crazy thing is that my M2 Ultra won't be able to handle two of these at a time doing 120hz 5k reso...it'll drop down to 60hz. Sucks, because i was considering getting 3 for my work setup to replace my two studio displays+asus ROG 120hz display so they'd be uniform, but apparently there's no way it will run 3 on an M2 Ultra with Thunderbolt 4 lol

The implication was they wanted 120Hz on the base ASD at the ASD price. Not a $3200 Pro Display XDR Lite.

Some may have wanted that, but it was always unrealistic at the price point. 5k at 120Hz requires incredible engineering innovation across both input and output devices. Fortunately, Apple already built the capabilities into its most recent and powerful devices. And now we have a revolutionary new monitor capable of driving a much richer and more immersive display experience.

My gosh, I can only imagine the prompt you had to type into the Gemisiri chat bot to come up with that paragraph of Apple marking nonsense.

Quite disappointed with the update. Asked Grok what the differences were and immediately looked at the old one on Amazon. Unfortunately height adjustable wasn’t in stock so I bought the tilt version at a 24% discount to stay within the ecosystem. Can live with that. An OLED screen and a better camera would have made me buy the new one.

If you want the old one: be fast. Many seem to think likewise.

I’ve seen countless posts from people screaming all they want is the display updated to 120Hz refresh rate. Now they have that option, the people screaming for it previously now seem strangely absent from the discussion.

I think people expected the existing Studio Display to receive an update/refresh, adding 120Hz, for roughly the same price.

Kind of like how Apple updates most of its products ~annually, bumps specs with an occasional redesign, and then keeps the price roughly the same.

But this Studio Display update is a spec-bump, after multiple years of no updates, with a whopping 2X price increase.

Imagine if the new MacBook Air they just announced added the M5 chip… along with doubling the price of all models? But then Apple said, “hey, you can still get the old M4 model for the same original price.”

I’m assuming the Studio Display XDR isn’t true 10-bit? That language is now gone on the page. So you want to tell me in 2026 for $600 less you get a worse screen than the Pro Display XDR?

If you're looking to buy a new display in the future but are not in a hurry, I suggest waiting for the MSI MPG 271KRAW16 display that MSI announced at CES this year. The specs of the panel are very similar to the new Apple XDR display:
- 5K, 27 inch
- miniLED with 2304 dimming zones, the exact same as the new XDR display
- 165 Hz refresh rate
- VESA DisplayHDR 1400 rating
- GLOSSY

This almost looks like the same panel, but the Apple Studio Display XDR seems to achieve way higher HDR brightness and the refresh rate in the MSI is slightly higher so I'm not sure. Apparently LG is making a cheaper display with this same/similar panel too, but matte and no dimming zones.
The rumored price is around $900 but this is completely unconfirmed. Bad news is that there is no actual release date (and that the case is pretty ugly and gamer-y compared to Apple).

Abysmal XDR update. At CES, LG and Samsung introduced 32” 6K displays, thought Apple would have used one of those panels in its update.
Maybe they are not high enough yield, reliablity or color issues.

The first LG 5k had plenty of documented issues despite it being the same panel as the ASD that came years later (and not much cheaper).

Those same people expected it at the same price.

The reviews will be out in a few weeks that find that the ASD provides XYZ better than the competition, but you have to pay a premium. I'm not at all surprised by the pricing.

If all you need is resolution, buy something else, if all you need is size, buy something else, if all you want is a monitor with a webcam, buy something else. If you want the complete package that Apple provides, buy an ASD.

What if you were in a hurry and needed one in the next month? What's the best existing model, or 3-5 such good candidate models?

Happy to move a discussion over to here if you can help.

WTF LOL
I had to do a double take thinking it had to be an error, it's still 60hz??
I was for sure going to upgrade from my Studio Display but this is the exact same display, oh well I'll save my money
I really don't understand the point of this release

Not sure if it is "worse" per se. Some of Apple's original marketing for the Pro Display XDR was that it was supposed to compete with broadcast-quality reference monitors and the "True 10-bit" claim was part of that marketing. Now it's become pretty widely known that the XDR is far from being a reference monitor, so Apple is instead focusing on the hobbiest prosumers that the monitor is actually suited for.

Ancillary issue, but for those keeping score at home—Gurman just said on Sunday that new displays weren’t coming this week 😅
Well if you want to be pedantic, I and most of us don't count slightly changing the speakers as a "new display". It's the same display for the same price.

And the higher end display is just a much worse Apple 6K display. So I'm actually with Gurman this time!
