a new customer, the same advice as before (which I obviously didn't heed 🤦‍♂️) is still valid: Look somewhere else, save money, and maybe invest it in your next iPhone or whatever.
Obviously, don’t buy the new XDR Studio Display. The price is still crazy, even though they throw in the stand for free this time. If you don't belong to the consumer group that bought the useless Vision Pro in the past, again, don’t buy any of these displays.
