Ok, next lawsuit. Apple is using its monopoly with the iOS Operating System and isn't allowing other web browsers to become the default web browser used by the OS for things like links in e-mails, etc.

So, just like Microsoft did with Internet Explorer and had to offer ways of letting consumers pick the default browser, so must Apple.

I prefer Chrome or even Maxthon. Allow me to make those the default!

monopoly? you must have not seen this:

Android ~70%
IOS ~17%

you think it will change overnight? btw, this is worldwide. in the usa, android is a little over 50% and ios around 30%.

I remember seeing the samsung play at best buy beside I pod Touches, and not being able to tell the difference from a distance in the packaging. It was just too blatant for any reasonable person to ignore, unless you were some samsung fan or something.

I can't believe that european Judge ruled against them.

Socialism for the win. Their lucky they didn't just vote to take all their tech and give it to the government. I was relieved tbh. :p

I smell a new wave of variety, choice, and innovation in the market!

(Kudos to Microsoft for doing something truly new without trying to be a clone first.)

Ummm...so what are the possible consequences.

Maybe samsung will have to do some real research, come up with there own ideas....or pay for patents.

The Point

This isn't Apple V Android, this is a stand against a pretty obvious copy of ui and look and feel. Ponder this, how many times do you think the words "it's just like an iPhone" have been muttered in awful phone stores? Android in its basic form is a worthy adversary to iOS, and on some rooted Samsung handsets i've actually been amazed and been forced to eat my words. But, y,no, if you don't like the iPhone, go out into the world and support something better. Here's an idea put all your collective buying power together and start up a company that writes your own UI for Android. Do something new. Amaze us all.

You are clearly suffering from menopause.

?

You have been smoking way too much @ menopause's party.

Awww someone's peed their pants :p Talk to the hand! Oh wait. There's a BILLION DOLLARS in it. Sorry. Move away!

:D :D

Personally, I think the decision is bad for everyone. I like apple products as much as the next guy, but I absolutely hate when companies take ******** patents and use them as weapons against competitors.....esp competitors that are outselling them. (Samsung sells more phones that Apple).

I think Samsung makes damn good products; I have Samsung TV's, and a few other things (including a Galaxy S3 phone...Yes, it's awesome :D).

I think it will be overturned on appeal, or at least reduced. There's enough questionable stuff involved with this trail to warrant any concerns to be looked at.

Federal court house 10 miles from Apple HQ, jurors picked from a population that views SJ as the second coming of Christ, and 22 hours of deliberations on 700 questions (or...about 2 minutes a question).

Yeah, I can see how an appeals court won't think the jury might have been stacked.

You do know where the appeals court is located right ?

Possible consequences? THERE WILL BE CONSEQUNECES.

They have awoken the sleeping dragon: Google.

Android phones is still outpacing iPhones. It's just that now many companies will be suing the pants off Apple...in their courts.

Wow, seriously they've woken up the sleeping dragon: Google. It's certainly the most valuable company to trade publicly, market cap > $600B, Google has more $100B in cash, Google takes in almost 50% of the smartphone market profits, Google has created the most profitable product ever.....

Uh no.... wait a minute, that's actually Apple. The truth is Apple is the dragon that is breathing fire. I still can't understand how google is the "sleeping dragon" that can destroy Apple.

This is the era of Apple, if there's really a dragon, then it's Apple!

Probable consequence... Hey Google... You owe Apple... da-da-dummmmm... One Billion Dollars!

I wonder if there is an opportunity for Both sides to get something good out of this?

Like, Apple waives some of the $1.05 Billion in damages for a $600M credit against current and future invoices or something along those lines.

Weird that these two companies are still in bed together despite all this.

Apple has already won the larger prize -- designs will start changing all around the world effective right NOW. The cash damages, in my opinion, are icing, and Apple could find a way to still hammer home the win, but also use it as a way to mend the fence some at the same time?

I dunno... just thinking out loud.

Of course I do. Location doesn't matter for the appellate court - only judges sit on the appeals court....no juries.

Judge Koh made references to each side that they had "made their record [for appeal]" after quite a few of her decisions.

In other words, we the consumer, loses. Gee, thanks Apple.

You realize apple hasn't sued google because....they'll get ripped to shreds in court.

You realize that Apple hasn't sued Google because....Google doesn't sell Android, so they have no phone sells to receive money from.

In other words, we the consumer, loses. Gee, thanks Apple.

What?? I'm not sure what part of my comment had anything to do with the consumer? Unless you're talking about the ripped off designs that will now change.

You'll get no sympathy from me on that. I make my living via intellectual property. If it was okay for others to come along and steal my livelihood, I wouldn't have one. Apple had a right to file patents, and they had a right to protect and enforce them.

My comments were far more about the ongoing business relationship between Apple and Samsung.

There is nothing to be had by suing Google. Seriously what will Apple gain?
Samsung just got their bell rung to the tune of $1+Billion. Google and everyone else in the business should consider this a warning shot. Companies need to start innovating or they will get their bells rung too.

Justice was served. Samsung blatantly stole from Apple, the only reason they're relevant in this market is due to copying Apple, obsessing over how to BE Apple, and using Apple's hard work and money to do the same thing, yet "slightly tweak it" and add a few bits.

This is great for innovation, as it'll force others to come up with their own creations, not to provide people with a million different versions of Apple's.

Samesung have been exposed as shady crooks (again, always happens to them, it seems).

Well deserved victory, and Google is next. Android is the biggest theft to Apple of all time. It wouldn't exist if it weren't for Apple. Eric Shmidt started this whole thing when he quit Apple's board and then all of a sudden.... Android surfaces months later.

Glad to see the American justice system still punishes thievery with a vengeance.

How do you get an appeal bond on a $1 BILLION judgment??

Generally speaking, the party appealing must put up the entire value of the judgment, PLUS INTEREST to cover the time the matter is on appeal.

In other words, we the consumer, loses. Gee, thanks Apple.

"Consumers" are proving to be selfish enough to allow thievery to get them their desires of having Apple products made by numerous different companies, so they can claim to "hate Apple" and buy the ripoff of Apple (how ironic).

It isn't Apple's problem that consumers can't choose between a hundred Apple wannabe's. They did their thing, if you want it, buy it, if not, then the companies you buy from will have to create their own styles.
