At one point I had X-Plane (version 8 or 9 as I recall) running on a curved screen triple-projector setup for 180º visuals, physical avionics stack, yoke, pedals, throttle quadrant, switches. While X-Plane was the most faithful simulator to fly, sometimes I would switch over to MSFS X for the prettier visuals, even though MSFS flying model felt... weird (I could do spins in X-Plane, but not MSFS, for example). At the same time I also had my own small airplane to fly, and my X-Plane setup was instrumental (pardon the pun) in really learning approaches and procedures on my own at home in between flight lessons and ground school classes. I even had X-Plane running on my iPad and an early version of Foreflight.
10+ years of private flying later, I've since sold my airplane and no longer have the sim setup. By the way, it's not the initial cost of the airplane, but the ongoing required inspections, maintenance, insurance, storage, surprises "this needs fixing and the part is unobtanium", plus the pilot's calendar of medicals, flight reviews, and you need to make time to get out and fly to keep your skills sharp... it has to be integrated into your personal lifestyle or a career, but it is incredible, and I always recommend scheduling an "intro flight" at the local airport to anyone interested. You can rent an airplane quite reasonably and typically just pay for the engine-on time. Just be aware it's a bug that you can never get un-bitten from!
This XP/AVP development might push me over the edge to pick up a Vision Pro. I'd love to get back into X-Plane. I figured if I ever did, it would be AR + physical controls. No more futzing around with projectors and the lack of contrast a curved screen creates.
