Vision Pro may be Apple’s worst product by resources spent relative to demand.
Lisa cost about $33,500 in today’s dollars and sold ~10,000 units; its development cost was roughly $500M today. Newton cost about $230M today to develop. The G4 Cube cost about $3,500 today and sold ~150,000.
Vision Pro took seven years, generated 5,000+ patents, and required an entirely new hardware/software platform. Yet Apple shipped only ~390,000 units in 2024, with demand falling sharply afterward.
Apple doesn’t disclose AVP-specific R&D, but no other major Apple flop combines this level of investment with so little sustained market demand.
