A British paraplegic adventurer was being filmed for an Apple Vision Pro immersive video series during a fatal aircraft crash in the Jordanian desert in July 2024, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

Claire Lomas became internationally recognized in 2012 when she became the first person to complete the London Marathon using a robotic exoskeleton suit, five years after being paralyzed from the waist down in a horse-riding accident. Apple was apparently working with London-based Atlantic Studios to film Lomas for its Apple Immersive Video series called Adventure. A camera system was mounted on the plane itself, and Lomas was actively being recorded when the crash occurred. Lomas died from her injuries within weeks of the crash at the age of 44.

The planned episode was set to showcase multiple Jordanian landmarks, including the Wadi Rum valley and the ancient city of Petra. The original release date for was sometime in 2025. Apple spent millions of dollars per episode on the series, with Atlantic producing and Apple distributing.

People involved with the production say there were broader safety concerns during the making of the Adventure series, including crews working longer hours than staff felt was safe, filming in harsh climates, and operating equipment in conditions the crew had limited training for. Staffers reportedly raised these concerns with their superiors at Apple, which in response sent a health and safety representative to work periodically alongside production staff. There is no record of other major injuries tied to the series.

Apple and Atlantic continued working together after the crash; a Colorado episode was filmed in August 2024. Apple has released five Adventure episodes to date, featuring athletes highlining 3,000 feet in the air, swimming under Arctic ice, parkouring across Paris, cliff diving in Spain, and racing cars in Colorado. No new episodes have been published since last year.

The Adventure series sits within Apple's broader Apple Immersive Video offering for the Vision Pro, which Apple describes as a "180-degree, 3D 8K recording format captured with Spatial Audio." The format is one of the headset's primary selling points and is used in in-store demonstrations of the $3,499 device.

The telling part is "they continued to film the series" after the accident. Hey, what's one person's life when we can make millions.
It was extreme sport, accidents happen. People have been severely injured or died doing the Red Bull extreme video events over the years, but they still make them.
One of the stunt men on XXX died hitting a bridge, they still released the film. (Just one example, there have many films over the years, where cast or crew were killed during filming and the film was still released.)

Whilst it is tragic, this is a bit of a non-story, especially as the accident happened nearly 2 years ago and the official inquiry into her death released its report over a year ago, reported by the BBC in March 2025. The Microlight veered off the road after landing and hit a rock.

A friend, Matt Hampson (Leicster Tigers' player), whose charity funded her exoskeleton suit, said:

"She didn't let anyone stop her and she always wanted to push the boundaries and show people you could live a great and fulfilled life.

"She was a great ambassador and she liked to do things her own way.

"I was really shocked when I heard she had died."

So it sounds like she died doing what she loved to do, pushing boundaries.

That was in 2024, after the accident. Given it was widely reported at the time, you have to question, why Gurman waited until now to report it himself...

I'm not sure why Gurman felt the need to report this.

Is this not a worthwhile reason? It seems that safety concerns are endemic to the whole series. It's still Apple's responsibility as the producer to make sure that everyone is working in as safe a manner as possible.

I didn’t know about this. Very sad.

I guess it was a third party production company making it for Apple - and not directly Apple itself.

But still. Hopefully Apple will learn from this.

And another good question is, why is MR re-posting it or felt the need?

This was in late 2024, coroners report mentions it was an accident (which happens). Gurman is making it sound like there was some diabolical plan on Apple’s part to cause Lomas’ death.

Poor taste in reporting by Gurman and reposting by MR imho.

What an interesting take....So can an entire series because of an unfortunate fatality during one episode? Threaten the livelihood of maybe how many people, the artistic visionaries with a passion to see this project to fruition? The dedicated production crew, the post production team? Silence all the other potential distinguished achievers with stories of their own to tell in other episodes? Trash all that captured content to date that took remarkable effort by how many others?...Probably should've just canceled the remaining moon program after the Apollo 1 disaster.
