Ahead of the 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off on Monday, June 3 with a keynote event, Apple has updated its official WWDC app for iOS devices.

There have been no design changes to the app aside from a new neon icon that better matches the darker theme of the 2019 conference, but according to Apple's release notes, the update adds a new profile area for managing notifications, virtual queuing for labs, and app icon selection. App icon selection means you can change the color of the Apple logo on the icon in the Settings section of the app.

You'll also see new WWDC-themed iMessage stickers in the Messages app following the update.

The new update introduces placeholder titles for upcoming sessions and labs, with official names hidden because many of these sessions are based on features that have not yet been announced.

For developers who are on-site and attending WWDC, the app offers up on-site tools like maps and start times for labs, sessions, and events. For those unable to attend, it will include live video streams of the keynote, labs, and sessions.

Apple is also offering a tvOS app for the fourth and fifth-generation Apple TV so developers can also watch WWDC sessions on their television sets.

The Worldwide Developers Conference starts on June 3 with a keynote that will take place at 10:00 a.m. Apple will live stream the keynote on both its website and on the Apple TV, and MacRumors will also provide live coverage on MacRumors.com and through the MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

Apple's WWDC app can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

I wonder if the neon stuff will translate over to iOS. It was in the WWDC invites too.

With dark mode incoming, neon outlines to apps could be cool

Ooh that would be cool. I hope at least it means if you’re using dark mode the app icon backgrounds change to black.

You would think after the recent Apple events people would stop getting their hopes up.

We already have them, developers just have to allow it for their app. I was able to set my MLB At Bat icon as the Yankees logo because that app allows it.

I sure hope so! This would be the closest thing we'd get to theming without a jailbreak.

This event is much different than their most recent one was, that one was already expected to be boring. New OS releases certainly aren't boring.

This. Been a feature since one of the iOS 10 updates.

    Yay. Dark Mode.

I sincerely hope they don't go with thin stroke icons for iOS. They should have already learned from the Helvetica Neue < SF Pro feedback.

What I find funny about the WWDC App is all the sessions with ridiculous names (since they want to keep them secret until after the keynote) and people trying to figure out the hidden meanings.

For example, "This session is kind of a dark horse."

It already exists on iOS. I have certain apps I can customise their icon.

    Not for built-in apps!

Yeah, but not just a plain neon image, but an icon made of animated neons that blink like real ones. That way, activating dark mode would be much cooler with icons lighting up unevenly during a second.

And the app whose developer doesn't update the icon for the dark mode? Well, that app would be truly dark, like shadowed, until the developer makes an actual neon version.

    I like it!

EDIT: nah, that's too complicated and too much to ask and if Apple doesn't involve somehow with a software to help with the conversion to the new icons, I don't see it coming.

A bit of personality in iOS would go a long way and make it a bit more fun for users. I used to own a Nexus 4 and it was fun to put some icon skins on just to change it up a little.

Possible simce 10.3 in crappy way for developer (moi); seemed to be a quick hack.

Perhaps fixed [and extended] in 13?

Exactly my thoughts. It would be a welcome change. The UI is getting really stale.

Changeable icons isn't a new feature. Try the Berkanan app.

Hopefully we actually get themes. Doing them one by one sounds tedious.

Interesting I didn't know some apps had this option. Cool!

Makes sense if they want to make sure app icons look good on either reg or dark mode

Would be cool if the dark mode/neon went right through the entire OS; Animoji’s, keys, apps... everything!! :)
