This is going to suck for a lot of us content creators who rely on typing. I genuinely wanted to buy one to replace my MacBook and iMac, but won't since the keyboard sucks.

Why the hell can't the glasses project a keyboard on a flat surface for typing? It costs $3.5K and runs a rubbish version of iPadOS without a proper keyboard. I thought Apple would create some seamless magic for typing, but I was mistaken.
This hasn’t even been released yet and it is a 1.0 product. It’s going to change radically over the next several months and years. Inputs , like the keyboard, are an area where i would expect a lot of different ideas to be tried out and for it to evolve rapidly. i wouldn’t get discouraged this early in the game.

It should just link to an iPhone (maybe iPad) to use as the physical interface device.

The iPhone screen could display whatever interface is needed and of course would also provide haptic feedback which is needed.

So to type you’d look at your phone’s screen through cameras on the headset with screens in the headset.

Seems like a weird solution that’s bound not to work as expected. What exactly does a real monitor or phone screen look like mitigated by the AVP system?

Oh man, I can't wait to spent more money on a bluetooth keyboard to be able to use my $3500 monitor that no one else can see for basic tasks like typing. It's all so lightweight and mobile. Pretty soon, we won't need to type we'll just be flinging windows all over the place and evolving into crab people. This is the future.

Apple couldn't even get the iPad to be a productive tool without an external keyboard and a pencil, why did anyone at Apple think that the future of computers is just moving windows around in a virtual space with pinching gestures?
Well Apple is known to be pretty dense about things. Not the smartest bunch of people out there for sure. Less said about Apple fans, who feed them, the better.

Apple Lisa, hockey puck mouse, G4 cube, HP iPod, the iPod phone (Motorola ROKR), iPod hi-fi, mobile me, iAds, first generation Apple TV, iTunes Ping.
I bet Steve would’ve never allowed any of those either…
Imaginary Steve Jobs certainly would not have allowed those. Except for mobile me. I love having a me.com email address.

I don’t see this as a drawback, but definitely room for improvement. This could be one of those things where they need the product in actual real-world use with a sizable user base to fine tune additional functionality. Most people who are going to buy this likely have a Bluetooth keyboard.

Not saying it shouldn’t be addressed, it just doesn’t seem like a missing feature or oversight at this point. I’m actually kind of surprised the thing is launching with a virtual keyboard at all, even one that’s handicapped.
It absolutely HAS to have a keyboard, and so it will have a virtual keyboard.

If it didn't have a virtual keyboard, then a good many of the million apps it supports out of the box will be crippled with no way to enter text unless you attach a physical keyboard.

Steve Jobs would NEVER have allowed this to go to market...
Oh, he would have, he would have led the band, driving the float, he so would have... he let crud like Final Cut Pro X to market, along with the iphone... Steve was no angel, he sold clangers as well as tim has.. Steve would have sold toilet paper with the apple logo for $39 a roll if offered... No question Steve was about selling..

Give it time, people, the thing has not even been released yet!
But this is just it. Expectations are sky-high. It doesn't make much sense to release something that is worse than the competition. I really hope this thing doesn't bomb.

It's so obvious that it doesn't provide physical haptic feedback.

Without a doubt, this is the form of the future, what else could it be?

In the future, these devices will become smaller, more portable, and with increasing functionality. Technology needs to iterate gradually.

I think some people in here need to here themselves talk. Some in here are complaining (rightly) about the keyboard and others are defending Apple by saying it is a rev/gen 1.0 product therefore expect some issues. Are those people really saying that for a product that is going to cost $3500??, to put up with a no functioning virtual keyboard!!!. For the price it is being sold at I would be expecting everything to work close to flawlessly. If Apple is unable to get a virtually keyboard working properly then they should reduce the price of the VP because in my opinion it is completely arrogant of anyone to say 'get a bluetooth keyboard'. No, make sure the virtual keyboard works first and if Apple cannot then offer buyers a free bluetooth keyboard upon purchase of the VP or reduce the price of the VP.

… it could be worse, imagine they released the iphone without copy/paste function.
The iphone was, is, and will forever remain a product found on the same shelf as Fisher Price my first laptop, it was/is/forever will be a toy... Using dongles is juvenile and pediatric.. it shows a complete lack of any sort of engineering maturity..Apple products show this.. from the apps to and through hardware, look at how Apple pay failed..

Apparently less than 20% of people can touch type so it sounds like the virtual keyboard will be fine for most people, and those who can touch type are going to want to do this with a physical keyboard anyway, so 🤷🏻‍♂️

I write blogs and fiction for fun.

I can't type for toffee 🤷‍♂️ 🤣

Well, perhaps that explains the success of UK government IT projects.

This is going to be HILARIOUS to see being used in situations where people are wearing an Apple Vision Pro on a plane! They either a) Will be poking in the air b) Shouting out what movie or whatever they are typing (SO private) or c) Busting out the good old “travel” Bluetooth keyboard just because they rather have a “big screen”. Imagine having to have to sit next to the person with one of these on. Hopefully they don’t have an aisle seat!

As someone who draws on a pen monitor (Cintiq), I’m very interested to find this out. If it doesn’t look absolutely right, it will probably be a deal breaker for me on the VP.

This is why it’s “voice-first” for text entry. It has been since the reveal. Look at a text field and start speaking what you want to type.

The virtual keyboard was always a backup.

Physical keyboards will be for a certain “high productivity” workflow but not necessary for most users.
Great point, actually - with voice recognition getting better and better all the time.

I love you. Great question, why do I need this instead of a computer monitor? It's not like I am taking the VisionPro on the go anyways....
